Ohio State pulls it out by 2.

Next upset alert.  #19 Michigan with a 10 pt lead on #6 UNC with 1:25 to go in the 4th.

Ohio State is looking like a final four team, but to beat Oregon so convincingly  (84-67) is not a good look for the Pac.  Well, we are learning what teams are really made of.   Too bad, I never liked McGuff.  And he had two time transfer Taylor Mikesell to use against her old team Oregon.  She played all 40 minutes and scored 25.  Brutal.

Next years senior class if Bueckers leaves for the WNBA: you’d have Bueckers, Clark, and Brink. All three are good enough to be the first pick in the draft. Brink has the most upside with her size, versatility and ability to affect the game offensively and defensively.

Olivia Miles is tremendous but would not have put her ahead of Brink and Jones.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THE NEXT MONTH

Looking ahead to key Pac 12 matchups.  By this I mean games between these teams: Stanford, Oregon, Arizona, UCLA, Utah, which I expect to be the contenders.  Some of these teams can and will lose to other Pac 12 teams, but these five I predict to be the most critical teams between NCAA contenders.

Friday Dec 30 there is a good one:  11 UCLA @ 16 Oregon.  That is a day before we are back in action.

Monday Jan 2 is a very big one for us: 18 Arizona @ 2 Stanford.

Sunday Jan 8 16 Oregon @ 18 Arizona.

Friday Jan 13 2 Stanford @ 11 UCLA

Sun Jan 15 18 Arizona @ 12 Utah

Fri Jan 20 12 Utah @ 2 Stanford

Oregon has nine players on its roster with eight active.  6’7” forward Kennedy Basham injured her knee in Oregon’s opener against Northwestern.  Published reports indicate the team expects her to become available in early January.  The Ducks have a solid core consisting of guards Pao Pao, Rogers, and Gray, and forward Van Slooten (arguably the leader for PAC-12 freshman of the year).  6’8” Center Kyei rounds out the starting lineup.  Current bench consists of guards Hanson and Hurst, and forward Hosendove. Coach Graves cannot afford to lose another player to injury, especially one of the starters.

Besides the Cardinal still undefeated Utah seems to have played most consistently so far this season.  Coach Roberts has an experienced, talented team playing quite well. It has marquee wins against then #16/Oklahoma by 46 points and SEC teams Alabama and Mississippi.  Oregon has had both good and poor performances against power five opponents and lacks depth.  Arizona has depth and had a recent solid 21 pt win at Baylor but is still working to develop cohesion with so many newcomers as evidenced during the 27 point home loss to Kansas.

UCLA had a good non-conference record (11-1), winning the Battle4Atlantis tournament and holding its own for over three quarters before falling to South Carolina in Columbia.  It struggled in road wins at UCSB and USC.  UCLA Coach Close substitutes freely and has on several occasions put its five freshman on the floor.  Nine of its ten available players average at least 15 min/game.  The early season minutes the freshman accumulated should benefit the Bruins during conference and tournament play.

Speaking of local coverage... Today's online Mercury News actually has an article on WBB.
It's behind a paywall, so I won't even link to it.

8 whole sentences, plus a list of teams.  I feel that if I quote the two sentences (21 words) that mention the Stanford team, I'd be quoting too much of the article.  More than a quarter of those words consisted of the words "Stanford", "Cardinal", "Creighton", "Cal", and "No. 2".

Baby steps....

I don’t think it’s against the rules to link an article behind a paywall; I think it would be appropriate to warn people that it is or it might be.  The only prohibition is not extensively quoting an article behind a paywall. I’m not sure where the line is between fair use and excessive, so be judicious.

That would be great, I will be cheering for Creighton.  With UConn getting healthier, though, it is a pretty tall order.

U Conn vs Creighton, now has U Conn an 8 pt favorite. I'm really going to be cheering for Creighton! (Definitely want to see U Conn knocked down, esp. when I see the possibility of them being a 2 seed in Seattle, which is where the most recent bracketology has them)

Fully knowing I walking right into this, I gotta ask: why all the hate for UConn? I get that Geno's probably responsible for Tara having 1-3 fewer championships than she otherwise would have, but I will confess I don't quite get the hatred.

Unlike Barnes (swearing and flipping the bird after her final four win, doing the same at Kelly Graves), Mulkey (I don't think I even need to recite the laundry list), and Muffet (who once only referred to Asia Durr as "that other player" when asked about her getting ACC POTY over Ogunbowale), and Dawn Staley (of the mythic national championship banner she hung in spring 2020), Geno is hardly among the worst in his comportment as a coach.

Unlike teams like USF and Colorado, Geno's teams have never played dirty, have almost always run beautiful motion offenses, and have singularly advanced the state of women's basketball over the past few decades.

And unlike many extremely unlikeable stars at other schools, as a whole, the UConn women are a pretty likable group (Diana Taurasi notwithstanding!), including Stewie, Sue Bird, Maya Moore, Napheesa Collier, and Steph Dolson, just to name a few.

So I guess I don't get it. I totally understand rivalries, and I always want Stanford to beat UConn. But the schadenfraude around here doesn't really make sense to me...
