RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - johnbar - 04-22-2023

Kevin Hambly was at the beach stadium for a while yesterday.  On his way out, I asked him about open practices or scrimmages.  He said no, that won't be any (as someone had previously reported). this spring

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 05-05-2023

Julia Blyashov (OH) is a 2023 recruit.  She had a shoulder injury and was not playing the past two months.   Her WAVE club team was seeded #17 in the 18s Open USAV NC tournament.  Julia was released to play literally just before the tournament started this past weekend (background story on Volleyballmag.com).  With her the WAVE team won the tournament and she was voted MVP.

Last year the incoming class was announced May 18,2022.  So it should be about two more weeks for the 2023 incoming class to be announced.  Will there be any surprise walk-ons in the class?    Could be.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BobK - 05-05-2023

I was thinking 2 years the class was announced sooner. Wrong. Here it is

U19 USA team playing first match in NORCECA Pan America Cup.  Two starters are Stanford recruits.  Future looking pretty bright even without Big NIL and transfer portal.

In regard to the transfer portal it can work both ways.  All five of Ohio State's covid eligible seniors transferred out as grad students to play elsewhere in the fall.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 05-09-2023

Will Hambly hire a third paid assistant coach?  NCAA will allow three paid assistants starting this fall.  Seems like most of the Big-10 teams are hiring a third paid assistant.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BobK - 05-09-2023

You sure about WVB. Softball and baseball will be adding a third assistant. Hope so though it was discussed like 10 years ago and rejected then

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 05-09-2023

I saw on a Penn State WVB board that the HC was interviewing for a third paid AC.  I asked them for a link to the NCAA rule change.  This is what they posted:

https://www.ncaa.org/news/2023/1/11/media-center-division-i-council-modernizes-rules-for-coaching-limits.aspx

This is the quote they pointed to with the interpretation that all DI college sports can replace the voluntary assistant coach with a paid coach.  They say the rule goes into effect July 15, 2023 but that's not in the article.

"The Council voted to eliminate the voluntary coach designation across Division I, instead including those coaches within a new limit for countable coaches in each of the applicable sports."

But I'm not so sure now about their interpretation.

USA U19 team 2-0 against overmatched teams in pool play at NORCECA Pan Am Cup thus far.

"Outside hitter Julia Blyashov led the team in scoring with seven points. Outside hitter Kaci Demaria and middle blocker Calissa Minatee followed closely with six points each. The U.S. held an impressive 30-11 advantage in attacks [NORCECA term for kills] throughout the match."

Kaci Demaria (6'3" OH 2025) rumored as being recruited by Stanford.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 05-11-2023

WVB is big at University of Nebraska.  They are holding a match this fall in their football stadium:

https://volleyballmag.com/nebraska-volleyball-051123/

Nebraska sold more than 82,900 tickets in 48 hours for its August 30 match against Nebraska-Omaha in Memorial Stadium.

Ticket sales opened on Tuesday, April 25 with season-ticket holders purchasing 17,900 tickets.   The initial allotment was gone in less than an hour.    Only limited-view seats were left by Wednesday night, and all were sold by 6:40 a.m. on Thursday.    Later that day, students claimed all the on-field standing-room-only tickets in less than three hours.

Google Translate does remarkably well converting that to English. Nice interview!

USA U19 team wins gold at NORCECA Pan Am Cup.  Stanford potential recruit Andrew was the high scorer in the gold medal match:

According to Kentucky's schedule, they are at Northern Colorado University the same weekend as Stanford but the two teams don't play each other.  That's surprising.  First weekend should be a good way to ease into the season.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 05-16-2023

Andrew won best blocker award on U19 team at Pan Am Cup.  Considering she won over older players on team USA might be viewed as a good sign.

If WVB was going to get a player through the portal it would have been announced by now.

"The spring period for transfer portal closed yesterday. While a few more names might emerge, this time proved to be much quieter than December and early January. Now all eyes shift to the prep recruiting contact period which begins for rising juniors on June 15."

More info will probably drift out after June 15 about what 2025 players Hambly is recruiting.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 05-24-2023

The hiring of the new WBB assistant inspired me to check the 2023 WVB roster on gostanford.com.  Here are the changes I am seeing:

Alex Lougeay (rising senior): No longer on the roster.  She did not play her freshman year and last year due to injury.  I heard she had multiple concussions and was thinking of medically retiring.   Or maybe she graduated in three years?  Would Jamesy want to comment?

Christina Armori (rising sophomore):  No longer on the roster.  She is an international student from Greece. I don't believe she played last year and her chance of playing this season probably is even less. I'll have to check if she is still a student when I have time.  She is a walk-on so why put all the time into the team when she can focus full time on studies?

Both assistant coaches are still on the roster page so that's good.  Some stability of staff would be helpful.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BobK - 05-24-2023

I think Alex in school or graduated in March
Yes great the assistants are back. You mentioned that iirc july first they can add a third assistant. I haven’t seen that Although true for softball and baseball so hope so
Still haven’t seen mentioned of the new walk ons for next year although with know Koko Kirsh is one
I cannot figure out the 12 scholarship player for next season. Probably the same as last season

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - johnbar - 05-25-2023

Alex Lougeay and Christina Armoni are both still listed in the Stanford directory.  Alex will be a senior next year.
Perhaps whatever health issue kept her out this year is still ongoing.  Or she discovered she wanted to pursue other things.

I hadn't realized her father (Stace Lougeay) played pro beach VB.  (Her bio says he played AVP and FIVB, but BVBinfo.com only lists AVP events for him, in the mid-1990s.)

As another poster commented, she'll be a senior next year but not playing volleyball.

According to the article in June the Stanford team will be going to: Istanbul, Turkey;   Prague, Czech Republic;   and Maribor, Slovenia.   I had to look up on a map where Maribor is located.  According to the internet volleyball is popular in Slovenia.
