"I think that’s wishful thinking. Shaw will use whatever message he thinks will bring in a recruit. But no coach is ever going to intimate that he is not going to be the coach. Harbaugh didn’t make that pitch even when he was negotiating to become head coach at Kansas (or later with the 49ers).
Coaching selects for people who are supremely confident of their abilities. Even if Shaw is let go immediately after the game tonight, he will go to his grave thinking he could have turned Stanford around, if the administration would just give him the chance, and I suspect that is th e pitch he is using on recruits. “Be part of the class that takes us back to the Rose bowl” would be met with derision on these boards, but I would not be at all surprised if that’s what Shaw is saying to recruits, earnestly.

Four dimensional analysis on Benjamin:
Services: 247 composite #363 (#34 CB), On3 consensus #372 (#39 CB), 247 #27 CB (the top corner in the nation outside the top 247), On3 #59 CB, Rivals #41 CB (5.7 grade, same grade as Jaden Slocum, Mitch Leigber, Jimmy Wyrick, Omari Porter, Salim Turner-Muhammad, Jonathan McGill, Stuart Head, Terrence Alexander, Zach Hoffpauir, Devon Carrington, Delano Howell though Howell came in as a RB), ESPN #276 (#30 CB)
Offers: Stanford, Boston College, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Connecticut, Duke, Georgia Tech, Iowa, Kansas, Liberty, Louisville, Marshall, Maryland, Massachusetts, Miami of Ohio, Michigan, Michigan State, Missouri, Nebraska, Northwestern, Penn State, Pitt, Purdue, Temple, Tennessee, Toledo, West Virginia, Western Michigan, Wisconsin
Production: West Bloomfield does not list stats at all on Maxpreps for any of Benjamin's years in high school, which is extremely annoying. According to the Maxpreps strength of schedule algorithm, Benjamin's level of competition is slightly below average in relation to other Shaw recruits. In track, he's got personal records of 22.60 in the 200 as a sophomore and 11.69 in the 100 as a freshman (did not run the 100 as a sophomore except in relays and has not yet had his junior track season). It will be interesting to keep tabs on him this spring but those are competitive marks. Adjusted for age they're maybe a tick on the faster side by Stanford standards. My best guess is a Jaden Slocum kind of athlete.
Highlights: The highlights show that Benjamin has played varsity football since the beginning of his freshman year. The freshman highlights, which show him playing a traditional cornerback position but almost exclusively feature plays reacting to run plays, included a pass defended and a fumble recovery. The most notable thing to me is they show a very forceful tackler by freshman standards. The sophomore highlights have much more of an emphasis on coverage and passes defended and also have a few highlights showing him make quality plays in punt coverage. The only notable opportunity to watch Benjamin against future major college football players that year came against Southfield, which had three fellow sophomores, a quarterback and two receivers, who join Benjamin as some of the top prospects in Michigan in the 2024 class and were therefore an interesting test. Benjamin exploded in that game with what appeared to be a pick six (coming out of center field on a bit of a jump ball), a 42 yard touchdown run on a jet sweep, two other passes defended, and two open field tackles near the line of scrimmage. He was matched up all game long against 3-star WR Tashi Braceful, so to have that production against a major QB throwing to a major WR is nice. The highlights for the Southfield QB, Isaiah Marshall, mostly victimized other players but did show him dropping a dime over Benjamin's shoulder to Braceful along the sideline for a 24 yard gain and completing a 10 yard slant to Braceful against Benjamin for a fourth down conversion. As a junior Benjamin reprised the match-up against Southfield and had a quieter game (which can also be a good thing for a cover corner), though he did have a pass breakup covering the slot receiver. Benjamin has not posted full season junior highlights yet but the season is over and all individual game highlights have been posted, so I think we have a good picture.
A very nice start to 2024 recruiting to get some momentum for a new coach who will need it with a roster in disarray. I especially like getting a quality DB out of the gate. Benjamin fits squarely in the mold of DBs Akina has recruited for years, but that level of recruiting far outpaces the pre-Akina norm, so this is a nice bequest to the new staff. The previous class is also currently very light on DBs, so it's nice to give Frausto-Ramos some company in the pipeline. On paper, both Frausto-Ramos and Benjamin would appear to be multi-year fixtures for Stanford at corner, though of course you never know. On a subjective level, some of Benjamin's interviews and highlights indicate a swagger, which is usually fun/needed at DB.

