RE: Class of 2023+ - WBB fan - 01-22-2022

There's a nice bit about Amanda Muse, 2023 potential with Stanford on her list, in this morning's article in the SF Chronicle sport section, "Heritage-Brentwood Player in Spotlight in Ionescu showcase"

RE: Class of 2023+ - BobK - 01-25-2022

Betts and Nivar named McD All Americans and will play in the McD game

Nearly half (11 of the 24) invited players are heading to Pac-12 schools:

Stanford (2; #1 Betts, #20 Nivar)
UCLA (2; #2 Rice, #19 Jaquez)
Oregon State (2; #6 Gardiner, #10 Beers)
Arizona (2; #9 Nnaji, #21 Clark)
USC (1; #8 Gayles)
Oregon (2; #7 Gray, #13 VanSlooten)

In comparison, the two next conferences with the most recruits heading to their schools (ACC, SEC) combined have less than the Pac-12 (a total of 10), then UConn has two and Baylor has one

RE: Class of 2023+ - 2006alum - 01-25-2022

Great to hear re: Nivar. Both a good sign for her prospects to slide into the PG role next year, and also look forward to getting to see her play against the top HS girls. (Though I recall that Haley Jones had a terrible McD's game and it portended absolutely nothing whatsoever.)

Here are ESPN's little blurbs about them:

Lauren Betts:

"Betts is a 6-foot-7 post, the top center in the class, a two-time USA Basketball gold medalist and the youngest member of the 2021 U19 World Cup team. The 2021 Gatorade Colorado player of the year will bring a traditional inside presence to a Stanford program that has a history of post development and utilization in both the triangle and Princeton offense schemes."

Indya Nivar:

"Nivar's development over the past three years has been steady. A gifted guard with a strong frame and rise on her jumper, she has gotten more aggressive offensively over the past year. She can lead the offense and get others going, or she can be the focal point for clutch buckets. Stanford is getting a versatile perimeter player."

With Wilson, the Hull twins and Hamilton most likely all gone after this season, we'll definitely need Nivar to step in and possibly make an immediate impact next year at the guard position.

Assuming Lexi moves on and everyone else returns. We will have 8 McDonalds All Americans on our roster next season.
-Nivar, Betts, Demetere, Iriafen, Brink, Belibi, Jones, Prechtel

Aside from South Carolina, not sure another program has that many! Impressive!

And ours are homegrown rather than acquired in the transfer portal!

Yes, Stanford will definitely need freshman NIVAR to step up as a combo guard next season, with the graduation of HAMILTON, Lacie HULL and WILSON. The other PGs next season are junior VAN GYTENBEEK, RS freshman HARIEL and freshman LEPOLO from which only VAN GYTENBEEK has college playing experience.

RE: Class of 2023+ - 2006alum - 01-26-2022

For sure. I am hopeful there's some possibility Lacie comes back so she, Jones, Van Gytenbeek, and the frosh can run point by committee. With Betts coming I actually think the most logical lineup by mid-season will be Some(Point-playing)Guard/Jones/Jump/Brink/Betts. Jones can still bring the ball up and initiate like she does, Jump at the wing, and two bigs (hopefully with Brink being more comfortable coming back out to the high post more).

Is it just me, or did it feel like we were desperate for reliable scoring bigs for what seems like ages, and now all of a sudden we find ourselves with the complete opposite problem?

at times, but in my memory, since 2000 we have more often been short of star point guards. for all-american bigs, we had the ogwumike sisters, jayne appel, nicole, kayla.  and at guard candice and maybe jeanette.

The way I remember it, we had good point guards in the early 2000's, it was just that there were too many injuries.

Jamie Carey - concussions

Susan King Borchardt - injured against Oklahoma

Tony Kokenis - injured in NCAA tournament game

Were there others? Was Hones out for one year's NCAA's? I can't remember.

Imagine what last year's NCAA's would have been like for us if Kiana had been injured late in the year.

There's also Brown. Perhaps she surprises and comes back strong and ready to contribute double-digit minutes

RE: Class of 2023+ - BobK - 01-26-2022

After missing now two seasons that's pretty doubtful on Brown

RE: Class of 2023+ - 2006alum - 01-26-2022

We haven't had a truly dominant big, especially on offense, since Chiney in 2013-14. The closest have been Erica McCall (really only her senior season when we went to the Final Four) and Alanna Smith (same, basically midway through her junior year to end of senior year). For much of that stretch our offense subsisted off of role players who could provide three point shooting (Samuelsons/Jump), jump shots (Orrange and Thompson) and slashing guards (Carrington and McPhee). The beauty of Kiana Williams was that she could do all of those, but she didn't really have a big she could reliably feed to inside, because, for a variety of reasons, none of Ally Beebe, Kailee and Kaylee Johnson, Nadia Fingall, or Maya Dodson ever become reliable insider scorers. It's just frustrating that we can't seem to assemble all the pieces at the same time!

Just a bit a friendly ribbing since your point is spot on, but I think there are a lot of teams that would love to have enough the pieces assembled at the right time to have won a national championship!

Haha, very fair! Last year we did have all the pieces we needed and just enough inside presence to get over the hump. I just worry that we won't be able to take advantage of all our talented bigs without the complementary ball handlers! And yes, after last season, my ambitions for our team are definitely higher!

That's true. Though we missed on Rice, hopefully Nivar's McDonalds All-American selection is an indication of big things to come and maybe we can land Watkins in the Class of '23.

Dodson also has figured out something at N.D. She is averaging 12.6 pts per game this season with double digit scoring in seven of her last eight games and going over 20 points four times this season.

One difference for Dodson is that ND has a brutally short rotation; as a result, she’s getting to take lot of shots. As an example, she jacked up 22 shots in their loss to Duke. It looks like she’s thriving on a team that needs to use her as a one of 2-3 primary scoring options. Realistically, Stanford wasn’t ever going to be a team that needed that many shots from her. Perhaps her shot selection has also improved. I always got the sense that the Stanford coaches got frustrated when she took shots outside of her spots.

Glad Dodson is doing well at another school.  We just have so many talented low post players and Dodson would have been 4th in the depth chart behind Brink, Belibi and Iriafen.  We use Prechtel more as a wing on offense so I’m not including her.
