Saw ESPN reporter Sal Paolantonio Friday night saying the Eagles are trying to protect Jalen Hurts' shoulder by having him turn away from contact to his right shoulder and sliding on his left side. This suggests Hurts was lucky to escape the Giants game without having an injury setback and the Eagles are afraid he will be hampered if his shoulder takes a big enough hit.
One thing that concerns me about the Shanahan offense is it doesn't build in hot receivers to all play designs and the receivers aren't seemingly taught to break off their routes when they see blitz. This was something quite evident against Kansas City this year. I just saw it demonstrated by Kurt Warner in last week's game too. Two different QBs, same problem with no hot routes to help the QB facing quick pressure. This is on Shanahan to fix.
Kurt Warner also pointed out how Purdy needs to do a better job counting defenders pre-snap, and eliminating one side of the field when the defense has the receivers outnumbered, particularly in the Red Zone when you don't have time to go through full field reads facing pressure. One thing that makes Hurts and the Eagles so effective is their offense is based on counting defenders, to a side of the field and in the box, and reacting to what defenders do. Makes playing QB easy. I hope Purdy learned this lesson about being more decisive to one side of the field from the Dallas game, but the odds are he didn't and the Red Zone struggled will continue.
Anyway, if the Niners focus on taking away the inside run to Sanders and Gainwell, knowing Hurts doesn't want to get hit as a ball carrier much, they can really bottle up the run, and turn Hurts into a pocket passer who has to decipher the Niners' very good zone defensive schemes to make plays, while facing pressure in the pocket. I don't think he can do this very well. He's just not able to look off defenders to create bigger throwing windows because that's not a skill the Eagles offense relies on. You don't need that with the RPOs and deep passing they do.

PLEASE keep this thread AT LEAST all about NFL, if not Niners specifically....
Umm, it was related specifically to the Niners. Trevor Bauer domestic abuser (accused, suspended, but not charged). Charles Omenihu domestic abuser (accused, arrested, but not charged or suspended, yet).
Trevor Bauer will not play for the Dodgers, his employer of record when the accusations came to light, ever again, and has yet to find someone to pay for his services. Charle Omenihu apparently will play for the Niners on Sunday. Certainly makes some ponder about the differing approaches, but apparently not everyone sees a comparison.
Bauer was suspended by MLB, not the Dodgers. Here's the NFL's policy:
https://nflcommunications.com/Documents/2018%20Policies/2018%20Personal%20Conduct%20Policy.pdf
Quote:Players convicted of a crime or subject to a disposition of a criminal proceeding (as defined in this Policy) are subject to discipline. But even if the conduct does not result in a criminal conviction, players found to have engaged in any of the following conduct will be subject to discipline. Prohibited conduct includes but is not limited to the following:
* Actual or threatened physical violence against another person, including dating violence, domestic violence, child abuse, and other forms of family violence;
...
Sounds like Omenihu's behavior would qualify.
BC
“players found to have engaged in any of the following conduct will be subject to discipline.”
Omehihu hasn’t been “found” to have engaged in anything. There are allegations. Have any of us read the police report? Are any of us in the DAs office? What about the statements of the people involved. Anybody read those?
This is not a situation, such as occurred years ago with Aldon Smith, who was a repeat offender As far as I know, Omehihu has not been accused before of such acts.
My response has nothing to do with the fact that he’s a 49er. It has to do with the fact that we have become so quick to immediately judge without knowing any of the facts other than what is splashed on the news. And those often turn out to be wrong.
I don’t think there’s anybody on this board who knows what happened or what the situation is. So perhaps we should wait to pass judgment on Omenihu and upon the 49ers response.

LOL! “Experts” critiquing a guy who has played in a total of eight games in his career as though he were a seasoned vet. Obviously, there are things he could do better. IMO, Purdy’s overall play has been nothing short of miraculous. He has already set a number of records, my favorite being the longest streak of pass attempts by a rookie in the playoffs without an INT. Heck, he is on the verge of being the first rookie to ever lead his team to victory in a conference championship game in the Super Bowl era.
Picking at things he could do better tells me more about the observer than the “observee”. Warner is an idiot.
Of course, Purdy’s coach has had much to do with his success. Shanahan’s game plans are ideal for Purdy’s style of play. I haven’t seen anything that Shanahan needs to “fix”.
Having said that, the Eagles have the better team and should win a close one. However, SF could certainly pull the upset. I hope we see one tomorrow.

