I come to your board in respect for Coach Shaw and your great university. I would love to see Stanford be a major football player again. So. I have a question. Have you considered Mike Leach as your next football coach ? Think about it. Law degree from Pepperdine. Doesn't cheat and grads players. And I'm not sure he is all that happy at Mississippi State. Just a thought.

I understand why people have qualms about the professionalization of college athletics.  I don't like it at all.  But I don't want us to drop out as a power conference contender in any sport.  It's one of the things that makes Stanford, Stanford.  One of my jokes, is that Harvard and MIT could merge, we would still kick their ass in football.

If Stanford wants to field a competitive program, it will have to adapt to the new professional realities of college football.  We do have certain advantages should we decide to deploy them.  For example, to embrace transfer portal perhaps the University could offer a co-terminal bachelor's program for good student-athletes transferring from other programs.  Expecting more than one or two to come for a Master's is not realistic.  

The Stanford brand carries value.  This is why there were reports that the value of our media rights exceeded Oregon's.  Allowing the judicious juxtaposition of the Stanford brand could boost the value of NIL deals.

Preseason we were so low because we were not that good last year.  We had the talent but not the results.  Other than Texas, who has more talent than we do?

Why did we need to rebuild?

We needed to rebuild because it is hard to recruit when you have one of the all-time greatest players at their positions and nobody is going to want to sit on the bench for more than at most a year.  Unsurprisingly, by the 2019 year, when that class was seniors, we had the top recruiting class in the country (Kipp, Baird, Xu, etc.), the 2020 class was ranked 5 (Oglive), the 2021 class (Francis, Miner) was ranked #2, and the 2022 (Rubin) was not ranked in the top 10 because it was small.  But that all adds up to a top-5 team which is where we are.  And since Hambly recruited it, shouldn’t he be credited with the results.

Who do the media think Stanford will hire (or at the very least talk to)? I don't see anyone -- publicly or with a subscription I currently have -- with insider info. Nevertheless, here are the most mentioned candidates by reporters that I've seen:

before Shaw, I don’t think any of our four previous coaching hires (Willingham, a virtual unknown NFL position coach, Teavens, Harris, or Harbaugh) had been mentioned amongst the talking heads, and Shaw was a special case because the Harbaugh’s success made it highly likely that one of his coordinators would be hired as a “continuity” candidate.

Peterson is the home run hire. He wants the job you give it to him. But agree the field seems most likely. I don’t see us clamoring to give the job to Bloomgren or Mason who have ties to us but limited success as a HC. Walters seems too green as a coach in terms of resume. 

Of the existing names, I’d put Chryst, and the Sac St and San Jose st coaches st the top, but still expect the field to win out. 

In terms of philosophy, I’d love to see a HC or OC out of the Shanahan-Mcvay tree. I still believe that recruiting OL, RB and QB is our strong suit in terms of available options. A scheme that uses a multiple/creative run game as the offensive foundation is ideal for is IMO. Roman has really impressed in building an offense to suit Lamar’s unique talents, but don’t know if he had the coaching/recruiting intangibles or is more an Xs/Os guy.

As I recall, maybe wrongly, Wilner was mentioning Harbaugh pretty early, albeit as an unlikely option. Once the hire was announced, Wilner (or maybe it was Kawakami) wrote a long, scathing post about how unqualified Harbaugh was, how he'd been shopping himself around for every vacancy in existence, etc.

The question I would have about Petersen is how hungry he would be.  He is certainly a winner, both at Boise State and Washington, but he left Washington because he didn’t want to deal with the pressure.  Here’s an article from when he retired…

Yeah, you could read his quotes in a few ways. One is that he's totally burnt out and is enjoying a life of fishing, etc. Another -- especially if you focus on his point about the "skills he's learned since" -- is that he needs some time to recharge and maybe at the right time and place he'd be ready to get back to applying boots to Golden Bear butts.

In 2004 when Leland fired Teevens, the hot name was Norm Chow. A career assistant and highly regarded offensive mind. He interviewed for the Stanford job and was not selected. How did it work out for Chow? He finally got a HC job in 2011 at Hawaii. Fired four years later with a record of 10-36. A career assistant who really was not cut out to be a HC.

