Interesting MLB offensive stats this year. The league-wide batting average is .241, which is the 4th worst league-wide batting average in the history of organized baseball since 1871. Leaguewide OPS, on the other hand, is .722, which is slightly above the historical average of .706. This is, in all likelihood, because of the fourth-highest HR average in history, which is 1.21 per game.
The Giants have the third highest team OPS at .766 with the second most HRs, with 158, one more than Toronto. Their batting average is .245., above MLB average and #9 in MLB. With the addition of Kris Bryant, most of their starters' OPS is .875 or higher:
Bryant / 1.250
Ruf / .974
Posey / .963
Crawford / .911
Wade / .908
Estrada / .908
Longoria / .892
Belt / .875
They have three other core players with high OPS averages; Duggar / .825, Yastrzemski / .796, Flores / .771.
Casali, Solano, Slater and Dickerson are just under league average at .703, .702, .695 and .687 respectively.
Most of the poor hitters are hurt, gone, or in the minors (Bart, La Stella, Tromp, Dubon, Vosler, Tauchman, Davis).

Wonder what the stats will do in the second half of the year as the crackdown on "sticky stuff" was implemented. Spin rates are down, so it should translate to fewer strikeouts and better hitting.

Perhaps the tried and true method of pitching to spots and working the corners. Successful practitioners were Maddox, Glavine, Ford, Lopat, mature Spahn, Shantz etc. Called shake offs, waste pitches. Out think stupid hitters.

Starting pitching leaking a bit. Keep your eye on that. They don’t have options beyond the 5 starters. And innings are piling up as compared to 2020. It’s the one area they lack depth.

We would go to the Blue Fox when we were playing in the MCRD (Marine) tournament in San Diego. There would be a couple of reckless Santa Clara Broncos, most of the SJS team and guys from UOP. We left for the last time when under threat of about five guys with big knives we were told to pay a $5 "School tax." In a bar, restaurant, brothel. I don't think it got to the kiddies.

Back to lex’s point - I guess we are going to find out about the starting pitching depth now that DeSclafani is on the IL. Time for Sanchez to step up his game….
Watching Sanchez pitch is like watching paint dry. He’s so slow. Not expecting much. Bullpen game. Hopefully this is only a rest for DeSclafani. If so, I think they may do the same for Gausman and Wood at some point. Find a time when it only means they miss one start and give them a bit of rest. Innings piling up after last year, it makes it tougher. Dodgers have about 8 guys that can start. Hamels was a decent flyer to take. Wish the giants did it.

Giants are now four games ahead of all other teams with a 69-40 record. Houston, Dodgers, Tampa Bay and Milwaukee are all 65-44, 4.0 games behind the Giants. Giants on a 103 win pace.
Giants have most HRs, 3rd best OPS, 7th most runs scored in MLB. They have the best WHIP and 3rd best ERA in MLB.
Oddball NL West statistic: Giants are 31-20 against teams with >.500 record. Padres are 31-24 against teams with a winning record. Dodgers are 24-29 against teams with a winning record.
Be interesting to see what happens when La Stella, Belt and Longoria return.

The concern is that the starting pitching is leaking oil. Bully great today, as noted. Maybe the Giants "ham and egg" for the rest of the season, but it still seems likely the Dodgers (at least) overtake them.
