On Qwerty's too-rare post, about our success running on 3rd down with Gerhart:
Conversions on runs on 3rd and four or more
Toby, 2010: 5-15â¨
Mac, 2015:Â 3-8
Mac, 2016:Â 3-10
Gaffney, 12: 2-9
On third and seven or more
Toby, 2010: 3-6
Mac, 2015:Â 0-5
Mac, 2016:Â 1-4
Gaffney, 12: 2-6
Small samples, of course, so hard to know what to conclude. The median run does some a useful stat, as well as average yards on first downs and percentage of first down runs of five or more yards.Â

And a good point about the slight decline in our big (10+ and 20+ running play).
Perhaps another way of looking at our success running last season versus the season before:
Mac and Love, 2015:Â 366 carries, 2245 yards
Mac and Love, 2016:Â 364 carries, 2386 yards
My eyes and memory didn't tell me those numbers above would be coming.

I would be interested in knowing the median yards per attempt each year as well, and/or the standard deviation of the yards per attempt.
Well, that makes two of you.

I would prefer a Monte Carlo simulation which could give us a clue as to how our running game will improve (or degradate) over the next 5 years.

Although I realize you are not serious in this request, it does actually go right to the point I was trying to make. Running plays (or football plays in general) are not random variables. There also are not so many of them that you can meaningfully treat them as random. We try do do so with yards per carry and the like because we have no other tools besides the "eye test", which is unsatisfactory as it is a subjective personal judgement. If football were statistical, you could hope to do a "Monte Carlo simulation" and we would know with a given level of confidence what would happen next year. Fortunately, it isn't statistical, and we can have these discussions ;DÂ

I scanned this thread a bit. Are there any posts about Sat's scrimmage? Or in another thread? Thank you.

OK, I found another thread, but not much there - I had already read the KJ story.

Welcome to the off-season, Cap. Off season is like those nature films about the caribous' long migrations where the race is on to make it to the new feeding grounds before starvation takes them all. My peeve is breathless announcements of Coach Shaw's comments on [insert football aspect here]... and it is just about as bland as bland can be. Could be auto-generated by some quote mash-up program running on an old Dell computer. This isn't unique to Shaw, it's a coaching speech impediment they all share. But still, I read it all. Or go to the Notre Dame boards to read their complaints. Dunno why, but it makes me feel better to see them snarling at each other.

Maybe it's my imagination, but it seems to me that the news on spring practice is particularly sparse and bland this year.

I would agree. It does seem there is certainly less "hype". Maybe not less real information (about zero both then and now), but not as much attention.

I really liked the sfgate story that mentioned Michael Williams, Cotton, Toohill and Okereke were having impressive springs. DL and LB is where we need people to step up.

David appears to be bland and low key. Perfect attitude for most of his roster. I think they understand how competitive he is. Harballs took over at, as Patton said, the right place at the right time. Shaw is in that place right now. I enjoyed spending a bit of time with him on our "60" shoot a couple of years ago.

If Williams and Cotton are stepping up, could this foreshadow a starting DL of Phillips, Cotton and Williams in some order?Â
Does no positive words about Dylan Jackson suggest Cotton has supplanted him? Really thought Jackson would grow into a Henry Anderson type, but not seeing any evidence yet. He's only listed at 261 on the roster now.Â
Haven't heard much about Peek, Swann, or Schaffer.

On the status of quarterback Keller Chryst, a Palo Alto High graduate who suffered a knee injury in the Sun Bowl, and fullback Daniel Marx, who was lost for the season with a lower leg injury: Theyre both on course. Not exactly sure when Daniel will be 100 percent, but Keller is right on schedule to be back full go at training camp. Hopefully we wont have any setbacks between now and then, but hes on course.
...
I love our secondary, Shaw said. Theyre athletic, theyre young. They play well together, theyre fast.
He credited defensive backs coach Duane Akina for the progress of the young group.
Quenton Meeks is back full speed and healthy, bringing his energy and passion, Shaw said. Justin Reid is practicing and playing at a high level. Ben Edwards is taking a step, Ben Simmons has taken a brobdingnagian step, so weve got a lot of guys in that defensive secondary right now that have game experience, that are very passionate about what they do, they are great communicators and they want to be a very, very good unit.

Comments - "I did not see where the big plays will come from (other than Love). Costello is clearly running 2nd string. Lot riding on Chryst (who was not even that dominant last year). They don't have playmakers on the outside. But they should be really good with strong defense and running game."

I wonder if some of our "big plays" are still in high school. Besides Sarell and Little, is it unreasonable to expect fellow frosh Parkinson (TE), St. Brown (WR) and Wedington (RB?, KR?) to produce a few big-gainers?
Re: Spring practice thread -
washingtonismoney - 04-13-2017
It's maybe unreasonable to *expect* they will, but I don't think it's wrong to hope they will.

Sadly, probably it is. Early in the season, it is improbable that they will know enough of the offense to get them on the field, especially given the tendency of the coaching staff to redshirt freshmen. If we get past USC and UCLA, it will be "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". If we don't, why burn a redshirt for a non-contending year? Also, I think the staff would tell you that Irwin and Arcega-Whiteside are "good enough". And they may be, if we can run reliably and protect the QB at least fairly well. It is always possible that one (or more) of the freshman receivers is so good they can't keep him on the bench. But that will take a LOT of convincing to make happen.

Surprising comments on playmakers outside given all the praise that Irwin has received and given the fact that JJ definitely made some plays last year. Also he expected Chryst to be "dominant" in his first few games at the helm?
Re: Spring practice thread -
Hulk01 - 04-14-2017
He cites Stanford's lack of playmakers "on the outside" because Irwin and AW aren't yards-after-the-catch guys. Neither guy has the speed and quickness to turn a five yarder into a brobdingnagian gain a la Smith-Schuster, and neither is a true deep threat a la Rector or John Ross.Â
I share this concern.Â
