I'm sure some of y'all thought I was crazy when a few weeks ago I posted how we would be seeing daily 150k cases a day in a few weeks. I wonder if we'll get to 200k in a day. It seems possible, especially with a sore loser vindictive POTUS who is going to want the country to suffer after dealing him a defeat.

It isn't up to him. He isn't forcing us to do stupid things. Stay home as much as you can. Social distance when you leave home, and wear a mask when not at home. Not perfect. Won't wipe out the disease. But it will get us back into "reasonable" case numbers. Trump can't force us not to do those things. It is our choice. Always has been.

He could fire Fauci. Hinted at it before the election. He could derail vaccine efforts somehow. He can still do plenty of damage.

Unfortunately, he could do those things. Firing Fauci would be totally without cause, but he could do it. Derailing vaccine efforts would be somewhat harder, but he certainly could make it more difficult for the developers. He can still do lots of damage, but what he can't do is force the body politic to behave stupidly. That is up to "us". Unfortunately, the direction the case count is going kind of indicates we aren't doing enough. I also get the impression that lots of people just don't care anymore. This COVID-19 stuff is just too inconvenient for them. I hope I am wrong.

I wouldn't be surprised if every day more people stop caring than start caring.   Or rather,  care less than care more.  Fatigue is real.  =(

I now understand that too many citizens in the USA refuse to incorporate information from other places.   The European curves had similar changes 2-4 weeks ago.   Want to know where we are going?   Just look at where Europe has been?   I feel a bit like Mater from the Pixar/Disney "Cars", but it applies here.

RE: We're #1 !!! - BostonCard - 11-07-2020

Yes... same here in California.  We are behind the rest of the country, and for now case counts are reasonable but rising, and one can reasonably project that things will accelerate quickly in a couple weeks.

Quote:A total of 715k cases were reported last week. This means that 1 in every 462 people in the US tested positive for COVID-19 last week. Hosp. are also spiking in all regions, and are now close to the totals we saw in the spring and summer surges.

The 7-day average was over 100,000 cases.  As noted, hospitalizations are close to the totals we saw at earlier peaks; the problem is that cases are still rising, and hospitalizations trail new diagnoses.  I expect we will hit records of hospitalizations next week.

Deaths are still low, but rising and they trail cases and hospitalizations.

Lots of crowd gathering today. Seems to be mostly masked but plenty of non existent social distancing.   Hope there was a strong breeze.

RE: We're #1 !!! - BostonCard - 11-07-2020

I’m thinking there shouldn’t be an inauguration (in a traditional sense).  The risk of COVID spread is too high.

At the first two peaks, the 7 day average was at about 32k and 70k. Now we have reached 107k  (according to worldometers.info) and there's no reason to believe we have peaked.

Now that the elections are over, can we all just wear masks and not do stupid stuff?

No greater than motorcycle rallies or BLM rallies or . . . post ND-Clemson game celebrations by exuberant fan base who don't give a $hit about Covid.  And I'm trying to figure out if I blame them - they'll all be fine, they have their lifetime memory . . . even if there are some ND cancellations in the coming weeks.

Fortunately most inauguration days are so cold in DC that people are bundled up in scarves and masks anyway. And the outdoor stuff, with more social distancing protocols, should be fine. The inaugural balls, etc., will have to go by the wayside, however. And probably for the better anyway...

The problem with the inauguration's outdoor events will be that even if people are outside, they are often outside packed tightly in the same location for hours.  It would be better than sitting in a packed indoor concert, but still a bit too risky for an administration that has pledged to use science to get control of COVID.  If the collection of MAGA rallies during the election season lead to 700 deaths then packing a million people into a few outdoor areas in DC feels like it would lead to quite a few deaths.

If that infamous outdoor parade in Philadelphia is shown as Exhibit A for the dangers of large gatherings for the Spanish Flu, my guess is the Biden administration will not want the Biden Inauguration to become the equivalent for COVID19.

For those unfamiliar with the logistics it is not just the time at the inauguration.   Attendees would also need to take some combination of planes, trains and buses to travel to DC.

Hard to imagine a COVID task force worried about the rate of spread would support inauguration activities and the related transportation logistics.   Given Biden will have a COVID task force before he has even announced his cabinet, my assumption is the inauguration activities will have far fewer people.

Not as confident about the fate of the balls, since it could be possible to test everyone (24 hours before and then again at the secret service screening gates).   For most normal events that level of testing would be too much of a burden, but those inauguration balls are rather important to the political machinery.

Would have to agree.  And I hope the new administration strongly encourages safe and healthy behaviors.

I also agree that we should not have a "traditional" inauguration. Just having a swearing in with minimal attendees will also gloss over the fact Trump undoubtedly will not attend.

I also believe that the celebrations in response to Biden's election are very ill advised. Even if they are "safer than ...<name your activity>", they are not safer than staying home. It seems that  we have a country that believes that if you do the "right thing" 95% of the time, that is enough and you are entitled to do whatever you want the remaining 5% of the time. It doesn't work like that.

RE: We're #1 !!! - BostonCard - 11-08-2020

Agree with Goose.  In addition to the actual risk of the event, there is the message that it sends.  A traditional inauguration sends the message that the social distancing rules are only there when convenient and can be ignored when inconvenient.

As Mick notes, you have to model the behaviors you want the public to follow.

RE: We're #1 !!! - oregontim - 11-08-2020

I'm hoping Biden makes a safe and cautious inauguration ceremony a visible part of strong, coordinated messaging of national unity and common sense to control the pandemic. Yes, of course it's months late, but the numbers keep getting worse, so better late than never. Let the constrained inauguration ceremony stand as a symbol of a new national effort.

Don't worry, I'm sure the MSM will be all over it to figure out exactly how many additional infections have been caused by these celebrations, like we saw with certain other unwise gatherings . . . oh wait . . . nevermind.
