CFP, in 4-team format, is not a "great" season?  Are you serious?

And btw, we don't even have a "good" season - by your definition - on our horizon.
But of course no talk about Shaw's job security, right?
Michigan is THE winningest program in college football, so a season without a bowl game win is not a great season.   Lots of Michigan seasons simply have been much better.   Yes, after more than a decade of far below average seasons this good season feels great, but in historic terms this simply isn't one of Michigan's 10 or 15 best seasons.   Therefore, IMHO merely good.

And that's without factoring in the reality that they didn't just lose the bowl game, they were crushed.

Just different standards for different programs.    The Cubs get into the playoffs then that's a great season.  If the Yankees don't win the World Series, it simply can't be a great season...for their fans.

Back to Stanford...Shaw has coached Stanford to 3 of its 15 best seasons.   Shaw definitely has had two of Stanford's greatest seasons.  And THAT is job security, at least for a bit longer.    For me his job security is tied to a brutal reality that the Pac-12 is not a desirable destination for fame and prestige right now.    When Shaw leaves I am confident (fearful) that the next coach will regress towards our historic mean and will depart if they ever get an 8-4 or better season.  Therefore I am all in on hoping Shaw fixes the problems as the Pac-12 coaching shuffle is a tough way to compete given our academic requirements, the NIL and the evolving use of the transfer portal.

Besides Shaw won't be fired before Haase IMHO.   Until Muir has the courage to terminate Haase, a coach that has accomplished so little, there is no way Shaw will be fired.   But I know folks love to complain and there is no doubt 2021 was not a great season.    It's all good.   Haters gonna hate even if they are hating on the winningest coach in the history of Stanford football.

Winningest coach in Stanford history and the guy driving the program into oblivion.  Quite the double-whammy.

BTW, assuming your definition of "historic mean" is somewhere around .500 (5-7, 6-6, 7-5), well, we were not there in 2021.
Do you expect Stanford to be at historic mean next season?
Maybe I'm unduly jaded by the last 4 games of 2021, but that seems like a pretty tall order.
The O could be good, taking into account systemic limitations; however, the front 7 looks . . . well . . . dubious.
Can you be a .500 team if you have no ability to stop the run?

P.S.  I agree that Shaw won't be fired before Haase . . . or ever.  Certainly not by Muir (he's the guy who inked him to the significant extension and pay bump).

P.P.S.  Great post by DC 86 on Michigan's historic (and current) place in college football world.

Teejers, you are right to be discouraged after this year.  The latter half of the season brought back bad memories.  I also think you have more than made your point.

From the time they went on their great run, I knew (and said) it wasn’t sustainable.  Sooner or later they were going to drop off.  Did I expect it to be as dramatic as ‘21?  No.

Shaw, imo, earned some equity with what he achieved.  And the record he rang up is his achievement.

Now the question is, can he turn it around?  I don’t know.  They had a good recruiting year from what I understand. Heavy on bigs (I don’t follow recruiting so I’m simply parroting what I’ve read.  If I’m wrong, I’d like to hear from some that do.  In fact it would be great to read an overview).  And picking up the safety - no matter how or why- is a good thing.

My hope is they turn it around.  Play around .500 next year with the arrow up.  Do I expect a return to ‘10-‘16.  No. But I never expected that.  And I don’t think the Administration now is as committed to football as it was then. Plus there is no Bob Bowlsby.  Plus the rules (early signing, portal) have changed. None of which help Stanford

If they have another year like ‘21 next year, then I think it’s legit to seek change.  I’m hoping that doesn’t happen. Not because of Shaw, but because it means the program has dropped farther.

If the o-line improves, McKee sticks around, they stay healthy, the d backfield improves as it should and they can improve the front seven….  Lots of ifs to say the least.  But I’m an optimist most of the time.

RE: College Football Playoff Thread - OutsiderFan - 01-02-2022

Why does every thread specifically not suppose to be about Stanford, turn into a Stanford kvetch fest?  There are NUMEROUS other threads to discuss Stanford Football.  Can't we just have one dedicated to the CFP that doesn't turn into Stanford Football talk?

That ship sailed long ago. But I’m happy to keep this to CFP.
