I caught bits and pieces of Stanford ending Cal's baseball season, 11-4. Jimmy Nati had a great game at the plate and made a nice shoestring catch in the outfield.

So one down and four to go! Next up is 5-seed Miami, which I'm guessing is a lock for the NCAA tournament given the Hurricanes 36-17 (16-14) record and 31 RPI.

We're underway in Charlotte, NC. Stanford is starting freshman Andrew Shaw, 3.45 ERA. Shaw has appeared in 23 games, started 5 befoer today. Prior to today, Shaw has pitched a total of 28 2/3 innings. He retired the side in order on 11 pitches in the bottom of the first inning, so we'll see how far he goes.

It's 1-0 Stanford in the top of the second as JJ Moran slugs an RBI double to score Charlie Bates.
Miami ties it up on a solo HR in the bottom of the second. Pitching change with one out and a runner on first. Now pitching for Stanford is Carlos Gomez, 5.97 ERA.

I just noticed that the stadium is almost empty. The tournament is being played at Truist Field, home of the Charlotte Knights, Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. It's truly a neutral site for this game.
Unfortunately, ugly ball returned for Stanford. Two walks, a bloop single and an error resulted in 2 more runs for Miami. Now 3-1 Hurricanes in the top of the third.

I hope I'm wrong, but it feels like this is one of those games where Stanford will need to score in double figures to win.

427-ft HR to center by Teddy Tokheim on a pitch that might have been a low ball brings Stanford within 1! Now 3-2 Miami, with the Hurricanes coming up to bat in the bottom of the thrid.

Gomez still pitching for Stanford, but he doesn't seem to be fooling Miami hitters. Runner on first with no outs.
1-out double off the center field wall and the Gomez's day is done. Runners on 2nd and 3rd. Kassius Thomas, transfer from Duke, 5.04 ERA, coming in to pitch.
Kassius Thomas gets out of the jam in three pitches! The runner on third broke for home on a sharply hit ground ball to 3B JJ Moran, who easily throws the runner out at home. Next pitch is a ground ball to 2B Jeon.

Still 3-2 Miami top of the 4th.
More ugly ball in the bottom of 4th. E-4 on a routine grounder, walk, sacrifice bunt, single up the middle scores two runs to make it 5-2 Miami.

Groundout followed by a walk and Miami has runners on first and second, 2 outs. Stanford bringing in closer Trevor Moore, 3.61 ERA, to stop the bleeding. Critical moment coming up.

Moore gets a fly out to left field to end the threat. Stanford down 5-2 in the top of the fifth.

Stanford bats need to get hot now. Miami's ace (9-3, 3.21 ERA) has thrown just 51 pitches in four innings.
Stanford had runners on first and second with two outs, but Teddy Tokheim struck out swinging. Miami's pitcher actually struck out the side that inning and Stanford is now 0-4 with runners in scoring position.

5-2 Miami, bottom of the fifth, and I have to leave for a lunch meeting. Which is probably just as well for whoever might still be reading my posts...

I was hoping Sasaki would get more chances to up his stock. I’m truly hoping he realistically considers coming back another year if some MLB team doesn’t consider his marketability and take him higher than his numbers might warrant. I really don’t want him to go to the SoftBank Hawks, given all the hard work he went through to pave his unprecedented path.

Over the past three seasons, Stanford is 77-84 overall, which comes out to a 47.8 win %. By percent, this three-year stretch from 2024-2026 is the worst since 1942-43, 1946 (no baseball in 1944-45), when Harry Wolter was head coach. The three-year stretch of no NCAA tournament appearances is the worst since 1978-80--the early years of Mark Marquess--when only 34 teams made the tournament.

Transfers that I know of who were on Stanford's roster this year:
Kassius Thomas (P), Duke, 5.12 ERA, 1-3 W/L, 28 appearances, 1 save, 31 2/3 innings
Sam Garewal (P), Northwestern, 8.90 ERA, 1-3 W/L, 19 appearances, 31 1/3 innings
Henry McDonald (Catcher), Cal Poly SLO, .750 BA, 2.583 OPS, 6 games (no starts)
Braden Guentz (P), Pepperdine, no stats this year

As a long long time season tix holder it’s time for a change
If Esquer stays needs new coaches. We have two very good recruiting classes 2026 and 2027
I would hate to lose them and they signed / committed to Esquer

As a friend pointed out today fear the portal. There is both money and team success elsewhere

The portal opens June 1.

Tokheim was the only Stanford player on the 1st, 2nd or 3rd teams all conference. He was 2nd team All ACC.

Agree. IMHO, Sasaki has been treated very badly by the coaches. Is he 1b, dh, or riding the bench? Batting #1, 2, …, 6?

Honestly, if I was in his shoes, I’d be looking.

See my comment above. For Sasaki to not even get a mention is criminal. And the crimes were not committed by the ACC.

Donahoe punted on WBB. Is he going to punt on baseball too? I do think some change is needed, if nothing else pitching coach coach and some form of NIL/baseball investment. 

Baseball needs a new jolt of engery.

Donahoe punted on WBB. Is he going to punt on baseball too? I do think some change is needed, if nothing else pitching coach coach and some form of NIL/baseball investment. 

Baseball needs a new jolt of engery.

I’m curious about the NIL comment.  Are you suggesting you need to find someone who prioritizes fundraising so that we have the NIL funds or sponsors for players?  NIL money has to come from somewhere.
