Next 7 are 3 in Milwaukee. 4 in Colorado. Including a DH. Heck, Pablo may pitch in game 2. If, as I suspect they go 2-5 or 1-6, the talk of “contending” ends.
Smith should be traded. He is at peak value. And a top flight closer on a second division team is wasted.
Now if I’m wrong and they go 6-1........

The Giants are entering a never before seen situation.
Usually by this time a team knows what it is and if it will be a buyer or seller at the trade deadline. When a seller, the value a trade can extract is pretty much determined by the quality of and how many suitors a team can find for its given trade assets. More demand equals higher price.
In the current case, with the Giants just 4.5 GB of wild card, and playing the best ball they have all season, the Giants are threatening to pass teams that might want their players. So the Giants not only have some valuable trade assets, they also get to drive up their asking price by adding a “buy us out of contending for a wild card spot with your team” premium to their demands.
There could be 8 NL teams who want Giants assets and are also feeling threatened by how well the Giants are now playing. It’s a fascinating dynamic I’ve never seen before. And by definition, if these NL teams want to ‘buy out” the Giants, that will drive up the prices for AL teams.
It’s all made even more interesting by the hard trade deadline in 18 days. My guess is Farhan won’t make any moves until that day because he has to push teams to their absolute limit. But in the end he doesn’t have to do anything if the Giants continue playing well enough to stay within 5 games of a wild card spot.
The winner of every negotiation must be willing to walk away. The Giants may not have the overwhelming talent/player control to trade for a prospect haul, but they very well could have the leverage.

Trading guys at this point is all about who you can get. They need people ready to play right now. Screw tanking and screw getting an organizations fourth or fifth prospect. If Bum deals in that bandbox and throttles the Brewers tonight go for it and play to win now. I don’t GAS about three years from now, I’m too old.

Three interesting items.
1. Giants just went ahead against the Brewers, 2-1. Stanford's own Austin Slater hit a hard double into the gap to drive in Longoria. The Fox announcer (not sure who it is) says Slater reminds him of J. D. Martinez. Says last year he looked like a 1980s hitter, continually hitting down on the ball. Says he completely retooled his swing. Later had a two out single to keep a drive alive, then ran around to tie the score, 4-4. Slater now hitting .450, OPS of 1.650.
2. The Brewers went for a reliever against Panik, double switch to bring in lefty reliever. Hall-of-Fame-bound manager Bochy counters with Solarte (hitting .289, over 40% better than Panik). Solarte gets a single, leading to Slater. This is why Bochy (among many other moves) deserves Cooperstown.
3. Brought in Watson for the 7th, and Dyson for the 8th. Spanked, gave up three runs. Moronta had a shaky 9th. 5-4 loss, and chalk it up to the Giants' shaky bullpen.

The Giants lead the majors in HRs in July with 18. There are a host of teams with 16 and 17, but...who knew?
Also #2 in runs scored in July so far.
8-3 win today, record is 43-49. Giants are 4.5 back of the Phillies for the wild card, just four in the loss column.
Slater went 0-3 with three strikeouts. First hiccup at the major league level.

To be fair, Slater was out of the starting lineup because he had a fever. But Longoria got hurt and Bochy had to switch around some players, inserting Slater in right. Bad time to get sick - today, the outfielders are 8 for 12 after 6 innings as the Giants are benefitting from playing at altitude.
