Much better in the second half, especially Carrington and Smith. Carrington is still a bit raw but has great upside. She slowed down a bit today and is making much better decisions. The way she handles the ball makes me wonder if she could be viable as a PG if Williams does not develop.
Were simply not at the same talent level, but Im sure well have some nice moments this year.

The second half was not a disaster, as we outscored them 39-29, as they stepped off the gas pedal and we gained some composure.
I think the game was a learning experience and especially, it being the second game of the season, we can use it as the bar to aspire to. Now, UConn is at another level, but if we can work towards that, even if it's not ultimately attainable this season, we have a benchmark for this year and beyond.
Just looking at the box score, Carrington was our only double digit scorer, but if she backs this up through even better performances against lesser opponents (which when compared to UConn is pretty much everyone), she can give Tara 3 pieces to build the lineup around (DiJonai, Brit, Alanna).
Marta still hasn't shed that unwillingness to shoot, just 1 field goal attempt -- a made 3. Kiana acquitted her decently well, but I didn't see anything remarkable from Anna. If Kiana can gain some experience in the softer part of the schedule and run the offense, Marta might see less playing time.
As for the 5, that's still very much open. Kaylee still hasn't progressed much around the basket on the offensive end, we haven't seen much from Nadia. Dodson didn't get much playing time, but I would like to see how well she does against Riverside and Bakersfield this week.
Come later this season, I could see a starting lineup of Kiana, DiJonai, Brit, Alanna and Maya potentially.

I missed some of it but from what I saw and the stats, second half was better. I'm not that unhappy about the game. Seeing as we are playing a whole lot of young players against top teams with little time to gel, I am still optimistic the team will be very good eventually, key word being eventually. Carrington had probably her best overall game all things considered, and still has plenty of room to grow. She was the best thing about this game. Nice that Williams got some run and while she did not score much, she looked comfortable running the offense. She will push Sniezek for the point guard job. Sneizek was ok, with few turnovers and she did hit the three (hot tip to Marta - do that more!!!!!!). Overall I like the changes to the offense, or I will once we get the offense down better. I was never a of exceedingly large proportions fan of so many ball screens given our personnel. Smith got going in the paint in the second half and rebounded pretty well. Dodson had her struggles with the very talented UConn front line but she looks to me like she may end up very good, very soon. Same with Jerome - not a great day but she did enough good things that I hope Tara keeps giving her and the rest of the freshmen a lot of rope. Fingall and Coffee hitting threes early in the season is fun to see.Â
I'm not sure what will be with Johnson. On the one hand, she is a 4 year starter, an excellent rebounder, and certainly knows what is going on out there. One the other hand, she has been getting into foul trouble a lot and her lack of offense really hurts. Basically I don't think we can have two players who are not scoring threats on the floor at once a lot, which means it might be hard to play Kaylee and Marta together that much. I agree with the posts above that a less experienced but maybe more dynamic line-up might be much better for us down the road.

I remember Kaylee's first half dozen games as a freshman. She grabbed 20+ rebounds in two of those games, including I think, our upset win over UConn at Maples. There was also a story early that season with a comment from her high school coach predicting boldly that Kaylee would lead the conference in rebounding, even her freshman year. Her offensive skills were limited, but you thought with time and working with the coaches and seeing McCall in there, she could have developed at least a few moves under the basket. But she continues to look unsure and hesitant under the basket and you can see the UConn defense in the first half forcing the ball into her hands. Meanwhile, she hasn't put up those rebounding numbers either. Maybe it's partly due to our scheme or more limited playing time, but it's disappointing and mystifying that we haven't seen much advancement in those few seasons.
As for Marta, I would love to see how she scored in high school. She averaged nearly 30 pts a game and once scored 43 points in a game, according to a Washington Post article her senior year of high school. I know D1 competition is much tougher, but she's not even attempting to shoot, despite opponents leaving her wide open. I'm not sure why she has an aversion to shooting the ball herself, particularly when opposing teams are giving her so much space. She doesn't have to be a Karlie out there or take 10 shots every game, but given her passing acumen, she could be even more difficult to defend if she can shoot some jumpers when called for.

Thats probably the starting lineup with the best potential. Is Wilson still slowed by injury? It would be nice if she can contribute this year in a meaningful way.
We dont really have a Samuelson-level shooter and that will ultimately be the limiting factor for us this year IMHO.
Dangerfield was great to watch....Nice reload for Geno.

It makes me envious that she showed an instant ability to step in and contribute transitioning as a bench player her freshman year to her second season, as even though Carrington had a great game today, we haven't seen that instant improvement from Fingall yet.
The luxury Geno has every year is that he has a top class with top-5 recruits, so he has time to ease the freshmen in. His highly touted #1 recruit this year Megan Walker doesn't have to step in her first collegiate game and score 20. She can play behind Gabby Williams, KL and Collier, etc. and gradually gain experience and playing time. And when they graduate, she has confidence and game knowledge to step in and teach the next #1 recruit, which the Huskies got in Christyn Williams recently for next year's incoming class.

Will these two games spur the team into putting together a great performance and return the beatdown on an inferior opponent as we just received?
Or will we relax too much and play down to the competition?
This is where senior leadership and example comes into play I think. It's important not only to learn from tough losses against great teams, but to continue to develop and maintain good habits, especially when you are in control against an easier opponent.

The fact that this is a young team makes me suspect that they will bounce back from these losses and show great improvement next weekend. For example, they undoubtedly got an earful about their poor rebounding and made it a point of emphasis to improve today--and they did. They are learning.Â
They won't overlook next weekend's teams because 1) they probably got a dressing down for their discombobulated performance against UCSD, 2) the upperclassmen will want to get this weekend's taste out of their mouths, and 3) the youngsters are all going to want to show Tara how fast they can learn and how much they can do so as to earn playing time.
As for ranking--UCLA has Baylor and UConn next weekend. C.al also gets UConn next weekend. Oregon State has Votre Dame. Will be interesting to see how they all do. Maybe I missed something, but all the other powerhouses ranked higher than us are just squashing overmatched opponents so far--Ohio State and Louisville excepted.
Meanwhile, Lili aquitted herself quite well in Notr e Dame's beatdown of Mt. St. Mary's. 8 assists to 1 turnover, 10 points in 25 minutes starting. I wish her well, and really would prefer not to meet Notr e Dame this year.
