What is the takeaway? "Spend, don't save" or "don't pay off your student loans"?

Ferrari - I'm dying to know what a "retried bean" is and what greater impact it has on the earth's atmosphere? Let the Mexican food jokes fly forth!
Can you know get them at Chipotle? Is it safe?
Ten years ago today, the Rev Albert Gore assured us that by today, the planet would be uninhabitable due to man made climate change, mainly the gas caused by eating retried beans. Last one, please turn off the lights. Conserve!

I don't see why this is a big deal. The Constitution's prohibition of double jeopardy has never been held to extend to beans, as Robert Horn emphasized repeatedly in his poli sci course on constitutional law.
"[N]or shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb...."Â U.S. Const., Amend. V.Â
Pretty straightforward, really. A bean is not a person, and cannot be said to have limbs. Whether beans have "lives," however, has not been addressed by caselaw.Â
I wonder about the necessity of even holding trials for beans, really. Seems like a waste of judicial resources when beans lack brains, and thus lack the ability to form the culpable mental state which is a necessary element of most offenses. I should think that summarily whipping or boiling the rogue beans would be perfectly consistent with the Constitution.Â

Ah, I thought the offending beans in question were of the sort that one might use in Mexican food. Boiling or whipping coffee beans would clearly violate the 8th Amendment's strictures against cruel and unusual punishment, and I would never condone such a thing. If punishing coffee beans were required, I should think the standard guillotine-like grinding process would suffice. Or, if you're feeling merciful, throw it in the compost and let it die a slow, pungent death.Â

Coffee beans are not beans.
Quote:In English usage, the word bean is also sometimes used to refer to the seeds or pods of plants that are not in the family leguminosae, but which bear a superficial resemblance to true beansfor example coffee beans, castor beans and cocoa beans (which resemble bean seeds), and vanilla beans, which superficially resemble bean pods.

In this age of political correctness and hypersensitivity to micro-aggression I am shocked that some here, who might be considered "enlightened" have no sympathy for beans. Is it because they don't look like you? Or simply that they didn't get admitted? Whatever, I am ashamed of you. Open your minds, learn, and hopefully grow.
"Despite the fact that science is finally recognizing plants as sensual beings, the dominant attitude toward plants still assumes a lack of feeling and awareness. Our ethics of plant life has not caught up with this new information. This is evident in the continued deforestation of the worlds most biodiverse ecosystems like the Amazon rainforest, and our willingness to play around with plant DNA in the lab.
Hopefully, as our attitudes toward nature and the Earth continue to shift, we will start to live in balance with the plants and animals we share this beautiful, magical planet with, as if everyday were Earth Day."

Speaking of beans, one of the most enduring memories of my first day at Stanford was encountering garbanzo beans in the chow line at Wilbur. I knew then that I was not in New England anymore......

I do think this thread is good for putting random interesting links that I might not have shared otherwise because I didn't think it would be so interesting as to deserve its own thread, like the article on wall-punchers.

Stanford kid won on the college edition of Jeopardy tonight. He had to answer Californium and Berkelium on elements questions, but still did it, unlike the LSU kid a couple days back who seemed to avoid answering Spurrier and Derrick Henry college football questions (or he just didn't know them).

I don't know if it was meant to be a joke, but most people seem to be responding that way. I did notice that there were some new off topic threads and no one was sent to the hospital. I would say go ahead and make an off topic post in the next football thread, then stand back and listen for gun shots.
