I advocate the deprofessionalization of college sports (not that this will happen), but I advocate fewer games (less chance of injury for players), playing at times that fit best with players and in person fans (rather than better for television), fewer bowl games, eliminating conference championships and the college football playoff (basically returining to when most teams played 11 regular season games and a handful of teams played a bowl game, instead of the scenario now some teams can play 15 games in a season - 12 regular season games, a conference championship, a national semifinal and the national championship).  I favor determining a champion or multiple champions by vote, etc.  Basically, I advocate for taking a lot of the money out of college sports (football and basketball) and making them generally more athlete-centric and less important in the zeitgeist.  Obviously, I might as well wish for unicorns and the fountain of youth, but I would prefer that the hashtag #itshouldmeanless be trending.  Once that happens, coaching salaries will fall.

Otherwise, I'm kind of with lsju here; what you are proposing sounds like collusion/illegal employment action.  I suppose you could imagine legislation limiting salaries in schools that take federal grants (so all of them), but I almost wonder if some SEC teams would actually think about whether to turn down federal grants.

That being said, universities have bigger issues right now than college coach salaries.  At least those don't have any national security implications.

I think some kind of coaching salary cap, while appealing to probably a great majority of college administrators, will only happen if fans get tired of stories like that of Tucker. It would be a legal headache to try to impose, but, more than that, I think fans have been bamboozled into thinking that a coach like Nick Saban ($8.9M in 2019) is really ten+ times better than a coach like Rocky Long ($880k in 2019).

No disrespect to Coach O at LSU, I think that team's run this past year shows that a head coach does not have to walk on water to reach the top of the mountain.

Good cases can be made Saban is still underpaid given what Alabama rakes in from football under his leadership. The recruiting, player development, and coaching he bring is one thing, but he clearly knows how to handle the spotlight microscope he is under and prepares his players for it as well. And somehow he keeps his players graduating at a certain level even in that environment.

It’s the entire cost structure in pro college sports that is the issue and must be addressed.

Ugh. Perhaps the Pac-12 should move it's hq to the Palouse--probably the lowest cost of living in the conference.

Maybe not in the majority of Cardboard Stanfordsportaholics but I only watch an occasional football or hoops game on the Network. Olympic sports only thrill the masses in an Olympic year if then.

Normally I would say that Steve Sarkisian's declaration that he plans to return to Alabama means that he will not be coaching in Colorado next year:

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/28744795/sources-steve-sarkisian-withdraws-colorado-consideration-staying-alabama

But of course, if we've learned anything from this fiasco, it is that one should not believe anything a coach says in denying interest in a job, until that job is filled with someone else.

And maybe not even then. Preemptive tarmac dismissals before spring practice starts cannot be ruled out.

Or resume embellishments.  Anyone know what O'Leary is doing these days?

Well, normally a coach stating that he has "withdrawn his name from consideration of job X" means that X has informed him that he is no longer in the running for the job.
I don't think that is quite what Tucker said.

As far as I can tell, O'Leary retired after "resigning" from UCF midway through the 2015 season. He's 73 now.

So, in his two head coaching gigs, he finished up at Ga Tech immediately after beating us in the Seattle Bowl, and ended his career at UCF a few games after losing to us in the game Bryce Love scored his first long distance TD.

He’s a consultant. Works with HS kids to help them write their College applications.....  :)

Karl Dorrell to be named next Buffs coach

I'm sure Colorado fans are thrilled...

RE: Today in opponent coaching attrition - oldalum - 02-22-2020

Wow. Derek Mason hired him at Vandy as offensive coordinator; he was terrible and was kicked out the door after 1 season.

But a good hire from our standpoint!

RE: Today in opponent coaching attrition - SamuelMcF - 02-22-2020

Wasn't son Chandler committed to Stanford at some point?

RE: Today in opponent coaching attrition - fullmetal - 02-25-2020

Chandler transferred to Vandy after his freshman year at Stanford:
