Michigan Men's Hoops and Hockey could pick up as many as 200 Cup points, significant considering that they lagged Stanford by about 270 points in the first official Winter standings.Â As a partial offset, Michigan earns no Cup points in Fencing and Stanford earns 57.Â

We'll have a lot fewer scenarios to consider after Winter results including Hockey post on April 12.

In the second D1 Winter standings released today, Stanford leads with a total of 977.50 points and Penn State is second with 753.75 points.Â The Cardinal have widened their lead by 69 points since the March 22 standings.Â

I have been tracking points in the required sports for Stanford and the next ten teams as of 3/22.Â In the four required sports, Stanford has 147 points, third behind Michigan with 165 and Texas with 162.Â Of 1299 points scored to date by these eleven schools, 50% were in Women's Volleyball, 29% were in Women's Basketball, and 21% were in Men's Basketball.Â With Baseball doing so well, it looks like the new scoring for required sports will not hurt us much, if at all, in the final standings.

The Frozen Four semifinals tonight pit Minnesota Duluth against Ohio State and Michigan against Notre Dame.Â Each stands to pick up a minimum of 83 Cup points and gain ground on Stanford.

In the remaining NCAA sports, here's how Stanford compares to UCLA in a few different categories (relevant not just for the Directors' Cup, but for the overall NCAA championship lead):

1. They've got an edge

* Women's gymnastics: UCLA #2; Stanford "others receiving votes"
* Softball: UCLA #3; Stanford unranked
* Beach volleyball: UCLA #2; Stanford #13

2. We're close

So, perhaps on balance we might have more chances at a title or some solid points, but given how concentrated UCLA's teams are in the top 5, you have to like their chances of getting a couple more NCAA titles before the year is done.

In WWP we have beaten UCLA a couple of times, the other day 8-5.
In Women's Golf we are in a tournament with them in Napa right now and they lead us by a single stroke.Â

Men's golf has several questions heading into the Pac-12 tourney. I don't envy Conrad in trying to pick the right lineup...

Jeffrey Swegle, a senior who nobody expected to be a regular member of the lineup, has had a good sprint and played #1 at Western Intercollegiate and lived up to his position, with the lowest aggregate score for the team. However, he finished behind Bradley Knox, who was playing as an individual. That means Knox went into the tournament as #7 on the team, but he finished best of any Stanford player. If he had been in the lineup, Stanford probably finishes third instead of sixth. Knox was expected to be a regular, but played himself out of the lineup earlier in the spring. So, do you insert him into the lineup for the Pac-12s?

Brandon Wu, who played really well in the fall, is playing decent. Franklin Huang, who was supposed to be the #1, is playing solidly, but not great. Same story with Isaiah Salinda. Two underclassmen, Henry Shimp and Ashwin Arasu, have been given their chances and have done OK. David Snyder also made the lineup for this last tournament.

Conrad has 5 guys vying for the final three spots at the Pac 12 (Wu, Swegle, Huang are safe). Then cut one more for the Regionals. Just hope that Conrad can pick the hot hands, or this team won't make the NCAA championships. Last year he went with experience, which would mean Swegle, Huang, Wu, Salinda, Knox and Shimp.

Also, because of the uncertainty in a golf tournament, I think #13 versus #23 probably would fall under the category of "we're close" rather than we have a definitive edge.

Projecting our final 19 Cup sports....

Fifteen sports count in the current total of 977.50.Â This includes 0 for Men's Basketball (required), 25 for Women's Field Hockey, and 40 for Wrestling.

Going forward we have at least:

Baseball (required)
Men's Gymnastics
Women's Water Polo
Men's Tennis

This gets us to the limit of nineteen scoring sports and a Cup points total in the neighborhood of 1300.

What sports are the best candidates to replace Field Hockey and Wrestling and thus add to the above estimated total?

So in gross points roughly 70 for women and 48-50 for men (lots of ties in this score area, hence guesstimate). I'm unclear about the gender fidelity of swap outs, so will leave any net speculation to BEC.

I think it is likely that women's tennis turns it on for NCAAs. They only have 3 losses (all to top 10 teams while our #2, Melissa Lord, was out injured), they're currently ranked 22nd, and if they can win out and get a Top 16 seed, they will be a classic underseeded Stanford team that no one wants to play, now that Lord is back healthy.

The first two rounds of the 64-team tournament are at campus sites (so a Top 16 seed means you get to stay at home), and then the final 16 teams all go to one location (this year, at Wake Forest) for the remainder of the tournament. If Stanford makes it to Winston-Salem, that's at least 64 points.
