I suggest playing Matos every day to find out if he can take over an OF spot next year (or not). Matos, Lee and Ramos manning the outfield every day would be a good start to building the 2025 lineup.
The #1 need is finding an everyday shortstop. Perhaps a time warp might bring back a 25 year old Brandon Crawford. Otherwise, it is Luciano or who knows……

So we go out and commit an additional $400 million to free agent talent. We get two of Boras' best (Chapman and Cy Young winner Snell), we get a prior Cy Young winner (Ray), we get the best-ever player from Korea (Lee). We get former Gold Glove winner Nick Ahmed. We get 30 HR hitter Soler. We get Tom Murphy, a solid backup catcher, and Curt Casali returns as another backup catcher. We get Jordan Hicks who, at worst, will be a capable long reliever (and has turned into an excellent starter). We were supposed to have All-Star Cobb back. We get Stanford's Erik Miller. We get Mr. Rodriguez. We deep-six the former manager and get the manager that almost everyone wants, former Giant/Old Blue Bob Melvin. We get former Giant stud at 3BC, Matt Williams. We get former manager Pierce as pitching coach. We get former 1st overall pick Pat Burrell as hitting coach.
That sounds like a lot of good news.
Last year at this time, we were +11, 44-33. This year, we're -5 at 36-41, the third worst record in the NL and 2.5 games behind the last wild card slot. That's an eight game outcome swing over the first 77 games. That's, um...hard to do, even if you're not trying hard. And we know they're trying hard.
Before the Giants signed $400 mms. worth of talent, I thought they would win 75. With all that talent, I thought they could win more than 90. Not looking too good. There's 85 games left for them to turn it around. It can happen, but they need to get going NOW.

IMO, the problem can be summed up thusly - SS has been a black hole, starting pitching has been awful and the bullpen has been worked to exhaustion. That equals a .500 club (at best).
The good news - the long term prognosis is still very good. Ramos has been a revelation, I still have high hopes for Luciano (if they can find a position for him to play), the pitching depth in the farm system looks very promising and the bullpen should be fine (if the starters don’t cause them to be overworked).

2B hasn't done us any favor. Our collective 2B WAR (24th in MLB) is actually worse than SS (22nd in MLB). Relief pitching (24th in MLB) is bad, starting pitching is worse (27th in MLB WAR) and overall pitching is 28th in WAR. Giants pitching is 25th in runs per game allowed, but 10th in FIP, so...limited good news.

You left out that the Giants are last in the league in stolen bases and also last in number of stolen bases given up. The differential between the two is something around 60. Teams are running wild on the Giants. That falls on Melvin and his coaching staff. At least the stolen bases against. The team has no speed so it’s understandable why they don’t run.

Very nice tribute to Willie Mays tonight. Every player wore #24. Pretty darned cool.
Erik Miller of Stanford started his seventh game tonight...he has the fifth most starts for the Giants, just passed up Snell. Miller pitched a good inning, one walk, no hits. Howard, who looks extremely hittable to me, gave up five baserunners in 4 2/3 innings with no runs. Struck out eight.
Giants had an interesting walk-off win tonight, on a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the night. Slater had a long sac fly to knock in the tying run.

No reason to get excited. The last time the Giants came from behind in the 9th (last Monday), they proceeded to lose five in a row. Once they post a 10 out of 12 string, it will be time to take them seriously.

I can't understand how Howard occasionally strikes out so many with such a hitable 94 mph fastball. It doesn't have any break. I thought he would be sent back down, but not now. Man, their pitching is a mess, and looks like Hicks may be running out of steam. Hope not, 'cause I like him.

Agreed. Howard's major league numbers are terrible...with Philly, 1-4, 5.80 ERA; with Texas, 2-7, 8.37 ERA. 10.80 ERA last year. Just kept getting worse and worse. And he's 3.80 ERA with 3.06 FIP with SFG. HOW? WHY? His pitches look like Mike Kickham's...he can throw hard, but really straight. And he has a 1.688 WHIP, so he's obviously getting extremely lucky. Hicks has given up 14 earned runs in his last five starts, 22 2/3rds IP.
Definitely a two-wheeled landing...

Yay!!! The Cardboard is back, and the Giants win 3 in a row. Conforto, Villar, maybe up for the last time, and Matos each hit a homer. Conforto's was a 2 run poke. Birdsong, who had pitched in two, I think, Triple A games, managed 4 2/3, and looked pretty good.

The Giants are exactly halfway through their season at 39-42. Last year's team, under the old regime without $400 million worth of free agents, was 45-36, or three games under .500 vs. nine games over .500. Still, the Giants are just three games out of the last wild card spot.
Luciano, Bailey, Ramos, Sabol and Wade are all having excellent seasons (OPS+ over 131). Fitzgerald, Wisely and Villar are having very good seasons (OPS+ between 112-118). Yaz, Conforto, Soler, and Chapman are slightly above average (101-107 OPS+). Flores, Estrada, Slater, Ahmed, Matos, Casali and Schmitt are all between 80 and 89 OPS+. Some of them are showing signs of picking it up. Soler and Snell have always done better in the second half than the first half (hard to do worse, re: Snell).
Giants just went above MLB average for runs per game (4.38 to 4.36). Their collective OPS+ is 105, which is better than it was a few weeks ago. Hitting and scoring is picking up.
Pitching...not so much, reflecting the injury situation. Runs allowed per game is 4.73, 23rd in MLB. WHIP is even worse, 27th in MLB. Two good signs...most of their pitchers will be back over the next month. Harrison, Ray, Snell, Cobb, Winn...all are making progress, some are close. Other good sign is that FIP is 11th in MLB, not bad.
The dichotomy between FIP/ERA and WHIP is because Giants fielding is dead last in the league (-44 Rtot), despite having four excellent fielders in Chapman, Ahmed, Bailey and Yastrzemski. Dodgers are +44 Rtot...an 88 run difference over the first half of the season.
Last stats: Giants total WAR is -2.4, 20th in MLB. Here it is by position:
3B, 2nd overall in MLB
RF, 4th
Catcher, 6th
1B, 9th
CF, 12th
LF, 16th
DH, 20th
Relief pitching, 22nd
2B, 23rd

Starting Tuesday, three games in Atlanta (46-36), three in Cleveland (52-30, Stephen Vogt is doing a great job with them), then two home series against the Blue Jays (38-45) and Twins (47-37). Be nice to go 7-5 against those teams before the All-Star Break.
