Shaw is just shy of 50. I would take the over on "0".  I agree, though, that if he doesn't stay at Stanford for another 10-15 years, and doesn't become a head coach anywhere else, I could see him go into broadcasting.

I don't think he wants to head coach anywhere else anyways. I'd take the 0.

He seems to really enjoy his NFL Draft gig, so I wouldn't at all be surprised to see him more in that capacity.

Today, I am sure you are correct. In 10 years, who knows? Things change, aspirations change. One also has to consider that in coaching, it is not if you will be fired, it is when you will be fired. A few 3-9 and the tune on this board and in the general population would be very different. Hopefully, that never happens. Wanting to prove you can be an NFL coach, that could happen. I could also see the broadcasting route, but I think that works much better for Shaw as an avocation. Doing it day in and day out is a lot different. He has credibility because he is currently "in the biz". That makes it a lot easier.

I, for one, agree completely. To the extent that he thinks of this stuff I bet that he feels "there is a group of fans that don't appreciate the job that I've done, maybe they'll feel differently when I'm gone" as opposed to "fooled 'em again".

Regardless of how you feel about his actual performance, there's no chance that he's at home thinking "there are some Internet posters who know more about football that I do, I'm glad that most of the public hasn't caught on to the fact that I've won over 70% of the games - at Stanford - despite my incompetence."

In my experience, most people who earn large sums of money (such as $9 million per year) attribute their success to their own brilliance, whether justified or not. I doubt that Shaw is the exception.

RE: Stanford's 990 for 2019 - BostonCard - 09-22-2021

UCOP published its university salaries for 2020.

https://ucannualwage.ucop.edu/wage/

Wilcox bagged $3,113,334.00.  On a per-win basis, Shaw was a relative bargain!
Kelly at UCLA earned $4,313,333.00, so he was a slightly better deal on a per-win basis than Shaw.
Both coaches had losing seasons last season.

Interestingly, UCLA also paid out $3,000,000.00 to one James Mora, so their overall outlays on head football coaches were higher than Stanford's.

Do we have any idea what our coordinators are being paid?     I'm guessing a housing subsidy is likely in play as well in the somewhat new Arrillaga housing down by El Camino Real.   $700K+ plus housing....?

Those coordinator salaries are just not competitive with the best Power 5 teams these days.

For those dreaming of landing better coordinators they had better hope that Stanford is paying something close to 2X that UC system rate.

if Stanford is paying Tavita Pritchard $900k-$1.5m he's never leaving...

Tavita Pritchard became offensive coordinator in 2018. Here are the FPI efficiency rankings for offense, defense and special teams since then:

2018: offense 15; defense 37, special teams 8
2019: 60, 90, 41
2020 (six games): 18, 96, 16
2021 (three games): 26, 69, 17

So in the Pritchard era, the offense has ranked better than the defense every year, even in that putrid 2019 year when our starting QB and most of our OL were injured. On the other hand, the special teams has ranked better than the offense each year.

I know I'm spitting metaphorically in the wind, but we are spending way too much time bellyaching about the offense, IMO.

Maybe yes; maybe no.
I'll agree that the O has performed better than the D, insofar as its place in D1 football rankings.
But for the numbers to have real meaning, I think you need to account for level of recruits on O vs. D.  My sense is that Stanford recruits FAR more highly-rated O players than D players; thus, they should perform better on O than D, all other things being equal (and I'm not suggesting all other things are equal).

Sorry, but that's yesterday's news on this site.
And, yes, I think we all agree that unless Shaw can start taking us to NY6 bowls again it is excessive.

from what I've been told, our coordinators aren't making that much coin.

Will some of the $500 million of incremental spending from the excess endowment returns this year
end up in the Athletic Department?

A piece of this could go toward permanent funding for the 11 sports that were temporarily cut.

I would be very surprised if they gave any of the $500m to the AD given this from the press release

Quote:“These results have created a tremendous opportunity to advance Stanford’s mission,” said Stanford President Marc Tessier-Lavigne. “To that end, I am pleased to announce that the Trustees have approved using $500M of endowment, on top of endowment payout. These funds will be used to support our core academic mission and to accelerate our education, research, affordability, inclusion and outreach activities under our Long-Range Vision.”

If it wasn't already clear to everyone, MTL doesn't give a damn about athletics. Cutting the 11 varsity sports was his idea, not Muir's.

At the very least it was at his behest and with his knowledge and support.  My guess, however, is that the sequence went:

MTL to Drell: Athletics is costing too much money and we need to re-balance our mission (or something equally vague and high-minded).
Drell to Muir: Cut the budget and reduce the number of scholarships
Muir to MTL: The only way I can do this is to cut some sports, is that what you want?
MTL to Muir: Yes
Muir to Stanford: We are cutting 11 sports due to... reasons
Stanford to Muir: WTF?
Muir to Stanford: Sorry, it's been decided, nothing we can do to reverse it.
Stanford to MTL: WTF?
MTL to Stanford: OK, we will save the sports.

One under-appreciated feature about Shaw versus Harbaugh is that John, John, and Bob provided a much more favorable environment to operate under than Mark, Persis, and Bernard.  For example, I am virtually certain that under today's administration, Harbaugh's DUI would have been disqualifying.  Conversely, I wonder if under the previous administration, Turley would have lost his job for what he did.

My Translation:  Stanford's attempt at a "meaningful response" to the DoF ("Death of Floyd").