Services: 247 composite N/A, On3 consensus #752 (#109 WR), 247 #162 ATH, On3 #79 WR, Rivals NR (5.6 grade, same grade as Silas Starr, Bryce Farrell, Isaiah Brandt-Sims, Taijuan Thomas, Conner Crane, Dontonio Jordan, Devon Cajuste), ESPN #34 ATH (I don't understand at all how there can't be a 247 composite ranking when each individual service has ranked him and all but 247 grade him respectably)
Offers: Stanford, Cal, Eastern Michigan, UNLV, Utah
Production: As a senior against heinous competition (bottom one percent of Shaw recruits, only Marcus Graham and Ryan Sanborn lower among the last 210 signees), Harris had 73 catches for 1492 yards (sixth in California, with future teammate Tiger Bachmeier fifth) on 20.4 yards per catch, with 24 touchdowns (second in California). He accounted for 51.4 percent of his team's passing offense, which is a mammoth amount but actually behind both future classmates Ahmari Borden (55+ percent, only Fehoko and Reuben more dominant by that measure in the years I've tracked) and Bachmeier. Harris had modest rushing production, nine carries for 49 yards. [Younger brother Jalen, led the team in rushing with 660 yards and 8 touchdowns on an eye-popping 12.2 yards per carry.] On defense, Harris had 0.9 tackles per game (dead last among all tacklers on the team), which probably indicates not playing much on defense, but he did have an interception. On special teams, he returned three kicks an average 34.3 yards and two punts, one a 73 yard return and the other a 22 yard return. Maxpreps did not report stats for his sophomore (a short five game pandemic season) or junior years. His Hudl highlights claim he played only four games as a junior and had 27 catches for 568 yards (21 yards per catch) and 8 touchdowns, massive dominance like his senior year. In track, he only ran the 100 one time as a junior and clocked an 11.70. If that's his best it's on the slow end but not the slowest WR Shaw has brought in (Whitfield and Starr slower plus numerous WR recruits who didn't even run the 100). But it's almost certainly not his best, and maybe not close, as it's the only time he ran. Still, enough to know he's not a burner.
Highlights: In a sign of what a late bloomer he is, he didn't even join post a Hudl highlight until after his junior year and didn't start posting single game highlights until this year. His junior year highlights show a serviceable mix of routes but are most notable for showcasing him getting vertical and using his big size (6'3"), especially in the end zone to go up for balls or box defenders out. There are yards after catch plays highlighted but they may have been a function of lowly competition. Harris has yet to post full season senior year highlights but in the partial highlights he posted it's even more getting vertical and using his size in the end zone and a lot more yards after catch, with juke moves introduced compared to the previous year. Again, one wonders what it would look like against better competition. The only evidence of Harris ever lining up against a future major college football player actually came on defense, against Miramonte and future UCLA QB Luke Duncan. Harris' highlights show him very impressively snuffing out a pass in the flat to the running back for an 8 yard loss (from the 10 yard line to the 2 yard line). On the very next play Duncan tried to buy a few yards with a quick slant and Harris broke up that pass. On Duncan's highlights it's a bit hard to see the jersey numbers of the Berkeley defenders who got beat but it does seem Harris got the worst of it/left his feet a few times. Beyond that game, I can't find any evidence of Harris ever playing a major player, so keep that in mind when watching his impressive highlights.
It's odd to evaluate players in between coaching regimes, as we don't even know what the personality or schemes will be going forward, nor are players like Harris guys who have been evaluated, recruited, or signed off on by the new regime. Indeed, an argument can be made that Harris committed when he did in part to secure a spot (or make it harder for a scholarship to be withdrawn), though it appears he's genuinely all in on Stanford regardless of coaching. But this is a legitimate prospect, and sometimes late bequests of ancien regimes can be godsends for the new group. Thomas Keiser springs to mind as a poignant example from the Harris to Harbaugh transition. In this case, Harris looks the part as a legitimate Pac-12 WR. He fits the mold Kennedy has quite obviously favored - big receivers with massive high school production. For those looking for big-time speed or quickness, this isn't your guy. But for a team hemorrhaging players with a lot of uncertainty about what future rosters look like at all positions, getting a plausible Pac-12 guy is something we should be happy about at every position.

I have to imagine any former FCS HC is like a kid in a candy store, moving to a Power 5 program as HC when it comes to recruiting. I mean the quality of talent you can land after having to settle for lesser players, must be thrilling. Taylor - like Harbaugh before him - is likely to go maybe even a little overboard with offers.
I never liked David Shaw's limited offer approach, and I absolutely didn't like the "if you have an offer, its basically irrevocable" approach either. The players are for themselves, so you need to be too as a Head Coach. Don't be afraid to pull offers after guys have committed to get beat players, or at least ones who didn't show well as Seniors after committing after Junior season. If admissions can can offers for late underperformance, so too should an athlete have his offer pulled for underperforming in their sport in their final year.
I like how Troy Taylor talks about serving the players, but that doesn't start until the LOI is signed, and a lot can happen between offer, commitment, and LOI.

Word gets around, and if an offer is not an offer then why would a player commit? Offers shouldn't be absolutely irrevocable, but if an offer is pulled after a recruit commits, there better be a really good reason.

This is a more recent phenomenon. We had fewer offers and made offers later in the past.
