Bring me more defensive linemen!

Lonergan, great name. The Robert Shaw character in "The Sting." If he is warm blooded and NOT injury prone go get him. But get a second guy too and NO MORE LDS QB's.

RE: Class of 2023 - TrumpCard - 11-12-2021

Stanford doesn't have a competent backup QB right now because Shaw decided not to offer a QB in the 2019 class until 2 months before signing day.  If Ryan Hilinski were on the team right now, he'd be playing over West or Patu and none of us would be freaking out.  Even though Hilinski hasn't been an all-conference type player for NW, he's competent.

The same problem, to a lesser extent, arose in the 2017 season.  I say to a lesser extent because things wouldn't actually have been that much better if Shaw had offered and landed Wimbush early in the 2015 cycle, but it was still an unforced error to take zero QBs in the 2015 class.

The solution going forward isn't to recruit a whole bunch of QBs and hope some of them will be good.  The mere act of taking two QBs in a class makes it more difficult to recruit top QBs (and more likely that Shaw will end up with two mediocre recruits).  In the era of NIL money, that's even more true.  And considering that Stanford's football team sucks right now, it'll be tough enough to recruit one good QB without a self-imposed handicap.

The solution is for Shaw to focus on the best QB he can get each year, and to take ONE QB EVERY SINGLE YEAR, without exception.

Responding to Boston Card, I'm not sure that Lonergan is pro-style.  This article indicates that he can run the read option too:  https://www.onlineathens.com/story/sports/college/bulldogs-extra/2021/05/19/uga-football-recruiting-brookwood-dylan-lonergan/5094741001/.

Based on the article, the bigger issue is that he's a Top 20 baseball prospect and could easily choose to play baseball instead of football in college (or, in theory, just go pro immediately in baseball).

RE: Class of 2023 - slide - 11-12-2021

Lonergan has mentioned a few times about wanting to play both sports in college.  we've had some luck with two-way players with Brock Jones being the latest.

RE: Class of 2023 - TrumpCard - 11-12-2021

Borchard and Hutchinson both left early to play baseball. It’s more lucrative and doesn’t have the CTE risk. As Hoffpauir would attest if he were alive. For someone who actually can play pro ball in either sport, it doesn’t seem that close a call.

RE: Class of 2023 - BobK - 11-12-2021

Elway, Cook and Lynch choose FB
Gaffney choose both

RE: Class of 2023 - Phogge - 11-13-2021

This isn’t 1982 anymore Bobbbbb. Nor is it 2013.

Lonergan, if he’s that good, should play baseball. Stanford can’t keep their QB’s healthy because they have a high school O line. Why risk your neck with this bunch.

As did recent HoF inductee Toby Gerhart.

Before anyone asks, I don't think anybody has a clue.

I’m thinking not Stanford, though.

Well 4 of those schools have or will have new unproved head coaches

And one school may have some recruiting issues of note that would give cause to consider one's choice.

I agree. ASU's 2021 recruiting class was #8 in the conference, #52 nationally. And the 2022 recruiting class is currently dead last in the conference, #92 nationally. Yikes!

ASU already has 3 transfer commitments.
TE from Penn State
LB from Mississippi State
S from Illinois

ASU is a special case but this is indicative of how recruiting rankings (which only consider high school recruits) are increasingly misleading in the transfer era. There are a number of programs that are taking the approach that if they can't get their top targets at a position they would rather save those scholarships for transfers than resort to a Plan B. Schools that go transfer-heavy are going to look bad in the rankings next Wednesday even though they have real talent coming in soon via the portal; schools that don't bring in transfers (hmmm) will be overrated to a degree.

ASU has already lost six players to the transfer portal, including a 4-star RB, 4-star EDGE and 4-star CB. Plus they are under investigation for a recruiting scandal.

Double yikes!

So let's take a closer look at who is coming in via the transfer portal to ASU:

Messiah Swinson, TE from Missouri. Last year, for Missouri, he had 5 receptions for 46 yds, 0 TDs. Maybe he's a great blocker. But it's ironic to me that Messiah is playing for the Devils.

Rodney Groce, Jr., LB from Mississippi State. I don't think he played as a freshman. He was a 3-star coming out of HS.

Derrick Smith, S from Miami and then Illinois. Played in 15 games with four starts in the last two seasons. In 2021 had 17 total tackles, 10 unassisted. No interceptions, no passes defended.

To be fair, a lot can and will happen between now and September 2022--there are rumors that ASU might lose its offensive coordinator to Auburn--but I say, at the moment, ASU is indeed a special case, as it gets a triple yikes!
