She recruited Kiki Rice and Gabriella Jaquez (co-MVPs in the McDonald”s High School All-American game) as the core foundation of that culture - team first, really hard working, mature, strong values, etc. They played a significant role in recruiting the rest of the team.
from what i read, close did a great job. that said, it helps to have 4 of your starters peaking as seniors and good enough to be drafted in the wnba top 10, 2 more in the top 20. rice is starting as a rookie in the wnba and averaging 11 pts per game. jaquez starts as a rookie and averages 12 points. leger-walker starts and averages 8 points. kneepkens, dugalić, and, of course betts, are also getting minutes.
first time any team has sent 6 players to active wnba rosters in the same year.

I'll also add that having four of your starters peaking as seniors and good enough to be drafted in the WNBA top 10, two more in the top 20, and all those other things you mention means Cori Close is doing a great job. She didn't walk into any of that; she created it herself.
