The Terry Rule occurred to me but I find what Mick reported fascinating and will be looking for more info. It can pretty well be argued that Republican office seekers/holders have played a Southern Strategy ever since Goldwater and certainly since Kevin Phillips (author of The Emerging Republican Majority) was a consultant in the Nixon admin.

Oof. Just the subheading is a brutal read:

Well, let me bring it back.  Because of the miserable performance of our elected officials during the COVID-19 pandemic and given our Federal underinvestment in health care (encompassing everything including the CDC), I fully believe that some form of universal health care will be enacted by the new President.  That President will be reacting to the wishes of the Progressive arm of his party and it will be fully encouraged by the media elite who will then support the new Vice President and her plan when she rolls out Medicare For All (or its equivalent).

I would be very comfortable placing a bet that even if the political will in charge of the federal government is very solidly behind a Medicare-for-All system come January 2021, such a system will not fully be in place until long after COVID-19 recedes from the top of our concerns, and probably not until closer to 2030. There are insane complexities in integrating 50 distinct healthcare systems and abolishing private insurance schemes, and I can't imagine anything less than a 5-10 year transition window. And if you thought the ACA produced lawsuits, just wait. 

My view is that if one wants to universalize health insurance coverage in the U.S., the better immediate-term approach is big cash grants to the states that want to use their "laboratories of democracy" to get a public option off the ground first. That is the only way to meaningfully improve healthcare coverage for citizens any time soon. Use that to buy time for a federal public option/Medicare-for-All-Who-Want-It system to be implemented in a half decade. Then reassess.

I will not say any more in deference to the Terry Rule and have tried to keep this relatively non-partisan. :)

But Americans don’t care what foreigners think of them. They can stuff it.
