Re: This week in opponent games - teejers1 - 10-21-2017

Stanford's 2 Ls to date are looking worse and worse.

But that's okay, because Stanford is going to have to win its way to the P12 championship (forget about national rankings).

Agree that Arizona looks, right now, to be strongest team in the south.

Agree that Cal's upward trajectory is plain to see and that Wilcox & Co. can coach.  I would have kicked the EP; however, I have a certain admiration for how the Bears opted to go for the W right there (I will say that Arizona scored 2 TDs in exactly 3 plays in the 2OTs, so there is some reason for Wilcox not liking his chances the longer the game dragged on).

Washington state at Arizona next week end will be an interesting contrast in style.

I would argue ASU looks like the best team in the South, and the favorite to win the division. Knocked off previously unbeaten Huskies in only allowing a touchdown, before crushing Utah on the road by 20, and holding them to 10 points. Plus they get SC and Arizona at home. Nevertheless, to think Rich Rod and Todd Graham were the two Pac-12 coaches that were most on the hot seat coming into this season, other than Jim Mora of course. That UCLA has not played in a Pac-12 Championship Game in 5 years with their recruiting classes, while UA, ASU and Colorado have all had CCG berths, is pretty telling.

anyone remember the name of Fresno State's current coach?  He used to be very popular in Berkeley.

Fresno State up now 27-3 on SDSU. It would be ironic if Stanford and ASU played for the Pac-12 Championship, having both lost to SDSU (ASU at home), who will likely not play for the Mountain West title if the score holds (Fresno State would be effectively ahead by 3 games in the division standings with only five conference games left). If anything, to me, it would be a sign of how teams change over the course of the season, for better or for worse.

It is what it is.  The Aztecs will be 6-2 and look like a 4-4 team.

Re: This week in opponent games - BostonCard - 10-22-2017

Cal should finish 7-5 which is definitely an improvement over last year.  That being said, other than OSU, none of the remaining games are guaranteed; the line on Cal-Colorado opened at even, and its game at UCLA will be at the Rose Bowl.  Boy are they happy to have that win over WSU right now, or else they could be looking at yet another collapse down the stretch.

Re: This week in opponent games - BostonCard - 10-22-2017

PS, despite the unfortunate result, going for two is the right call.  Cal would have had to go on offense first at the next OT, which is a disadvantage (because the other team knows what it needs to get; if they stop you, they can play conservative and go for the FG, while if you score a TD, they know they have to go for it on fourth down).  Thus, if you have an opportunity to win the game by going for two, you should do it.

Re: This week in opponent games - OutsiderFan - 10-22-2017

Colorado is hot garbage.  Cal should be favored - and will win - in Boulder, IMO.

Was 5-0 in my W-L predictions yesterday, and 3-2 against the spread. Need my head examined for believing Southern Cal would cover the 3.5 they were getting at South Bend.

So many of these games are about when you play the opponent.  If Stanford had SDSU or USC this week, Stanford most likely wins.  If ASU had SDSU this week, ASU wins.  If Cal played Oregon this week, Cal wins. If Arizona played Utah this week, Arizona wins, etc.

Can't help wondering what has happened to SDSU. They also almost got beat by Air Force, a team that is having one of their worst years in some time. Perhaps they are like the Stanford teams of old, who would beat an Ohio State one week and then turn around and lose to someone like SJS the next,

Indeed it will, in many areas. The WSU defense has looked pretty good this year, but they aren't big. Arizona runs the ball, but they are more speed and read than straight ahead power. Arizona's pass defense was pretty good against UCLA, so maybe the WSU matchup will be in their favor. Arizona will also be at home. Should be interesting.

I mean, perhaps they've gotten worse since we played, but losing that game was a perfect storm. We absolutely shouldn't have and if we replayed it now we'd crush them. Sometimes a team just stinks it up and loses a game they shouldn't, that was a case of that happens.

Right. Remember back to 2016. Stanford whips SC 27-10. Penn State loses to Pitt. The losing teams go to the Rose Bowl.

Separately, I've been as big a Clay Helton skeptic as anyone -- but I didn't anticipate it falling apart as fast as it has. I figured he'd spiral down post-Darnold.

Re: This week in opponent games - washingtonismoney - 10-22-2017

FWIW, this week's games did have a modest negative effect for Stanford's ranking in two statistical systems:

Sagarin ranked Stanford #13 going into the week, and now the Cardinal's down to #14. Meanwhile, in ESPN's system, Stanford went from 9 expected wins and the #12 ranking to 8.8 expected wins and #13.

EDIT: make that three -- S&P+ dropped Stanford a spot, from 15 to 16, as well: https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2017/10/22/16516370/ncaa-football-rankings-2017-130-teams

As someone who follows both Stanford and SDSU, I can tell you what happened to the Aztecs. They came into the season with a young offensive line and it finally caught up with them. They were fine in September when they were healthy, but then the lone returning starter went down with an injury and some of the others are playing with the usual mid-season nicks and scrapes. Experienced guys know how to deal with that stuff, younger guys have to learn. Penny and Chapman have had zero blocking, and with no ball control by the offense, the defense is wearing down. Bad combo, but the game of football begins up front.
