Despite a rough last two days, it appears that team is still going to be fine as far as making the Top 8,
and has even jumped TX A&M for sixth place.

It wasn't pretty at all (could I posit it was the equivalent of our fourth quarter against ASU this year
in terms of running out the clock :) ), but making the Top 8 in either the 6th or 7th position as the #10 overall 
seed would have been solid/great coming into the week.

And SMU birdies to jump into Top 8. Unbelievable.

Cal two off the pace, but with the mistakes we have seen today, who knows?

Ouch, SMU's #1 guy just missed a 3-footer that would have sent Clemson home.  Now headed for a playoff.

To be fair, SMU also had a guy triple-bogey and another double-bogey on the last hole.

We officially finish in 6th position, setting up a matchup with #3 seed Wake Forest. Vandy and A&M
are also on our side of the bracket for match play for a potential semifinal matchup.

Cal misses the playoff with SMU and Clemson by 1 shot. Lol.

Playing in summer Arkansas humidity is worlds different than Mediterranean-climated California. When Cal misses by one stroke, it's not hard to think somewhere along the way discomfort, jet lag, and/or lack of familiarity with the climate caused a tiny mental lapse. That's all it takes.

One trend I've noticed recently is that very few national championships are hosted out West these days, and I do think it makes a difference to have home geographic turf advantage, especially for sports played outside. 

Congrats to our guys for representing literally the rest of the country in match play.

This is great analysis, but to consider things from the macro, sports-wide perspective, as opposed to the micro, men's golf-specific perspective,
I just keep wondering when I see the Pac struggle to place teams in the CFP, the Pac struggle to place teams in the NCAA men's basketball tournament, the Pac, until the super-regional round throughout the season, fall behind the SEC and possibly even the Big 12 in softball (a sport we had dominated until 2010-2011), and have as many regional hosts and fewer tournament teams as compared to the Big 10 etc.

The issues feel systemic across sports, and seem to boil down to the usual points of returned revenue to the schools, conference-wide fan interest etc.

Would be interested in your opinions of the matchups. Seems favorable to us that their best-performing player in NCAA stroke play, Detmer (who is curiously their #5 player) is matched up against our worst (Snyder).

Survive & advance. If you'd told me at the beginning of the season they'd make the match play round at nationals, I'd have taken it in a heartbeat. Everyone still left has a chance at the title. Match play is a weird thing, and a great thing. You just never know. Except maybe this year. Okie State should run away with this thing.

I'd be startled to see Oklahoma State lose,
but Cal's 2013 team has prepared me for it.

That year, Cal has four players who averaged
under 71 strokes per round;
those four ranked first, 11th, 12th, and 13th in the country.
The team won 13 of its fifteen tournaments.

And didn't make the match play finals.

Lost 3-2 in the semis to Illinois,
who in turn lost 4-1 to Alabama in the final.
