I think I read that Schaefer retired from football, but I can’t recall the source

Updated to reflect injury to
Ben Edwards, moving
Malik Antoine to starter going into the Oregon game. (How glad are we now that he moved to safety.)

As far as participation in the Oregon game, there are two names that stood out to me in the game report. Both
Jordan Perez and
Kendall Williamson were listed as having gotten game time. Perez had been listed as injured, and Williamson is a true frosh who has hitherto not played. Now, it is possible that Perez got healthy (despite the pre-game injury report that listed him as out), and, given the new redshirt rule, it is possible that they let Williamson get some snaps, especially in light of the fact that Akina is high on him at CB (along with fellow frosh Ethan Bonner).
However, these participation reports often have errors,
especially at away games. (Also, there are sometimes errors due to double-numbering, but no one else has Williamson's #29, and I am fairly sure even an inept score-keeper can differentiate Perez from his #15 number mate, Davis Mills.)
Anyway, as you review the Oregon game film for the fifth time, keep an eye out for these guys.

Changes listed here.
1) Against ND, true frosh DE
Thomas Booker and WR
Michael Wilson played in their fifth game of the season, thus burning their redshirts. I moved both to "First Year" eligibility columns and adjusted numbers accordingly. The reason for the former burn is obvious. I have yet to understand the wisdom of the Wilson burn.
2) Fifth-year senior ILB
Jordan Perez played against both Oregon and ND, so I removed the injury notation. Coaches have talked about the good play of Bobby Okereke, Sean Barton, and Mustafa Branch, full stop.
3) True frosh CB
Kendall Williamson has played against both Oregon and ND. Perhaps the next burn? Is this a recognition of his excellence, or an indictment against Treyjohn Butler?
4) Junior OG/OT
Devery Hamilton played against ND, so I removed the injury notation. Brandon Fanaika continues to get the start at LG.
A few other musings...
- We have not performed very well at the safety position.
- I have been impressed with both Jordan Fox and Gabe Reid.
- I read in another thread someone calling for the replacement of Dylan Jackson at DE. That mystifies me. I think he has been our best DL, though I recognize that the DL as a whole often got pushed around against ND.
- Still flummoxed by the OL situation. Not only is it not our best positional unit, which most of us assumed going into the season, but it is also probably our worst. I suppose this decreases the chance that Nate HeBIG goes pro after this year.

i sure hope Nate comes back next season, cause God knows we're gonna need him.

Changes listed here:
- Bryce Love marked as injured, Trevor Speights as starter. (Interesting commentary on why Speights got the start over Cameron Scarlett, who started against UCD.)
- Kendall Williamson marked as having played his third true frosh game. Two more to shirt burn.
Notes:
- In addition to injured Love, Connor Wedington, and Foster Sarrell, the only non-freshmen non-QB offensive scholarship players who did not play against Utah were Donald Stewart and Drew Dalman.
- Fifth-year senior receiver IBS also did not play, and has yet to see the field this season; someone noted that he may be injured.
- In addition to injured Curtis Robinson, Casey Toohill, Ben Edwards, and Bo Peek, the only non-freshman defensive scholarship player who did not play against Utah was Jordan Perez.
- Junior defensive end Thomas Schaffer also did not play, and has yet to see the field this season; someone noted that he may no longer be on the team, though he is still on the roster.
- Thunder Keck, a sophomore walk-on OLB, did play, and has consistently seen playing time this season.

Just to check, are you saying that the fact Speights got the start is itself an interesting commentary or are you saying that somewhere (on this board?) there is a interesting commentary about the fact that Speights started?

His deficiencies were much discussed last year, and we have some more players at ILB. Still, to go from starter to not playing a snap...

I am curious about this too. From what I have seen, the team plays better with Scarlett in there than with Speights in there. That said, Speights is more of a "home run threat". I think he is sort of regarded as "Bryce Love Light". Unfortunately, that hasn't really translated into production. I do think Speights has improved as a blocker on pass plays. Scarlett probably isn't going to break off many real long runs, but it seems he doesn't get stuffed as much either. I really like his bouncing to the outside in the Ogre package when things were totally plugged up at the LOS. Then again, he has seen that often enough.

Hey CT:
Yeah, I guess I should have been clearer. I meant to say that Speights' start was an interesting commentary on Scarlett, since the latter started against UCD. I am guessing that commentary is that they no longer see Scarlett as our second-best every-down back.

Probably so, which I really don't understand. As I have been saying, it seems to me that they get better results with Scarlett playing, but I can only assume there are reasons to feel otherwise. I would sure like to know more if anybody has insight.

I had guessed as much, but was wondering if there was an interesting commentary written somewhere that I had missed.

Well, so far for 2018 they both have 31 carries. Scarlett for 2.5 yds/carry, Speights for 5.1.
The carries are small enough you have to use them with caution. Speights hits the hole harder and runs tougher, but is not much for patience and finding a hole. I kind of liked how Scarlett looked catching passes out of the backfield last year, but both he (2 catches) and Speights (3 catches) have barely done so this season.

I always hark back to Scarlett against Cal last year. He basically carried like 9 straight times and we beat them back pretty firmly. When you say Speights hits the hole harder, I wonder if that is really so. He is quicker, but Scarlett is heavier. So Speights probably hits quicker. He also has more "home run" potential because of his quickness.
Scarlett is great on the "wheel" route. The problem we have is that we have to hold the back in to block lots of the time. Scarlett has gotten the "short yardage" carries, so that tends to keep his average down. However, if he is allowed to "free lance" like he did against Utah, he can be a reliable back, which is what we need now.

Regarding Jordan Perez, Drew Dalman, and Donald Stewart, I don't know their status. Perez played against Oregon and ND, so I don't know if his absence against Utah was due to re-injury or poor performance or whatever. Dalman played against Oregon - started, in fact - but did not play against ND, so perhaps he is indeed injured. Stewart has not played since UCD, and I don't know why. I wonder if they are redshirting him. And as for Thomas Schaffer and IBS, I also do not know...

Perez hurt.
Dalman is fine.
Stewart passed by Wilson and St Brown.
I tink the press conference is Monday next week with the game on Thrsday so we will know more then.

Thanks so much for this, BK.
- Perez must have gotten re-injured against ND, or in practice for Utah, then.
- I am really surprised that Dalman is healthy and did not see any snaps against Utah. I would have guessed that he would see PT before Dylan Powell or Brian Chaffin given that he has started over both.
- Yes, it seems clear OSB and Michael Wilson are over Stewart on the WR depth chart. Stewart used to play a lot on teams. It seems odd that he does not see the field at all. Again, I wonder if they are redshirting him, trying to rectify (IMO) a mistake in playing him as a true frosh. Then again, he may not be offered a fifth year if he cannot contribute...
Thanks again for the updates.

I think it’s simple Stewart passed by others. We are recruiting very well at WR so don’t see a redshirt in Stewart’s future.