Stanford needs someone who has been part of a major turnaround job and can sell the administration, the fans and the players on his vision. Someone who also can bring energy to what is a really low wattage program. Confidence, competence, salesmanship and maybe a little EUTM.

To me, they show a profound lack of imagination. Two former assistants at Stanford, and a former player at Stanford, plus the “hot” former PAC-12 coach.  I’m not against any one of those guys, but Matt’s list is like 10x more comprehensive (almost literally; I’d expect 40 names there), and most of those names aren’t obvious.

(1) Been reading the CardBoard posts for many years, regarding the StanU Football Program (just recently signed up for an account);  Thanks in Advance to the Moderators for hosting this Board. Sorry for any Typos or Grammatical errors.



(2) As an Alum, & As someone stated earlier in this thread, I think its time to think "Outside The Box", and select a Head Football Coach, who is not 'directly in the Stanford Family' & who is not entrenched in the 'Stanford Way'.

(3) Coach Harbaugh was just that; Yes his father did some coaching for StanU for 1 year as DC, but for all intents and purposes JimHarbaugh's biography & career as a Player & Coach was not intertwined with Stanford & its sometimes lukewarm passion for BigTime College Football.  He was Midwestern & Big10 in his Roots & DNA, and so therefore 'BigTime College Football was a Non Negotiable Prerequisite for Life' (and there is nothing wrong with that).  We need someone who wants to Eat, Sleep & Breathe BigTime CollegeFootball, & who will want to embrace all that comes along with wanting to Consistently Win at the Highest Levels of BigTime College Football (e.g Relentless YearRound Recruiting, Transfer Portal, Total Overhauling of Offensive & Defensive Schemes within a Season if necessary,  Versatile Swiss-Army Knife Positionless Players, NIL, Innovative Approaches to LoadManaging Players Courseloads within Season, Innovative Approaches to retaining Talented 5th Year players, and More & More, etc, etc)

(4) Then as far as the 'Style of Play':

I am sure we have all noticed that in the last 10 years, (with the exception of Alabama) its largely the teams that play 'Fast MisDirection Checkers' with an UpTempo Offense, & a Legit Superstar Athletic Dual-Threat QB that have risen to dominate Modern Power5 College Football.

Look No further than the teams at the Top this year:

USC, Caleb Williams (Mobile Dual threat)
TCU, Max Duggan (Mobile Dual threat)
Michigan, JJ McCarthy (Mobile Dual threat)
Ohio State, CJ Stroud (Mobile Dual threat)
Georgia, Stetson Bennett (Mobile Dual threat)
UCLA, Dorian Thompson Robinson (Mobile Dual threat)
Oregon, Bo Nix (Mobile Dual threat)

...so we want the Next StanU Head Football Coach to be well versed in "Utilizing an Athletic Dual Threat Mobile QB & an UpTempo Offense !"


(5) I would go so far as to say, that when we moved from Having Athletic Dual Threat QBs AndrewLuck & Kevin Hogan, to Less Mobile QBs like KJ Costello & Tanner McKee, this was 1 of the Reasons our Win Loss fortunes dipped.


(6) So in Conclusion, 2  of the Important Characteristics of the. Next StanU Football Coach need to be:

(A) This Coach is Not from the "Lukewarm about BigTime CollegeFootball  Stanford Milieu"
(B) This Coach is well versed in "Utilizing an Athletic Dual Threat Mobile QB & an UpTempo Offense !"

I think Kafka has done a good to great job with the Giants, but honestly his Twitter scares me. Lots of posts about NFTs and crypto. He’s a young guy so maybe just check back in a few years…

Mike Kafka is from my high school in Chicago. I was introduced to him when he was a senior being recruited by Stanford and Northwestern among others.

I heard very good things about him, and that he would be a good fit for Stanford (as a player). He was a terrific athlete. He played wide receiver and moved to QB once the QB ahead of him graduated.

I'd be happy with him as a head coach. He's done well in KC and NY.
