if i were Andy Reid, i would let Henne finish the game, and if they lose, then they lose.
imo it's not worth it to risk the career of a rare talent.

aaaand the guy who fell on Mahomes' ankle gets flagged for roughing the passer against Henne.

Mahommes was pissed about being taken to the locker room and Henne led a 98 yard touchdown drive (helped by that roughing the passer penalty), but Mahomes came back in for the second half, even though he was visibly limping, and led the chiefs to a TD, and the win.

Looked pretty bad, but I hope it wasn’t.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - OutsiderFan - 01-22-2023

Mahomes is a danger to himself and his team if not responsibly managed. I thought it insane for Reid to allow him back in the game. The Chiefs seemed to celebrate x-rays were negative, but confirmed he has a high ankle sprain, so not exactly a good thing. Trent Williams tried to play with a high ankle sprain in last year's NFC CG after suffering it the week before and said he regretted doing so, adding it took a month for it to heal after that game.

Mahomes will not be able to walk today and though staying off it for 7 days will allow swelling to subside, the ankle will not be healed and as soon as he starts running around, he will be limping again, unable to protect himself, unable to throw the ball as accurately as he must to win in the next two rounds. Sure, they can tape the ankle and shoot it up with whoever knows what pain killer, but he's going to be limited and more susceptible to worsening the current injury or sustaining another one. So what do the Chiefs want? Mahomes to be limited and get more damaged in the AFC CG, so he has no chance of playing in the Super Bowl? Or, do they want to let him rest for three weeks so if they make the Super Bowl, with their backup QB, he can play in it and be a lot more capable than he will be in an AFC CG?

The Chiefs are on the horns of quite a dilemma, and they will only make it worse by allowing Mahomes to have any say in whether he plays in the AFC CG. It should be 100% up to the doctors and medical people. Mahomes can't be trusted to make the best decision for himself or his team. He thinks he's Superman; thought he should continue playing on one leg and thinks he'll be OK to go in a week - crazy. It appears Mahomes overruled Chiefs medical personnel against the Jags. I mean what doctor would have seen him hobbling out there and not pulled him off the field if it was really their decision? As it was, the Chiefs were lucky the Jags were too inept to take advantage of getting to play them with such a compromised Mahomes. They won't be that lucky against Cincy or Buffalo.

And you know this how? I don't even play a doctor on TV, but I do know that long distance, TV based diagnoses can be difficult to get right. . . .

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - cardcrimson - 01-22-2023

The Giants were absolutely horrid last night. Overmatched and underprepared. Thought they showed no heart. After the field goal to make it 31-7, it looked like they gave up, the defense especially. The offense wasn't great, either; with the game still sort of in reach, Jones, on a 2nd and 1, dropped back to pass, was chased out of the pocket and ran out of bounds for a 5 yard loss. Boneheaded play. Of course they didn't make it on third down and punted on fourth.

As they have so many unrestricted free agents, looks like their success this year will be short lived. . . .

The Eagles had an extra week of rest, and really, it was more like three weeks' worth of rest since they sat their starters in their last game which was against...the Giants, whom they beat 22-16 with their backups. When it mattered on Dec. 11, the Eagles beat the Giants 48-22 on the Giants' home field. But still...the Giants did not look good last night.

Congratulations on your last win of the season! Purdy will show his youth against the big Philly defense. This won’t a “home” road game with lots of Faithful traveling and making a crowd difference.

GO EAGLES!

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - OutsiderFan - 01-22-2023

Got to give it up for that Niners DEFENSE!

I was doubting them this week, and especially concerned about Red Zone efficiency, but they held Dallas - who started the playoffs. 5-5 in the Red Zone - to 1 for 3. Niners made it tougher on themselves by going 1 for 3 too, but really, they just needed that push to win. That was the difference in the game. If Dallas had gone 3 for 3 they would have won, and they might have won going 2 for 3. Looking back on it, the biggest play of the game was the Jimmy Ward/Fred Warner pick in Red Zone before half that took points from Dallas and ultimately gave them to Niners.

It seems the Niners were able to take advantage of a Dallas team playing its 3rd straight road game in the second half. They didn't exactly dominate the second half, but they certainly gained control of the game in the second half, as the best teams tend to do.

On a related note, props to the odds makers. Most people thought the 46 O/U was nuts with two explosive offenses going at it. I really want to understand how they - and apparently Kyle Shanahan based on his comments - felt it would be a low scoring affair.

Well, I took the over, so don’t ask me…..

Last three drives (the first being the 91 yard 10 play TD drive) the Niners got 13 first downs.  They wore down the Cowboys.  Those two extra days of rest certainly didn’t hurt. I am not (ever) going to feel “bad” for the Cowboys, but the NFL needs to rethink the Monday night wildcard Weekend game.  My guess is we will hear a lot about that this week.

Hope McCaffrey is good to go Sunday.  Calf was acting up.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - JJJ - 01-22-2023

Schultz didn’t have a particularly good end of the game. He was going backwards when going out of bounds (rather than moving forward, per the announcers) so the clock kept going the first time, and on the second one, he didn’t get his second foot down inbounds when he could have, resulting in an incomplete pass. I was hoping for all our alumni to have great games, regardless of the outcome. Oh well.

Did your team really give up 40 to the Cowboys?

That's fair. Purdy has a half year of pro experience. Hurts has seven. Big difference indeed.

Still, I like the Niners' chances, especially after playing a tough D this week. The Giants' defense is certainly not the Niners' D.

Playoff records of the starting QBs in the 2022 season NFC CG

Brock Purdy: 2-0
Jalen Hurts: 1-1

Some preliminary thoughts on this Niners-Eagles matchup:

QB - Even (despite Hurts clearly being a superior physical athlete and Purdy a rookie)
RB - Even
WR - Eagles
TE - Niners
OL - Eagles
DL - Even
LB - Niners (this is the largest edge of any position group, IMO)
CB - Eagles
S - Niners

Even the positions I'd argue there is an edge, it's not like the other side is chopped liver. Nobody has a real advantage, IMO. That means it comes down to coaching (which includes execution), turnovers, and the vagaries of penalties.

Hurts has only been with the Eagles for 3 years.  But I suppose his time at Alabama & Oklahoma could be counted as pro experience.

Regarding Mahommes and the ankle:

From SI:
"Additionally, the Chiefs coach noted that this ankle injury isn’t nearly as bad as the one Mahomes suffered in 2019. The quarterback didn’t miss any games after sustaining the injury that season, which could mean it’s promising for him to play on Sunday."

Regarding 2019 from ABC: "Mahomes injured his ankle in Week 1 of the 2019 season, also against the Jaguars, and didn't miss any time, throwing seven touchdowns and averaging 409 passing yards while leading the Chiefs to victories the next two games, according to ESPN Stats & Information research."

While it's too soon to tell, Mahomes has been down this road before (and just for the record, I'm neither Chris Robinson nor Peter Bergman).

Yeah, but Mahomes is old now... ;)

In two games, Philadelphia has given up 57 points to the Cowboys, averaging 28.5 points scored against their defense. The Cowboys scored 12 against the 49ers. Of course, the Eagles scored 60 against the Cowboys in those two games.

Opening line is Eagles favored by 2. Should get interesting.

Niners have the edge in all 3 phases + coaching. SF finds a way to win a close one on the road this week --  and will be favored next month.

Another way to look at it…

#1 NDSU, FCS
#2 Eastern Illinois, FCS
#3 Iowa State, FBS

Obviously, #3 has the collegiate pedigree. Therefore, he should be the starter.  Insert sarcasm emoji here…
