I'm not denying that 'SC has the potential to be a great program and that it has the most historical success, but as many have pointed out, their national performance hasn't been exceptional for a while and in living memory, it was only a relative few years with PC at the helm that they were a dominant performer. They're not the team that the national pundits point to as an example of how to "do it right" on the west coast and they haven't won a conference championship in years. They are not a "rock" on which a conference can rely for regular elite performance like 'Bama, ND, Ohio State, Texas, etc.

Wilner and other confuse most valuable brand with flagship program. Right now, all 'SC has is "potential".

Pete Carroll knew how to make those $C players tick.  $C has continued to recruit those same kinds of players, but none of the coaches, with perhaps the exception of Ed Orgeron, have been able to rally or lead the program.  (NB: Same thing with Jim Mora--you think there would be intra-squad Twitter sniping if Mora had the team's buy-in?)

We may have broken Under Stanford Control (again), but I think we should be happy that we aren't playing them in the second half of the season. They are on a roll now, and guess who is the top ranked QB in college football these days (at least according to ESPN)? You guessed it, Max Browne's replacement, Sam Darnold. Our win against Literature's Most Famous Losers is going to keep looking better as the season goes on.