Come on. QB play is easy, all you need to do is count defenders on one side of the field. . . .
No room for debate, the Oracle has spoken.

Couple of minor thoughts;
1) Read an article this morning that indicates that Philadelphia's run defense since they added Ndamakong Suh has been 15th in the league.
2) Saw that Philly's pass defense, while impressive, is much less impressive when checked down to the 3rd and 4th receivers, ranking #22 against those receivers. Last year vs. the Eagles, Jauan Jennings had his first TD reception. Might be a big game for Jauan.
3) Similarly, the Eagles fare the weakest against Cover 3. 49ers play a lot of Cover 3, and Hurts likes to attack the seams. Fred Warner and Dre are going to need to have big days tomorrow..
4) Also, Eagles pass defense isn't quite as strong against RBs who catch the ball out of the backfield when they're not the first or second option, ranking #24 in the NFL. Maybe McCaffrey and Yoosh do well today.
5) Garoppolo's postseason passer rating going into last season's NFC championship game was much, much worse than Purdy's (63.0 vs. 109.4).
6) Purdy held the ball for an average of 3.49 seconds against Seattle versus 2.80 against Dallas. Philly allows an average of to opposing QBs, apart from the 70 sacks that Philly has done this year.
7) Jalen Hurts' passer rating in the postseason is 112.3, albeit solely against the weak Giants. Hurts becomes a mere mortal when facing the blitz, however, his EPA/Blitz stat is 13th in the league.
8) Niners appear to be fully healthy. Christian McCaffrey practiced yesterday; Elijah MItchell (groin) did not.
9) Philly has the #3 turnover margin at +9, but their special teams are ranked #13 overall. Maybe Ray Ray can have a big day. I'll bet Robbie will.
10) Only minor weakness on Philly's offensive line appears to be their LT, Jordan Mailata, against whom Bosa will line up. Bosa needs to have a big day tomorrow.
11) Purdy has thrown 59 passes without an interception in his first posteason, easily the longest of any rookie quarterback, breaking Norm Van Brocklin's record of 14, set back in 1949.
12) 49ers beat writers Matt Barrows and David Lombardi both pick the 49ers to beat the Eagles tomorrow. Both men are 14-5 over the season.

Niners will try to take the air out of the ball as much as possible. Shorten the game. They can win a game in low to mid 20’s. I don’t think they can win a high scoring game. It’s not what they are built to do.
A great example of their mind set was end of first half when Shanahan let clock run in last minute. I thought at the time that it was poor clock management. But his explanation - “I liked where we were at the time” 6-6, made sense. He recognized that he was in a defensive game and wasn’t going to risk a key turnover - or giving it back to Dallas with time left. One certainly can argue with that. But it’s a reasonable thought process. And I’m glad he’s not one of those coaches that simply goes by whatever the computer says you do. Games have feels to them. That should go into the mix when key “aggressive” vs “conservative “ decisions are made. One size does not fit all.

Since Da Bears and my pre-season pick to win the Superbowl (Bills) are out, I go by which team has players that I like, tilted heavily towards Stanford players.
Looking at the 4 remaining rosters:
-Eagles have no Stanford players since they got rid of Ertz, Herbig, and Arcega-Whiteside.
-Chiefs have 1: Justin Reid
-Bengals have 2: Trenton Irwin and Michael Thomas
-Niners have 3: McCaffrey, Curtis Robinson, and Connor Wedington
Robinson and Wedington may be on the practice squad, but all others are on active rosters on game days.
I'd like to see the Niners-Bengals matchup for the third Superbowl time.

Aren’t you the same person that proclaimed that Shanahan’s prior success was due largely to McDaniel?
Warner was an excellent QB. Don’t think he’s ever coached.
Shanahan is probably the most innovative coach in the run game of anyone in the NFL. He’s in his third Championship game in 4 years. And, remarkably for these times, he’s achieved that without an elite QB. Making him unique.
This has been his best season. No matter what happens today. So, perhaps it’s not the best time to pick nits.

