We have two FBs on scholarship now
However using a TE and three WRs means no FB

Yes, we are using 11 personnel more than we used to, and when we don't we run 12 (1 running back, 2 tight ends).  This is a football-wide phenomenon; NFL teams run 11 on >50% of their snaps.

One solution is to find an H-back like Ryan Hewitt who played fullback but was initially recruited as a tight end.

Jay Symonds sort of fits this bill.

In general due to the shift of our offensive run scheme (duo blocking, more gun runs/RPO looks), a FB is a tell that it's usually a pass, as far as I've seen. Whether the FB is there to pass protect or run a route is another question. Neither of our scholly guys can lead block like Hewitt/Ward/Marx.

That said, we do have a PWO FB/H-back target in the '20 class.

Yeah, the question I have is which came first, the chicken or the egg?

Did our shift away from a lead blocking fullback occur because Symonds and Heimuli aren't good at it, or have we de-emphasized recruiting of fullbacks who are good lead blockers because we changed our scheme.  Or (my preferred hypothesis) are both a result of evolution of the game away from 21 formations at all levels of the game, affecting both the pipeline of fullbacks and our preferred scheme.

I thought someone said that Carberry brought the Duo run (which doesn't use a fullback) from the pros to replace Power, because (at least in part) Stanford opponents were blowing up Power too often by sending someone from the backside while the back was waiting for a hole to open.

I suppose there may be other reasons too. Power is out of style in the pros, where most teams don't use a fullback, while Duo is in.

How about getting this thread talking about more 2021 prospects?

Stanford has yet to offer a QB in the 2021 class to my knowledge.  WTF is taking so long? Most of the top programs already have their QBs committed, let alone offered.

Is Caleb Williams going to be offered?  Is it a "we will only offer if we think he wants to come" situation?

I'm not big on Miller Moss.  He's not a fluid athlete and is so slow and deliberate in his videos.

It also partially answers your question. First semester junior grades are starting to come out.

FWIW Tanner McKee was offered around this time. The only QB staff offered before his junior year was...Jack West. (There’s a reason they don’t do that anymore.)

iirc, West had yet to start in high school when Stanford offered.  that may be the better lesson learned as opposed to the early offer.  

while commendable in principle to stand by offers, offers are also incumbent on recruit showing requisite development/success in the classroom and on the field.  I am not sure if West really met the latter.

If you check him out on 247 sports, he has an offer from every big time school in the land.
It would be a real coup if we could land him.
The Ducks are listed as one of his favorites, even though the Ducks have three scholarship QB's that will be either freshmen or redshirt freshmen this year.

Symonds was recruited as an H-Back / Hewitt type, not a traditional FB. 100 career receptions in HS.

OK so if no Qb in the next class that will leave Mills with one year if he doesn’t dazzle enough to come out plus McKee and West. Given that somebody might will get hurt then SU is in another pickle.

Has anybody watched Shipley’s reel? Lighting. No projections for Stanford and a bunch for the Domers. They haven’t had a back like him for (years, ever)? Runs out of shotgun, the Wildcat, flanks, slots. Electric.

There will be a QB. Staff doesn't want another West so they're over-evaluating (and taking way too long to do so).
