I hope Miner is okay.

A little shaky at the end.  Overall a beautiful win.  Nice to see Tillman get some playing time.

Yes, it looked like she might have broken a tooth or got a pretty severe cut in her mouth.  Just guesses on my part from a less than perfect livestream video.   That would be a bummer.   It looked to me like the type of injury that wouldn't prevent a player from being available next weekend but who knows.

Up to that point Miner was incredible.  If Stanford was a final four type of team Miner would be in the discussion for NFOY.

A fan on the East Coast would have had to stay up past 1:00 am to watch the finish of this match.

I'm glad this was on Stanford Live Stream rather than the PAC-12 networks.  We got to see the senior celebration of Holly & Mackensie

Despite the confusion, it felt like the rest of the team stepped up and played with more intensity after Miner went out.  At least for a while.

The never-ending stream of injuries experienced by this team throughout this PAC 12 conference play just befuddles me.

They just can't get a BREAK!

Another way to look at it is that they haven't played enough in a regular rotation.  Effectively, they are in early season form where they're mostly playing as individuals without the benefit of a full season of knowing what the players around them are going to do.   So, having different players come in didn't break down the teamwork as much as it might have, because that teamwork hasn't fully matured this season.

Losing our setter didn't hurt our blocking (much, as she does get some blocks), and that was a big part of our game (15 blocks in 4 sets at home, 16 blocks in 5 sets at WSU);.

It seems Tufuga did a great job.  I was somewhat surprised that the hitters seemed to have little problem adjusting to a different setter.  The team as a whole played better than I expected.  Congrats to all of them.

If Miner is able to return soon (ie, no concussion protocol, no broken facial bone), and if she did hurt her teeth, then I expect she'll be wearing a mouth piece and maybe a face mask. Would that hinder her communication abilities until she's used to it?

Did Fidelak red-shirt this year so she'd have the opportunity to play somewhere as a grad-transfer next year?

Yes.  It was mentioned last night she will be pursuing a Master's at University of Denver and continuing to play volleyball.
And eventually getting a doctorate.

With the COVID year, she has two years of eligibility left.

Well, one thing is that most of the sets to the outside hitters are second and third tempo sets that gives our hitters time to adjust to the height and position of the sets.  We tend to run fewer quick, shoots, and slide sets, which really require the setter and hitter to be on the same page.  As a result, going from Miner to Tufuga didn’t mess with the timing as much as it would have if we relied on timing sets more.

Time for some terminology inquiries here, what is a second tempo set and what is a third tempo set?

I had trouble understanding the audio on the senior night video shown in Maples last night.  Fortunately, it has been posted to social media.

It's not the terminology I use but it's used by some volleyball coaches; particularly in youth volleyball.

I do agree with the basic point BC was making. Higher the set, less the need for perfection in timing and location.

If Tufuga sets next weekend I'm ok with that. Of course Miner is one of the best setters in the country.

To change the topic while I'm here, Stanford's RPI might improve a step or two. Hard to tell though without researching what the teams close to the Cardinal's RPI did this weekend.

Palo Alto got it.  Basically, these are slower sets that give the hitter a chance to watch the set and adjust their hit accordingly.  On the flip side, they also give the defense a chance to set up the block, so they are both easier to get a good swing and easier to block.  Quick sets, shoots, and slides (collectively referred to as first tempo sets or tempo sets, require the hitter to commit, and in the case of a quick set to the middle blocker, already be off the ground, at the time the setter sets the ball.  So, they require exquisite timing between the setter and hitter; if the set is even a little higher or slower than expected, the hitter will be on her way down when the set arrives and won’t be able to get a good swing.  These are not the sets you want to do without a lot of practice, and it is not a surprise that a freshman setter, even one as good as Miner, hasn’t yet developed the experience with her hitters to do them routinely in games (it also doesn’t help that our passing has been lacking, as you really need to have everything in place to run tempo sets).

Very well explained.  Thank you!
