We close the half on an 11-0 run. We lead at the half 35-18. That run was keyed by two Jump and one Jones treys.
Our defense is far more effective tonight. I'm not sure quite how to describe it. It is supposedly a man, but one of the Hulls is always at the top of the key switching right or left as Syracuse runs its back and forth motion plays--so the Hull is in more of a zone. It seems to be effective. Syracuse shot a pathetic 16% for the half.
On offense, Fingall has been a revelation. She has been effective inside and with mid range jumpers. Hannah Jump leads the team, however, with 4 treys. She also had a couple of very good defensive plays. Given that Syracuse plays the zone, I think Jump may get a lot of minutes. She is 4/7.
Halftime interview (recorded) was with Jump. Who does she aspire to be like? Karlie Samuelson (of course.) But I think Jump is shooting better than Karlie did as a freshman! She is articulate, modest, and just sounds like a great kid.
Some more halftime stats. Syracuse loves to steal the ball. Stanford has 6 steals, Syracuse 3.
They are 6/6 from the free throw line or the margin would be even greater. Williams, Lexie, Prechtel, and Belibi all have 2 fouls.
Can we keep this up for another half?

We are 4-7 on free throws. Not a good stat.
Jump with 5 3s!
We are up 43-25 with 5 min remaining in the 3rd. Belibi with 3 fouls. Lexie has 2 fouls.

No field goals in last 7 minutes. Syracuse strategy to foul us? Maybe smart
Down to 11 pts lead

Syracuse did heat up its shooting in the 3rd quarter, and outscored us 22-16. After three quarters Stanford 51 Syracuse 40. More than half of our 16 points came on free throws--the Syracuse zone is finally giving our offense real trouble. So our 24 point lead had been sharply reduced.

51-40 at the end of the 3rd. Our offense disappeared in the 3rd. We need to get back on track. The Cuse is heating up.

Does it seem like all our games feature opponents shooting 90% on FTs and we shoot 60%?

77-59 is the final. Big win for the Cardinal. Hard to believe this team almost lost to Cal Baptist.

We win 77-59. Credit Jump with 8 of 13 three point shots for the offense we needed to break down this difficult 2-3 zone. Without her it might have been a different story. But don't forget Haley Jones who went off for 19 points and seemed to come of age. And Nadia Fingall with 10 points and 13 rebounds looked like a different person tonight, despite taking a spill and visiting the locker room. She played 26 minutes which is by far the most this year. Lexie was off tonight, going 1/5 so we needed offense from elsewhere.
Our defense was suffocating in the first half, but let up a bit in the second, winding up with 25% shooting for the game.
The officiating was awful, with lots of phantom fouls on both sides. We had 23 and they had 18. We shot 16/24 of our free throws.
On the +/= Jones, Fingall, Jump, and Williams were all highly positive with Fingall at the top.
We had only 20 points in the paint--has to be a season low for us. That zone was effective at keeping us away from the basket.
We had 11 steals to their 7. They are not used to that. For the most part we dealt with their full court press fairly well.
It is wonderful to see a good quality, all around effort and win against a quality opponent. Gonzaga and Buffalo and CBU had me worried. Tonight we saw the coming of age of Jump and Jones and saw the team show resilience after a lackluster effort last night.
Now, on to Mississippi State, which is a whole other kettle of fish.

We have our zone buster and her name is Jump. Really good game from Jones and Fingall has had 2 really good games in a row. Plus the Hulls played some strong defense. So odd that we can win with not much offense from Williams and Lexie, but that's because we have a lot of depth on that bench that can score in different ways.

The audio broadcaster was terrible. He finished his broadcast by saying that Stanford was 7-1 on the season. I don't know if he mistakenly included the loss to the USA team, but if you include that game then you should include the game against the Chinese team. He was often lost and confused.

Were you listening to the broadcaster on the video feed or the Stanford broadcaster on the Stanford audio channel? Kevin Danna seems competent to me. I turned the volume off on the livefeed and opened Kevin Danna in a separate window. His call is always about 4 seconds ahead of the video which I don't mine.
Two Stanford women have had 9 three point games: Yamasaki and Goodenbour.
The most recent to have an 8 trey game was Bonnie Samuelson in 2015. Wiggins and Yamasaki also had 8 trey games.
Anna Wilson had a 7 trey game against Ohio State a couple of years ago. For all of her prowess, Karlie never had even a 7 trey game, so Hannah Jump just gained herself a spot on the all-time list with her 8 trey performance, and exceeded her idol's one game record.
Congratulations Hannah Jump!

It was the audio feed from the GoStanford WBB page. It's Tunein. I didn't catch his name.

I thought he was fine, though he made a few slips, mostly saying the wrong team name. I didn't catch the 7-1 reference, though. That would be a booboo all right.

Yes, that is Kevin Danna, an employee of Stanford Athletics who does all our audio broadcasts. I didn't catch the 7-1 gaffe. He talked quite a bit about his time at Syracuse, that stopped just short of being annoying.
