I kind of laughed at the part of that post underestimating our guards as "very average", especially Kiana. If I remember right, I think that poster only watched one or two games. We do need to reload with guards as Ki is a senior and Anna is a 5th year.

Recruiting war for 2023 Mendelson may come down to Tara versus Hambly.  If she accepted a VB scholarship I'm almost certain Hambly would let her play basketball after VB concluded if she wanted.  If she accepted a BB scholarship I doubt Tara would let her play volleyball.

Isn't there a rule that, because WBB is the higher ranked sport (not sure how that is determined), if Mendelson is on scholarship and plays both WVB and WBB, her scholarship counts against WBB?

mendelson videos. impressive!

The comment about the Hulls not being very good on defense
actually prompted me to laugh out loud.

Anyone who has played competitive basketball can see
how disruptive they are.
I have memories of George Crace, two inches shorter me, blanketing me for four quarters of a game;
it felt like he became part of my jersey.
That one game gave me an appreciation of brilliant defense that never has left me.

Years later, hearing Gary Payton described as "The Glove"
came home perfectly.

A commentator for the Utah game touted Lexie for Pac 12 defensive POY,
then added that Anna Wilson was deserving, too.
Agree.

As with any team with a brobdingnagian fan bandwagon effect, signal to noise ratio among the Boneyard is high, and most of the (IMHO) savvier BY fans either said congrats or ignored. And all that winning has gone to their fans' head - look back at the thread reacting to Jones picking Stanford and you'd have thought a meteor hit earth and unleashed a zombie apocalypse.

Unlike most here, I am a big Geno fan, and a fan of many of his players (lately, Stewie, Napheesa Collier, and Crystal Dangerfield, whose ROY WNBA campaign this past summer was an inspiration to anyone not endowed with amazing height). But the fan base is more than a little much.

Yes, that one was funny too. The Hulls are supposedly too slow footed to defend guards and generally not very good on defense or offense, but they do get credit for hustling a lot and being all over the court.

I actually like Auriemma as well. I think deep down inside, he really does care about his athletes and you see it in how much the alumni care about him and stick up for him. All the bullshit that he spews is just that - bullshit to take the spotlight off his athletes. Is it the right approach for every team? Certainly not... but I think it works for him.

And as for Mendelson... as a volleyball fan, I hope she commits to Stanford and just sticks to volleyball! We have enough help in the post as it is and she would make an excellent middle or right side :)

I've a good impression of Coach A, too,
for the reasons you give, Sb.

In today's game is Lauren Betts cheering for Stanford or Colorado?

I think this loss kinda underscores Auriemma's success. He is a polarizing figure to say the least, but he is the gold standard when it comes to winning and sheer consistency. We just lost to a team with a losing record (obviously unranked). By my count, UConn has 3 losses in the last two decades-ish to unranked teams (and none since 2011-12) and as far as I can tell, you have to go back to at least the 90s for them to lose to a team with a losing streak. Through bad shooting games, bad officiating games, whatever the situation may be, the Huskies very rarely lose to a bad team.

I also heard they've also gone 1,000+ games without consecutive losses too. Having suffered this loss to Colorado just puts that consistency into focus; we had a bad game and Colorado did enough to win. The Huskies have almost always avoided that same fate to unranked teams.

I'm not sure this comparison is fair. They only need to get up for DePaul, and perhaps Seton Hall and Marquette in some years.  Stanford plays a much tougher schedule in a much stronger conference.

I would grant that a much more in-depth comparison would be needed to really compare the level of competition over the last two decades, but as one point of example: is Colorado (6-6) that much better than a Providence team (5-7) or a Villanova team (8-2) that UConn destroyed in their last two games? If you pull up season statistics for all three teams, they are not that different. Especially, in a season where out of conference games are rare, it's hard to really do an accurate comparison.

RE: WBB #1 2022 Lauren Betts is Cardinal! - Hulk01 - 01-18-2021

In the two seasons preceding this one, UConn played 10 top 25 teams, six of them top ten teams.
Stanford played 21 top 25 teams, 14 of them top ten teams.

It's my belief that a more taxing schedule makes a team vulnerable to poor performances against weaker opponents.
And the pandemic and all its complications has to have added to the stress.

RE: WBB #1 2022 Lauren Betts is Cardinal! - oldalum - 01-18-2021

To add to Hulk's rejoinder:

1. Providence and Philadelphia are at a much lower altitude than Boulder.
2. It is tougher to beat good conference opponents 2 or 3 times a year, year after year, than to beat a good out-of-conference opponent every once in a while. Easier to beat a better team when you are more familiar with their system and players.
3. Colorado may be 6-6 but I wouldn't characterize them as a "bad" team. For one thing, they no longer have a "losing" record!
4. We haven't lost consecutive games yet!

That may be true, but some of our losses have been early in the season, such as to Texas or to Santa Clara.

Unfortunately, we can't do a counterfactual and switch conferences for a couple seasons to compare results.
