Absolutely. According to Coach Shaw "we have depth for these kinds of situations" and "our recruiting has been excellent" (both a direct quotes)
Shaw legitimately believes walk-ons and freshmen are depth. This isn't me being snarky. He actually thinks that.
RE: recruiting seniors -

Coach Shaw, in his conversation with Rivals, appears to imply both Walker Little and Devery Hamilton
will be returning next year. As such, it seems the issues with recruiting seniors appears to be a mostly
defense problem.

Malik Antoine just announced on Twitter that he is returning next season,
so the Card get a fifth year returner on defense after the departures
of Williams, Eboh and Swann.

#21-ranked MBA according to USNWR. Not bad. Hope it works out for him.
RE: recruiting seniors -

Very smart and logical choice for Dylan. IU is on the up, in need of interior OL since their starting G and C graduate, and the MBA is quite good ESPECIALLY in the Midwest area (he's from near St. Louis). And if he gets a 6th year, which he's applying for according to a 247 article, he'll get it fully paid for. Nice.

At the risk of some thread drift, I have a few questions. Does anybody recall a football player that was enrolled in the GSB while playing football? Ditto for the Law School and Med School? I don't remember any, but I must admit I haven't looked for this previously. I would assume it has happened at some point, but I don't recall it.

I think Bill McColl was in med school part time while he was playing for the Chicago Bears.
RE: recruiting seniors -

McColl became a Dr while playing for the Bears. So yes in med school.
RE: recruiting seniors -
OutsiderFan - 12-07-2019
In Powell's case, he was more than likely not going to be a starter in 2020, so even if he was accepted to Stanford Business, if he wanted to also be a starting Guard in his final year of eligibility, it likely wasn't happening at Stanford.
The OL will be quite deep in 2020. There might be so much depth that Stanford could conceivably rotate OL to keep them fresh and wear down defenses, or return to some 6 and 7 OL sets.

Co-signed. He seems to have a defensive mentality on the field. And he has DE size.

Yep, 6'4" 270 I believe. And it's not like we're using him that well on O anyways. Everyone knows it's a run when he's in, and the couple swing/screen passes he's caught have generally been meh. Just put another OL out there, or since Trey Stratford lost so much weight just teach him how to catch a ball and convert him. :)

Sure why not. Given that I had given up on Stratford seeing the field in a Stanford uniform, if he can contribute on D, that would be a positive.
On TE, I suppose a lot depends on what happens with Párkinson next year. If he’s back, agree on moving Fisk to defense. Cotton made the move. It wasn’t an overwhelming success, but he added depth at a position of need. But if Párkinson leaves, it’s not like we have a ton of depth at TE; Harrington, Archer and the frosh coming in, none of them proven.

I think it probably depends a lot on what Fisk wants to do. For some reason, I have the impression he prefers offense, but I don't have anything to back it up.

Not taking one in '18 hurts. You can kind of argue that whole class will affect us for multiple years too:
- No TE
- Only 1 OL who has been hurt his entire career here
- Only 1 RB (despite Heimuli-Lund's departure and Wedington moving to WR) who probably won't contribute...especially if we land EJ Smith
- Only 3 DBs (despite being very thin there and only taking 2 in the previous class), 2 of whom probably won't contribute due to frequent injury (Bonner) or being passed up by true frosh walk-ons on STs (Logan)
- Only 1 DL (assuming Fox stays at OLB), who didn't RS so only has 2 eligible years left. Only taking 1 again in '19 will prove to be the real killer here. Needed more in at least one of those two classes, if not both.
- A QB who we offered too early (at age 15!!!) who didn't develop much in HS...we saw what happened when he played. Rumor has it he's the reason we're waiting so long to offer QBs now, including '21 (but there is a short list and I think/hope an offer is coming soon after HS playoffs finish).
- A scholarship FB not even in the same universe as previous wrecking balls Daniel Marx and Ryan Hewitt. It's one thing to get a scholarship FB who's clearly a beast, but it's another to...uh...not. Two years in a row. I think staff has learned.
Having a couple holes/whiffs in a large class is expected and not usually a big deal. But when it's over half the class of just 14 guys and you don't have the depth to support it? Massive yikes.

LB Kurt Colehower received his BA in Communications and his Master's in Sociology from Stanford, and he may have begun it as a fifth year senior during his last year of football.

After giving people time to respond, it appears that nobody has gone to Law School, Med School, or the GSB as a "5th year" student while also playing football at Stanford, at least that anybody here is aware. Bill McColl did attend medical school, but he was playing professionally at the time. It would seem that what Dylan Powell is doing has never happened at Stanford.
The four year eligibility for football came into effect in the 1972-73 season. Before that, you only had three years of eligibility and had to play "freshman football". From that time forward, it would at least theoretically possible to red-shirt and also play four years of football. I would like to expand my original question a bit. It appears that at least Kurt Colehower got a masters while playing football. I am pretty sure there are others. I would appreciate others chiming in with names or guys who got an advanced degree while playing football and receiving a football scholarship.
What I am trying to determine here is how viable an option is it to actually do this at Stanford. I know this "poll" approach is a bit unscientific, but I have no other way to determine how common this may be. If it is quite uncommon, that would just add another reason to look elsewhere during a 5th year. I am sure plenty of guys need the 5th year just to manage the extra load of football coupled with academics. I am also sure some guys just want an "easy" last year for whatever reason. However, I would imagine that most guys who are 1) qualified to graduate, 2) not trying to improve their NFL draft position, and 3) intend to receive a football scholarship and play during their 5th year want to actually accomplish a tangible goal, like get an MA/MS. If that is so hard to do that few attempt it, that will also cause people to look elsewhere.

on Colehower, the alumni database shows him enrolling in the fall of '83 (nominally the class of '87 which is his "social class") and getting his bachelors in '88 and his masters in '89 so it looks like the masters was completed the year after his football career
the database shows Brennan Scarlett getting his masters (mgmt science and engineering) in '16 so it appears he completed that work in the year he played football for us
I'm sure there are others
