They ran that [box and one] some while Karlie was in, with Karlie getting the "one" treatment. Sometime Tara has dealt with that by having Karlie stand way in a corner and playing 4 on 4, but once at least, they ran a play where Karlie came around and set a screen, giving another player a wide open shot. The announcers remarked on that one.

Later the announcers commented they were running a diamondtriangle and 2 (Karlie & Brittany).  Immediately Alanna sunk a wide-open three.

YES!  That's the consequence of not having a single star to shut down.

For all the comments of how well ND was shooting at half time, Stanford wound up with a better percentage in both FG and 3FG.  The team was 8/10 FT (with no FTA by Karlie).

Interesting that their coach claimed they were more worried about Bird and thus let McPhee beat them. I, too, saw the triangle and two as focusing on Karlie and Britt.

Did ND run these defenses much during the regular season? Or did they install them after Turner went down? And why did they stay with these even though they were ineffective in the second half?

Quote:A comeback of this nature against this opponent in this arena was never going to be the work of one person. Stanford fans -- and even just basketball fans who enjoyed a game in which the fourth quarter alone featured six ties and 13 lead changes -- will remember Erica McCall's block on Arike Ogunbowale's shot in the final seconds to preserve the win. They will remember Alanna Smith twice reclaiming the lead with field goals in the final 51 seconds. They will remember Karlie Samuelson because, well, it's always difficult to forget someone who will shoot the ball from lengthy distances that to her are routine.

They should not be able to forget McPhee as the lead architect of it all.

A really, really good paragraph summing up our feelings about this game.

And the whole Graham Hayes article is well worth the read.  Good sports writing, as it captures the emotion of the season and of the game and the way this team improved this season.

Our potential future opponents are playing on ESPN now.  I haven't watched either South Carolina or Florida State earlier this year.  A'ja Wilson is quite the player.  Not many 6'5", strongly built women who can move and shoot like that.

Can you say sagging player to player defense?  Or maybe even a zone?

I suppose you could see the triangle part as focusing on Bird. Whenever they were running any kind of zone and Bird was down low, she was getting blanketed.

We have our opponent: South Carolina.

Let's see if we can get A'ja Wilson in foul trouble early. Bri, Marta and Britt will have their hands full with Kaela Davis and Allisha Gray, who was tough to contain when she was with UNC in our Elite 8 matchup 3 years ago.

Ouch! Oregon was steamrolled tonight by UConn - 90-52.  UConn looks tough again this year.

That box score for SCar-FSU is all over the place.  Both teams couldn't buy a three.  SCar only had 2 offensive rebounds but dominated with 29 defensive rebounds (compared to 18/18 for FSU).  FSU had more assists and steals with fewer turnovers, but the Noles' shooting was ice cold (37% for the game).  SCar only played two bench players (no depth?)--for SCar, Wilson+Davis+Harris combined to shoot 21-30 for the game.  Gray was 4-7, and the other three went 1-7.  Yeesh.

FSU looked pretty bad to me through much of the game, playing a wild run and gun style. SCar had some foul trouble, especially on Wilson. Our game against them will look way different, so it's hard to guess how we'll do. Karla Davis will deserve a lot of attention.

Among the remaining three teams, I give our ladies the best chance to win because of their mental toughness & grit. Let's root for them to get there and then worry about the Huskies.

Player to player? Has it come to that?
