Final score looks like a trouncing, but it was actually very close for most of the game -- then UConn came apart in the 4th quarter

I think this should go in a different thread and not the one about our upcoming game with Pacific, but this is their first loss to an unranked team since losing to St. John's on February 18th. February 18, 2012. Yep, they almost went a decade without losing to an unranked team.

I see 12 comments on this page that don't have anything to do directly with the Pacific game. That's the nature of message boards. It's also likely to occur if a thread is started about a specific game four days before the game.

Clearly players transfer from Stanford. We’ve had three in five years go to Notre Dame. What I don’t understand is why one would speculate about specific players absent more information. Like, why would one speculate about Van Gytenbeek’s transfer status and not, say, her classmate Agnes Emma-Nnopu, who has fewer minutes than Van Gytenbeek.
Again, I’m not for hard and fast rules. But I think people who post idle speculation should reasonably expect to be called out for it.

Westbrook, I suspect, will never be the same player she was pre-knee injuries, but she was still a top 5 recruit. Their starting lineup had 3 top 5 recruits, a Big Ten A-A, and an Olympian. There is really no excuse for a group that talented to put up 44 points. Something is clearly way wrong in Storrs.

Sometimes teams that are too reliant on a superstar really struggle emotionally when the star goes out. However, I think in the long run, this will force the supporting cast to step up, and my suspicion is that if Bueckers recovers fully by the tournament, UConn will be a very dangerous team, and perhaps one that is not so one dimensional.

I can't claim to be totally up on what is going on with UConn. I can say that Geno has for years neglected to develop his bench and got away with it because of the talent level of his starting 5 plus one or two more. Seems like this year and last year it was all about Bueckers, who is a fantastic player, but too much of any one player can bite a team if the player is off for an important game or gets hurt. Geno likes to talk a lot of negativity about his players, albeit often in a joking way. Perhaps this group of players is not finding the humor in it or are letting his coaching style get into their heads. The other issue is usually UConn has something like one superstar and two other stars who make All-America teams starting. This season aside from Buecker they don't seem to have the star power they used to have when they won all those games in a row.

Well, this season's UConn is, by far, the DEEPEST UConn team ever, as in:
- 3 former #1 overall recruits (WILLIAMS, BUECKERS, FUDD)
- 1 former #2 overall recruit (WESTBROOK)
- 2 former #5 overall recruits (NELSON-ODODA, DUCHARME)
- 4 other players who were Top 25 overall recruits (GRIFFIN, EDWARDS, McLEAN, DeBERRY)
- 1 transfer who was a 1st Team All-Star Selection from another Power 5 conference (DUHASZ)
Their pressing problem right now is that all of their natural and/or designated PGs (BUECKERS, MUHL, FUDD)
are injured for at least 2 - 3 weeks, so they are forced to play WESTBROOK (who played some PG at Tennessee
but has been a SG/SF in UConn's scheme) as their starting PG and WILLIAMS as her back-up when
WESTBROOK is resting on the bench.
They will continue to have struggles vs. UCLA tomorrow and Louisville next weekend, but I think
they will beat UCLA (which is even more challenged with more injuries) but will lose to Louisville.
So they will most likely enter Big East conference play with a 6-3 W/L record.
But once MUHL and FUDD return by the start of Big East conference play, they should be fine and
might even go undefeated in the Big East despite the absence of BUECKERS. However, interspersed
with their Big East conference schedule are road games against Oregon and #1 South Carolina and
a home game versus #9 Tennessee, so OOC losses will most likely continue to pile up.
With that, they will most likely end up as a regional 2-seed or 3-seed come NCAA Tournament time.
But if BUECKERS is back by then, watch out!

Update on Lauren Ware injured in last nights game. According to Adia Barnes, Ware dislocated her knee but Medical staff was able to pop it back in place. Will probably miss 1 or 2 weeks

more precisely, she dislocated her knee cap (patella). A minor injury if no tendons/ligaments are torn, but will be susceptible to re-dislocation in the future.

Geno's post-game comments pissed me off, and I don't even like UConn or its players - or more accurately, have absolutely zero emotional attachment to them. But as others have noted, Geno historically operates with an incredibly short bench - which is shameful given the talent he reels into Storrs. He should be giving 8-10 players meaningful PT every game for roster development and security purposes. But he doesn't because . . . well, only Geno knows why (I gravitate toward wanting to have "record-breakers" under his charge, and those select few need all the PT to become "record breakers).
What sucks about this is that now UConn will be forced to improve roster depth/security, to the detriment of the other teams come the NCAAs. And that will have to do only with necessity and not some smart coaching moves by Geno.
As I said in another thread, I hope UConn loses as many games as possible (while hoping player injuries are not serious).
P.S. The PG issue that UConn faces now sounds familiar, doesn't it?

was reading all these comments as we drove cross-country over the last week, then finally got to watch UConn's loss vs. GT yesterday. Have also been reading religiously the UConn fan base's comments on the Boneyard. Struck me also interesting that their issue is of point guard -- whereas noone sympathized with our attempt to deal with our Kiana replacement challenge. I now appreciate how smoothly that has gone thus far, in comparison to UConn.
I agree with the prior poster about playing time and the more I read and thought about their bench etc. the more I posited (to my husband who is probably now bored of hearing my theory) that Geno's approach has in the past increased their ability to lock in the #1 players in a class - as they probably infer (or otherwise are told) that they will get enough playing time to help them reach All American status - leading to greater payoffs down the road in basketball. Much easier to get great statistics if you play 36-40 minutes per game than 20-30. Example closer geographically is think of how many times Graves at UO kept Ionescu in games well beyond when she was needed.
In recent years, Geno's lack of play time for non-starters may have caught up to them with increased transfers from their B team (many of whom are successful elsewhere). Now perhaps the injury issue -- others have noted that Paige Bueckers does NOT have the same strength as Diana Taurasi to deal with the physical challenges. Any team can lose players (see UO and UCLA, and we had Haley out then clearly the food in the Bahamas led to some issues with our bigs), but when that happens to a team with few players, most of whom are getting no playing time to develop,... I actually wonder if Geno will change since he hasn't yet -- perhaps instead he will retire sooner than expected. Sure does not act like a fighter other than blaming his players for not performing, though he hasn't given them the experience and confidence they need. Even some of his starters -- I also am constantly struck at the comparisons in development made by our players over their Stanford careers to the lack of progress by some of the UConn starters -- #1 Williams and #5 ONO. His pursuit and then complete focus on Bueckers has made their team so passive. Reminds me of Chiney and the Chinettes taken to another level; our struggles occurred because we did not have the talent on the court surrounding Chiney but UConn has the talent just has not found a way to develop or inspire it. Hope for their sake there is a mean reversion effect where they are able to bounce back because otherwise not sure UConn will attract players. Hello Duke - next stop for Azzi Fudd?
