ALANNA SMITH: I would say that, yes, we have experienced shooting trouble. Probably not to the extent that it was like tonight. Usually we'll start off a little not great in the first half and then pick it up in the second, but it persisted the whole game. Honestly, I think the feeling on the team was we weren't worried. We know that we can hit down those shots, and we weren't today, so we had to go to something else. And I think Tara said it, you could just tell that we stayed with things, no matter what our percentage was. No one was freaking out, and I think that was really good on part of everybody on our team because we kept each other accountable, we kept each other in the game.
...
TARA VANDERVEER: That was an absolute root canal. You know, again, I think that there are some real positive things that came out of that. I thought we worked really hard on defense, to hold a team as talented as they are to 46 points, and we've really hung our hat on our defense, and today we actually -- we got on the glass a little bit better. We out-rebounded them, and I have never seen -- I can't ever remember a Stanford team that has struggled so much from the field, not just threes, but lay-ups, you know. And to move on to the Elite 8 with a game like that, I'm so glad that's not our last game because I really believe we're a lot better than that. But it was -- I was not sure what Alanna wasn't worried about. I don't know what game she was at. I mean, wow. We just --we tried a lot of different things. We tried a lot of different people, and we struggled. But it was -- we found a way to win, which is -- this is March, and it's survive and advance.

FWIW, I don't think Tara's remark is unduly harsh. Honestly, if it came out of Geno's mouth, I'd say it was kind of funny, which makes me wonder whether one hears it differently coming from Tara. (And Geno said he had "four and half players" on the floor against UCLA, which many have interpreted as a jab at KLS, who went 1-6 and whom Geno said really, really struggled. "Who'd have thought her play of the game would be on the defensive end?!") I like that Tara is pushing Smith a bit and trying to get under her skin - she should have been worried (and quite frankly, she sure played like she was in the fourth - we actually scored better when Smith was off the floor than on it during the end of the third quarter.)  Now I think Smith is right that we didn't look as absolutely terrified as our Final Four team vs. Texas A&M where I genuinely felt like several of our players were going to have a panic attack on the hardwood, but the last word anyone would use to describe our team last night was "confident."

And did any of you notice that Andy Landers couldn't pronounce DiJonai's name?  I've kind of like Landers in the past, and certainly prefer him as an announcer to the coach who beat us in the sweet 16 in 2013.  But he was given a script to read and didn't have the foggiest idea how to pronounce the name, which tells me he hadn't watched a single Stanford game this year.

As for Landers, yeah, he's a bit of a buffoon. He actually has watched a lot of Stanford games (or at least highlights), because in the studio he's mentioned a number of specific plays/moments from our players this year. To be honest, I think his problem is just that he's an old dude who's used to being the coach - why should he have to bother to learn how to properly pronounce players' names? A lot of people rag on PAC-12 Network coverage, but IMHO, it's way better than ESPN's when it comes to any commentators for women's basketball not name Lobo, Lawson, or LaChina. Last night's were terrible - they made essentially no effort to discuss specific plays or review controversial calls.

I like M T's attitude. To paraphrase Nina Simon, it's a new dawn, it's a new day, let's hope tomorrow our team is feeling good. I don't think we win, but I really, really would like to watch a team I'm proud to have represent LSJU. Last night's game was not that team and was not one to be proud of.

I'm somewhat skeptical about our ability to win this one, but I was skeptical about our ability to beat Oregon the second time, and look what happened.
As Shaw said before the 2012 Oregon football game, it's going to take our best, and perhaps less than their best.

RE: WBB: Stanford 55 Missouri State 46 - jonnyss - 03-31-2019

what's with the hull twins falling to the floor so often?

RE: WBB: Stanford 55 Missouri State 46 - martyup - 03-31-2019

Okay, I've got to get this off my chest before I move on and expunge this game from my memory.  That 4th foul on Smith was BS.  The other player ran in front of a moving Smith and they collided.   Smith was called for charging, but the other girl never established position.  Watch it again and tell me if I'm crazy.  Wait, watch it again and tell me if I'm correct. I agree about the Hull twins falling.  They either fall on a hard screen or fall when a defender pushes off and that leaves a player open.  Plus they fall a lot on rebounds leading to a travel and turnover.  I think it's a strength thing and hopefully they will get stronger in the off-season.  This is why I think Wilson is a better defender.  Don't get me wrong, the Hulls are good defenders with high motors but Wilson fights through screens better.

RE: WBB: Stanford 55 Missouri State 46 - 2006alum - 03-31-2019

I would guess the Hulls' center of gravity is at least 8 inches higher than Wilson's (she seems stronger in the legs), and I bet they weigh the same. All other things being equal, the same amount of contact is likelier to tip them over. Given how slight they seem, I'd actually contend they're remarkably physical. But I agree that they need to bulk up a bit to be elite defenders/rebounders.

As an aside, it's been a joy to watch Wilson blossom late this season. Before all her injuries she was once a top ten recruit in her class. I'm hopeful this is the kick off to an even more impactful senior season.

It didn't help that yesterday's refs were maniacal about calling travel when someone fell down, even if they fell while securing a rebound and didn't move around while on the ground.

I thought she established position but then shuffled her feet slightly that might call it into question.  But When a player runs straight into another player who is standing still and flops, you have to expect the foul.

Alanna's third foul was very questionable.  I thought it should have been on Maya Dodson who was swiping at the ball.  Alanna barely brushed the shooter from behind when Dodson swatted her from the front.  And Alanna gets the foul.

Alanna's second foul she got when trying to block a shot.  Apparently she got arm.

Alanna's first foul she got while rebounding her own miss.  I thought at the time, and continue to think, that she had more right to it than the people around her.

Out of four fouls, 1 seems pretty clear deserved, 2 look to me like 50/50 calls, and 1 looks undeserved.

Maybe if Tara bleached her hair, she'd get as much airtime as CTT, Kim Mulkey, Brenda Frese and, last night, MOST Asst Coach Jackie Stiles... Of course, Tara doesn't gesticulate much, and her face never goes all Brian Kelly.

RE: WBB: Stanford 55 Missouri State 46 - 2006alum - 03-31-2019

Here's the press conference. Tara's comment is at about the 27 minute mark. To me, Tara seemed a little sarcastic and the press was laughing as she was saying she saw a different game than Smith did. In context, it didn't seem very critical.

And here's the press conference for the Elite Eight preview. Begins around the 3 minute mark. There's an amusing interchange between Carrington and one of their media people when Carrington realizes they have Lexie's card out rather than Lacie's.

In a train wreck of a game where neither team can make more than 20% of its shots, the announcers have to troll hard for a storyline. “Cinderella makes it close” was as good as they could get. Every other plot line was really boring, especially to anyone who wasn’t a big fan of either team. It was indeed annoying, but I can’t blame the announcers for trying to add some hype to what was otherwise a prime example of embarrassing offensive ineptitude.

The three things that are really cool for a casual fan to see — Alanna’s versatility, DiJonai on the attack, Kiana’s money threes, were just missing. At least the announcers figured out what a great contribution Anna wilson was making.

I do agree Andy Landers is kind of past his sell-by date. Hard to believe that ESPN couldn't find someone better. But 64-team tournaments are the full employment act for announcing and halftime teams.
