RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-20-2019

Stanford starts on hole #1, which is a par 4 that is playing nearly a stroke over par. In the morning wave of 63 players, there were 24 bogeys and 15 double bogeys (and one triple). Over 25% of the field made 6 or higher. Par is like gaining a shot on the field.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - Hulk01 - 05-20-2019

Key to watching today:
We will fall behind Purdue, Northwestern, and Auburn by or after we've played the first five holes.
The  players today are averaging over two over par over the five hold stretch;
there is no way we won't go plus over that stretch.

But Purdue, Northwestern and Auburn, once they start an hour plus after us,
won't get through those holes without a net plus either.

Key to scoring:
Survive 1-5 and 10-12;
no way we don't net out plus here.

Well we are +4 after the first hole.

2 doubles and a triple to start the day. Now on the cutline. Gotta get through the first six holes with no further damage

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - BostonCard - 05-20-2019

Scores so far on the par 3 third hole:
Mike Lieu +2 5
Ziyi Wang +3 6

ugh

BC

Well, our two playing partners are both +5, while we are at +3.

Well, our ladies have picked up the pace a bit, Even now with Aline -2 and Mika with two birdies to zero out her double.  Lets hope they keep up the play level.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - BostonCard - 05-20-2019

WEll, that's a nice turn of events.  Excluding the drop score (Wang's +7), we are even through 4-7 holes.  That puts us in a tie for 4th five strokes ahead of the cut-line.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-20-2019

Stanford really taking advantage of the par 5s so far. Lee, Valenzuela, Krauter and Liu are -8 on par 5s, +7 on everything else. Currently in 4th at +19.

Golf Channel is reporting from the course even if they are not showing live action until 1 pm. Said that the wind is from a different direction than it has been this week. Team seems to have made adjustments.

Mika bogies 9, but Andrea gets a birdie so we stay -1.

As the final Stanford player Albane Valenzuela makes the turn, here is where we are.

Stanford is part of a scrum of 6 teams competing for the final 4 spots. Thanks to a birdie by Valenzuela on #9, Stanford leads the scrum.
Stanford +22
Arizona +23
Auburn +27
Wake Forest +27
Purdue +28
Northwestern +31

The announcers called 10, 11 and 12 the Bermuda Triangle. And 14 is the hardest hole on the golf course. Let's see how Stanford plays those holes. Your have to avoid big numbers. The leaderboard can change in a hurry when double bogeys are so common.

Stanford has found the back 9 to be tougher all week.
Round 1: +4 on the front, +8 on the back
Round 2: even on the front, +8 on the back
Round 3: -1 on the front, already +5 through 2 holes on the back

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - 2006alum - 05-20-2019

Thanks for the updates and analysis, Spiny! The one thing that gives me some calm is that all of our closest competitors are hitting the course with or after us, so they're all also having to or will have to navigate the same slog. The teams who are finished are all well below us, so the cutline will almost certainly get higher as the afternoon progresses.

Yelp!  4 players have completed 10 and 11.  We have five bogeys and a triple.

Not necessarily, 2006alum. The teams below Stanford (Auburn, Wake, Northwestern, Purdue) all started on the back 9. They have yet to play the front 9 which has three par 5s. More birdie chances.

Looks like the severe weather is going to pass north of Fayetteville. Odds appear good that teams will be able to complete the round today.

Oh dang. Retracted! I just looked at the hole progress and didn't notice if it was front or back. :O

Of the teams that have finished so far:
Illinois: +12 on the front, +13 on the back
Florida: +7 on the front, +10 on the back
FSU: +4 in the front, +16 on the back
Virginia: +9 in the front, +10 in the back
Kent State: +7 in the front, +4 in the back

Point is that most teams are doing worse in the back 9 than in the front nine.

Usually reliable 2 time All-American Andrea Lee has really struggled lately. She participated in the Augusta National Women's Amateur at the start of April and made the cut on the line before closing with a 76 to finish 17 shots behind the winner Jennifer Kupcho. She never got much going at the Pac 12s but still managed to finish 8th. And 2 weeks ago at regionals, she had her worst placing of the year, 27th. Now at the most important tournament of the year when her team needs her most, she has shot 77-75 and just bogeyed 10, 11 and 12.

Stanford has creeped back to the cut line.
Arizona +24
Stanford +28
Northwestern +28
Auburn +29
Wake Forest +30
Purdue +30

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - Viking_Guy - 05-20-2019

And doubled 13.  She's lost five strokes to par in 4 holes.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - oldalum - 05-20-2019

We were -1 on the front nine; we've lost 9 strokes on the back half so far (5 from Lee alone). Still a 4-stroke cushion to the cut line but our competitors have yet to play 6-9. Valenzuela, Krauter, and Liu are keeping us alive. We need someone to get hot.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-20-2019

Play has been suspended because of thunderstorms in the area, though the sun is still out. I can see shadows on the golf course. Stanford players have 3 to 6 holes remaining.

Team standings for positions 5 to 8:
5. Arizona +25
6. Stanford +28
7. Wake Forest +31
8. Auburn +32
9. Purdue +33
9. Northwestern +33
