Cart way before the horse there. Lots of milestones that haven't been met:
- Punch a ticket to the Big Dance at least 2-3 years in a row
- Content for a conference title
- Make the Sweet Sixteen
Indications are positive, but calling Stanford a basketball school is a lot like giving Obama the Nobel Peace Prize in his first year in office.
Thinking the same thing, especially before a game with UNC, a team we've never beaten.

Was anyone else at the UNC game at Maples in December, 1983? The championship game of the Stanford Invitational if I recall correctly. Maples was sold out as everyone wanted to watch UNC's junior phenom Michael Jordan. He scored 4 points and fouled out. The Tar Heels did not need him. They also had Sam Perkins, Brad Daugherty and Kenny Smith and won 88-75. It was still thrilling to feel the energy in Maples from a full house.

I was there, Jerry Hobbie and mock TD signals and all.

It might be wise to pump the breaks a bit after one game. It seems reasonable to assert the 20-21 version is the most physically impressive and best Stanford defensive team in a long time. Williams did have an impressive initial outing as a Frosh, and the scoring was evenly distributed as well.
But what happens if UNC makes Williams a focal point, he goes 0-7 from 3pt range and shots 3-11 overall? Does he have the moxie to get to the FT line 8 times and make at least 6? Will he cut down on his 6 turnovers?
Cal fans are usually the ones who are way over their skis predicting glory. Stanford fans are much more circumspect in my experience.

Same. Never had the sense Stanford had a chance in that one. Hope (and dare I say it, expect?) to NOT have that same feeling today. We'll see.
P.S. On alternate timeline, my #1 remains that Emeka Okafor resists BS pressure from Calhoun and signs with Stanford after Collins scholarship is formally available . . . and Stanford goes on to win 2 NCAA titles (the latter would have been a given had Okafor worn Cardinal uni). That's my story, and I'm sticking with it!

JJJ - Jerry Hobbie, now that's a blast from the past. The Stanford fans just loved his game. We cheered for every good thing he did on the court and chanted his name. All this for a Fordham player! If I remember correctly, Stanford fans carried him off the court after the 3rd place game vs. San Jose St. Hobbie is now on staff at UW.

My declaration was also I guess a too thinly veiled comment on the state of the football program.
Schools tend to be one or the other. For a variety of reasons, it's hard to be great at both at the same time. UF is the only program that I can think of was national champions in both sports in the same year.

Well, we've avenged the 2004 round of 32 tourney upset as a 1 seed to Alabama.
Time to avenge the the 2000 round of 32 tourney upset as a 1 seed to UNC.

I was wondering if or when that name was going to get dropped..... A little surprised we don't give it the same treatment that we now give to the word "Heiisman."

While that was obviously a setback for our program, its personal effect is a lot more subdued because I learned about it secondhand. I wasn't even yet a sports fan back then; I was a sophomore at Caltech, struggling through an organic synthesis lab.