Watch the all-22 video and you can see Kurt Warner isn't pointing out anything cosmic that has some crazy degree of difficulty to do.
I questioned the role McDaniel had in Shanahan's success, as I searched for answers why the Niners offense was struggling, when Miami's was humming along. I have never been as down on him as many Niners fans seem to be and recognize he is one of the best in the business. But that doesn't mean McDaniel couldn't have been providing something that it took Shanahan a while to adjust to not having, either.

In this era of, “commenting to stir up the masses” rather than “commenting to make a cogent point” has soured me on most commentary. Instead of stating something that is thought-provoking, the tendency is now geared towards making controversial remarks only for the sake of generating waves of reaction.
It is Cosellism taken to another level. My response - ignore the talking heads at ESPN (and elsewhere) who are more interested in shouting nonsense than making sensible observations.

Some preliminary thoughts on this Niners-Eagles matchup:
QB - Even (despite Hurts clearly being a superior physical athlete and Purdy a rookie)
RB - Even
WR - Eagles
TE - Niners
OL - Eagles
DL - Even
LB - Niners (this is the largest edge of any position group, IMO)
CB - Eagles
S - Niners
Even the positions I'd argue there is an edge, it's not like the other side is chopped liver. Nobody has a real advantage, IMO. That means it comes down to coaching (which includes execution), turnovers, and the vagaries of penalties.
Not really directed at OF. (Shockingly:)) But I’ve never understood why matchups are analyzed in this manner. You see it all the time. To me, its irrelevant, for example, how the Niners WR’s compare to Philly’s WR. What is relevant is how Niners WR match up to Eagles DB’s and vice-versa.
I have to go back a ways to think of my best example of this. But to me it’s the 1985 Super Bowl. When everyone was “comparing“ Montana and the Niner offense to Marino and Miami’s offense, and giving Miami the edge. Going into that game there was one glaring difference. The 49ers had a terrific defense, and Miami’s defense was decidedly average. So you had two elite units – 49er and Miami offense, one elite defense – 49ers, and one mediocre defense – Miami. Big edge to the 49ers. I knew they’d win that game. Course I have to go all the way back to ‘85 to find a time when I was actually right. But that’s another issue….
Trying to use a similar approach in this game is difficult. But I think where the Eagles have their biggest advantage is their wide receivers against the 49ers DBs. Brown is a beast and Smith is pretty damn good as well.
On the other side of the ball, Eagles have been average defending the run. And of course the 49ers are very good at exploiting that. Setting aside, turnovers, which always mix up any analysis, I think this game comes down to which of those groups wins. In other words, does the 49er, defensive backfield win their match up with the Eagles wide receivers. Conversely, can the 49ers run game, win their match up with the Eagles run defense. (I do think the Eagles will load the box and dare Purdy to beat them). If those happen, I think the 49ers win. Again, discounting turnovers. On the other hand, if the 49ers can’t run the ball effectively and give up A couple big plays to the Eagle WR’s it could be a very, very long day. Not just the 49ers losing, but getting hammered. (I realize this is kind of a “duh”. )
No predictions on the score. I will say this has been one of the most fun 49er years since the glory days of the 80’s. So, I’m very glad to have had the season extended to be able to watch these playoff games. Hoping it gets extended for just one more!

Mitchell inactive. That hurts. Going to be a question of how long CMac can go. Calf is tough in that it may tighten up. I expect we will see a fair amount of Sameuls at RB with CMac in slot.
Mason is big. Tough inside runner. He may get some touches. But I don’t think he’s part of any pass game. And you always worry about a rookie who hasn’t carried the ball a whole lot and fumbles in a game like this.

You telling someone to lighten up is hilarious. I was responding to the Warner comment not the funny video that you posted.
Your comment on McDaniel was significantly different than you now maintain. You did not “question his role”. You suggested McDaniel was the one behind Shanahans success. You also, btw, maintained that Shanahan needed a higher offensive coordinator because he couldn’t do it himself. But that’s OK.
What might help a little bit, is in addition to patting yourself on the back, is if you could actually acknowledge when you are wrong. Instead of holding yourself out as the Oracle of truth.
