RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - lex24 - 01-29-2023

I’m an unabashed Shanahan supporter so gotta take my lumps. That was about as poorly coached a first half as you’re gonna find in a big game. Coaching negligence by failing to call a time out on that long pass to get it looked at. The blocking scheme to the extent there is one is got slaughtered. Two DOG penalties. And then the inexplicable decision after the eagles touchdown to do anything other than just hand ,the ball to McCaffrey three times get in the locker room and regroup. Just a really awful half.

I mean, no amount of coaching is going to overcome losing your third string and fourth string QB’s.  McCaffrey might be the QB next series.

Agree.  But it doesn’t change what a poor half he had.  Part of the problem relating to the quarterback injuries is the Eagles have consistently had somebody running free at the quarterback. Which is a blocking scheme issue.

Course they also have had no  help from the referees. Johnson, for example, got hit on the head. No call. McCaffrey got hit late. No call. Meanwhile Jimmie Ward brushes a guy on a third down and 10 and they get the penalty call.

Then there's getting blocked into the kicker.

The NFL has spoken.

Perreira is pathetic.  All he ever does is support the referees. They might as well just put a shill in there.

Agree on that. Not even a mention of the guy being blocked. . . .

I had the same thought.  It sure looked like he was pushed into the kicker.

That being said, a few blown calls aren’t the difference here.

If I'm on the 49ers D, I'm going to just start stabbing Eagles players in the face with my cleat on every play. If you're going to get penalties called on you every other play regardless, might as well have some fun with it.

Actually, BC three blown calls led to touchdowns. And the game is entirely different if that first one isn’t blown. Which also falls on Shanahan.

Not on Shanahan, but the upstairs coaches. Of course, Fox and the NFL weren't able to find that replay in a timely manner which didn't help matters, but I'll leave conspiracy theories for the Ukraine thread and dead Russian oligarchs. . . .

That said, Shanahan clearly should have prepared his team for the possibility that they'd have nobody who could pass the ball. McDaniel would have prepped for that. Allegedly, being a QB is easy, all you need to do is count defenders on one side of the ball.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - lex24 - 01-29-2023

I completely forgot about this. But throughout the playoffs, the NFL has gone to something called “replay assist.” They can review a play very quickly to let the officials know. They didn’t bother to do it on that play. That’s OK it’s only the NFC championship game. This is only a multi billion dollar industry.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - BostonCard - 01-29-2023

The refs weren’t responsible for the Niners having 164 total yards and two turnovers.  Yes, the game would have been much closer without some bad calls, but the Eagles would still have won.

On the blown drop, the Niners should have known something was up when the Eagles were rushing to the line.

BC

Sorry, three turnovers.

The giveaway was Adams signaling for a quick snap. Why do that after a long reception if it was a clean catch? Wouldn’t you want to give yourself and the linemen a chance to catch your breath after sprinting 30+ yards and have some time on the goal line play? Should have thrown the challenge flag on a hunch.

And Shanahan definitively saw that how? That's what the upstairs coaches are for, isn't it?

I didn’t say Shanghai should have noticed that. But the TV clearly showed Adams’ gesture. Somebody in the booth should have picked up on that and called down.

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough, but that was exactly my point. Someone upstairs/in the booth should have called down. Then again, with the "replay assist", a camera angle was clearly missed/ignored.

If only we had someone on this board with experience and expertise in NFL camerawork and broadcasts who could give us some insights as to why that angle wasn't seen. . . .

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - BostonCard - 01-29-2023

Lots of teams employ a hurry up after a big gain close to the goal line in the hope of catching the defense flat footed.

Bad luck, bad injuries, bad calls, bad no-calls, bad game.  Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad.  Bad-a-bing....

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - CompSci87 - 01-29-2023

I picked a good day to watch WBB first and then check the final score before watching much of the Niners game on DVR.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - OutsiderFan - 01-29-2023

It's truly remarkable that I can watch college games be officiated more competently than NFL games. In a collage game, the officials would stop play to allow the refs to review that 4th down play.

Everyone was cheated in that game. Just awful for every player, coach and fan. Didn't get to see a real game in the biggest one of the season.
