While I do believe it will help in some cases, I doubt it is going to be a reliable way to "fix" lack of talent at a given position. The guys that are transferring are doing so because they couldn't break into the lineup where they were as fast as they wanted. Often it is because they are not as good as they think they are. It also may be due to the fact they are hard to coach. I think there will be many more misses than hits in the undergraduate portal.
As a counterpoint I will offer that three consecutive H-Man trophy winners (who subsequently were drafted first overall and became NFL starters) from 2017-2019 were undergraduate transfers (Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, Joe Burrow). By definition there will be more misses than hits due to the sheer numbers but there are plenty of examples of undergraduate transfers in the last few years who have had major impact on their new teams (Wan'Dale Robinson and Henry To'o To'o this year come to mind) so selectively recruiting transfers is going to continue to be a critical part of roster management; teams that eschew the transfer portal entirely or almost entirely (and Stanford may be in this group due to admissions issues) are going to be at a clear competitive disadvantage.
Totally agree there are diamonds in the portal. The situation at a few top-level schools almost ensures that some real good players have no shot and are informed of that early on. I think you can get lucky in the transfer portal, but in any given year when you need say a good DL candidate, there just may not be any. There may be DL folks in the portal, but they may not be players. Stanford needs to be active in looking, but shouldn't rely on the portal to fix shortfalls a a given position.

Yeah, it is worth noting that Stanford has a D-lineman transfer out via the portal, Bo Peek. As mentioned, most transfers out don't wind up contributing much.
That being said, there are a few prominent former Stanford players who have thrived post-transfer, including an offensive linemen in our next opponent.

Hattis is one of ASU's 8 transfers in their starting lineup.

Stanford's outgoing transfer losses in 2020 were BRUTAL and totally uncharacteristic compared to prior years (or 2021). Costello, Hamilton, Hattis, Powell, Williams, and Swann all started most or all of the games for their team (and Eboh started a game for UCLA). You can explain some of those departures, as some of those guys might not have started for Stanford, but the number and quality of departing players seemed to suggest a loss of confidence in the program. I hope Shaw has righted the program and that a similar spate of depatures doesn't happen again. But I also think Stanford's situation that year shows that there can be opportunity on the transfer portal, sometimes at the expense of a program that's faltering. Maybe like the situation at kal now. Stanford can't rely on filling a particular need whenever a gap in recruiting happens, but it can and should try to get a quality player via transfer here and there. Brennan Scarlett was a bit of a unicorn, but less elite players still could make a difference. And Stanford always has room within the 85 scholarship limit, so that is one advantage compared to some other schools.

A rundown of the six you mention:
Costello started first five games for Mississippi State then got benched mid-game 5 and for the rest of the season.
Hamilton started all 11 games for Duke.
Hattis started all 4 games for ASU, is back this year.
Powell started 4 of 8 games for Indiana, is back this year.
Swann started 1 of 8 games for Indiana.
Williams started 4 of 8 games for SMU.
Swann and Williams seemed most likely to have been starters at Stanford in 2020, but didn't exactly set the world on fire with their new teams.
(Williams had 6 tackles, 0 TFL; Swann had 4 tackles, 0 TFL)
The OL is more curious. None seemed clear to start at Stanford in 2020, but all did well with their new teams. That might not say anything good about coaching at Stanford, but it's not simple to sort out.
Not clear that these people graduating then starting graduate school and playing football at another school necessarily indicates a loss of confidence in the program. Of course it might, and it is not possible that coming off a 4-8 season leaves anything other than a bad taste in one's mouth.
But I want Stanford to run a program that has players graduate and then helps them find a next step that they like.

thanks CTCard. you saved me the trouble. the transfers hurt us depthwise, particularly on DL, and also that signal about so many players opting out of a 5th year to go elsewhere.

JT Daniels another QB who is doing well. Transfers have more impact today because of no waiting to play. It is counter productive to ignore the possibility of filling a gap.

Daniels wasn’t a grad transfer and had to apply for a special circumstances waiver.

No need to single out Daniels. There are lots of transfers, and graduating students moving to another university, that play well. There is no question that filling up with free agents where necessary helps a football team.
However, Stanford is not just a football team. It is also a university. Admitting graduate students has to be based in the graduate programs. Occasionally it will work out, but not frequently.

Why limit to grad students? Undergrads are filling up depth charts all over the country.

Yes, but they can't at Stanford. There are very few transfer opening available each year and even if admissions gave significant preference to football players (good luck with that) there can't be many admitted. Getting into graduate school at Stanford isn't easy either but there are many, many more available slots each year. Grad transfers will always have better odds. I am sure that Shaw will take undergrad transfers, but there simply aren't going to be lots of them.

Man do I hate it when the recruiting thread turns into some discussion topic that has the middle of a donut to do with recruits for the class the thread is supposed to be about...

Railing against thread drift is like railing against the tide. That being said, since this thread is pinned, it would be nice if it focused on recruiting for the class of 2022...

Back on topic, Mudia Reuben visited for the Oregon game and should be deciding within the month after 1 more visit. I believe we still want 3 WRs, so we'll see what happens offer-wise now that Cody Hagen opted to stay home.

Why make a new offer when Stanford can just continue to raid kal's recruiting class? Jaiven Plummer would be a nice addition to the class. :-)
Note: I have no idea whether this is realistic, but it'd be fun.

LB David Bailey would be a very nice addition, but I don't know if we can beat USC in spite of the coaching turmoil there.

I predict Hawkins will be a star. Played fb for only two years, 6'7" with basketball hands and skills.
