i agree with bob. i haven't being seeing bad calls from missy barlow in recent years. i have been seeing bad calls from michael price though i don't believe he's reffed any of our games yet this year.

If MB has a tendency to call ticky tack fouls, should we be wishing for her to ref our games against teams that play physical, aggressive defense like CU and UA, especially for games at Maples if, as Aida has accused, she is susceptible to homerism?

Michael Price. He did the Oregon/UConn game. He is terrible.
I don't think Missy is any better than she used to be, but that so many other conference refs are now worse.

The thing that bothers me most about Missy is that she makes calls that aren't hers to make. She will call a foul on someone when she doesn't have a good angle to see whether there is contact or not, meanwhile the official who does have the angle and can see doesn't blow the whistle. It drives me nuts!

But then she gets to go to the monitor! Nothing Missy loves better than going to the monitor, especially if it's a nationally-televised game.

My view on Missy is that I don't actually think she is egregiously wrong egregiously often, and I generally find her pretty consistent throughout a game (to me, the cardinal sin of refereeing is inconsistant calls).
But she *definitely* regularly calls stuff she doesn't have the angle to see, and she goes to the monitor way too often, especially in the waning minutes of games when momentum is especially crucial. And more than anything, I just think she calls things so technically as compared to almost any other ref, that playing a game when Missy is reffing is playing by a very different set of rules than any other PAC-12 ref.
The hallmark, to me, is when you can tell when she's reffing just by the fouls that will get called in the first 5-10 minutes of game. In the Arizona-Oregon game, I wasn't initially paying any attention to the refs. But after the second straight ticky-tacky call on Ware within 3 minutes of tip off, I instantly knew, sure enough, Missy was in for this game.

I may be making this up in my head, but I’m pretty sure that I was in Seattle for a Missy game where Vanderveer picked up a technical after…well, after the usual Missy garbage. Coach in her earlier days didn’t suffer fools gladly.
I don’t excuse the coaches’ bad behavior but can understand it and on some level, sympathize. The Pac-12 is never going to own up to its egregiously poor standard of officiating that has been a national joke since I started following women’s basketball almost 40 years ago.
We can call it being afflicted with Missy-itus, a temporary condition that causes a patient to experience a sudden highly elevated heart rate and blood pressure, resulting in chest pains, shortness of breath and SPO2 dropping below 95%. Those afflicted with Missy-itus suffer from impaired decision making and short-term loss of emotion regulation. A patient can be diagnosed after the fact by the presence of forehead bruising from repeated face palming or mild to moderate muscle soreness where the patient was physically restrained by assistant coaches from leaping onto the court. Most who are afflicted recover within ninety minutes of onset and experience feelings of embarrassment. Unfortunately, that can often mean that complete recovery has not occurred by the time of the post-game press conference. Patients respond well to a short course of benzodiazepines and/or receiving sympathetic text messages from other coaches and former players. Missy-itus has no known cure and patients who have experienced multiple episodes can also be diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.
Thank you, Triangle. This has to be the first time I've ever read anything about Missy that has made me chuckle. I became unhealthily obsessed with her performance before any of the current players (except perhaps Anna? I'd have to look up her DOB) were born. A good ref is one whose name or face we do not have committed to memory, at the very least.
Stanford fans have hated Missy for decades. I'm told it began in 2002, when we headed to Boise ranked no. 5 to face no. 12 Colorado in the sweet sixteen. A young Missy was officiating. We narrowly lost. Some fans blame her, although I didn't see the game and I can't find anything specific about Missy's role in it. But when I started watching more games in the Brooke Smith/ Candice Wiggins era Missy's name was already mud. I have booed lustily at many of her calls, but I have seen some fans heckling her mercilessly--by name--game after game. She has to know that Maples is hostile territory for her, and I wonder sometimes about reverse psychology--whether she is harsher on us because we are always on her.
I don't know about that "began in 2002." I was aware of her in the late 1990s and disliked her then. I don't know, however, if it was a widespread feeling among the fans.
As for how officiating powers that be evaluate her, it must be higher than we do. She has done some final four games, including at least one that we were in. I think it was the 2009 game against U Conn in St Louis, but I could be wrong about that.

Your comment prompted me to look up the box score of the 2009 UConn game, and, indeed, she was a ref in that game, along with Eric Brewton and Felicia Grinter (don't recognize these two names). Which bring up a couple of thoughts: (a) During the regular season, do refs like MB work exclusively for one conference (PAC-12 in the case of MB), or could they work of several conferences (e.g., working PAC-12 and WCC makes geographical sense)? (b) If MB is exclusively a PAC-12 ref during the regular season, I am surprised that she would be assigned to a game involving a team from her regular season conference. In a FB bowl game involving say, an SEC and a BIG team, one would expect an officiating crew from a neutral conference like the ACC or PAC-12.

I think Barlow is considered something of a rules expert. Unfortunately she uses that expertise to make odd borderline calls that are technically defensible but go against the spirit of the rules.
The spirit of the foul rules (and I believe this is explicitly stated in at least some rule sets) is that a foul is something that gives an unfair advantage. Thus contact that gives no advantage (ticky-tack) should not be whistled as a foul.

Of course, if one adheres literally to the "unfair advantage" (or stated another way, "no harm, no foul") principle, the old-fashioned "and-one" three point play should not exist because there was no advantage to the defense or harm to the shooter (absent excessive contact warranting a flagrant foul call, but that is another issue), because, after all, the basket was made. :)

I wonder if she indeed will retire in 3 years to 8 years (based on what she said in 1996).
This article is just a reminder that whatever that you let be public could come back to haunt you 25 years later. I wonder what benefit she got out of letting this article feature her. Imagine what someone might say if one of those stocks had been Nike. It is kinda quaint to see the 25yo financial numbers.
Like others, I find her technically accurate, but perhaps not seeing the forest for the trees. The worst non-call I've seen her make was when a Cal player threw the ball pretty obviously intentionally into an opponent's face. I think most people here think of the rules as how they learned the game, or picked up by watching the NBA, not by the current rule book. Missy seems to know the rule book. (Fans may be irritated by trips to the monitor, but those are the rules.) However, I also see her ignoring at least some of the special emphasis points in current rule books while being diligent on others, which surprises me.
I agree about Price.

OMG, bl82, why did I fall down this rabbit hole??? She is now retired from her other job. She collected a PPP loan. She married former Arizona player and current "I didn't see a foul" ref Brenda Pantoja. I have no recollection of Pantoja at UA at all, whereas seems like yesterday I was watching her teammate Adia Barnes play.
I'm often screaming about Pantoja but for the opposite reason!

I can't decide whether I should take a shower, go to confession, or what (for sticking my nose into what ain't my business).
As to the article,
Melissa Barlow says she learned the value of discipline and good strategy from basketball, which she played competitively throughout high school and college.
It goes into detail about her financial acumen, pocketing $15,000/year (1996) for reffing in addition to her pharma account exec job. It was pretty impressive.

I too want her to be able to travel and play golf somewhere warm, preferably out of the pac-12 footprint.
