Did we have more talent on the team in the mid- to late- nineties when Mike Montgomery was routinely taking us to the tournament?  I don't remember a mega-whale recruit being on the roster that started Brevin Knight (who had one other scholarship offer), Art Lee, Kris Wheems, Peter Sauer, and Tim Young.  Even later, when we had the Collins twins, Montgomery got more out of 3* players like Lee and Weems than Haase's teams ever have.

I am young and have never watched a Stanford game pre-Dawkins.

Some of Dawkins' teams clearly had more talent than this current iteration.

I come back to Mendez. Shoot, rebound, defend. Lay it all out. Kirchofer, played as hard as anyone. They reminded me of Butler guys the year they almost won it all. Mid major talent coached up and playing hard.

Those teams were in the days before recruiting rankings, but retrospectively:
Brevin Knight was a low three star (he had only one other D1 offer)
Art Lee was a mid to high three star
Kris Weems was an average three star
Peter Sauer was a mid to high three star
Tim Young is the only like four start player in the bunch

Knight and Young went on to play in the NBA, with Knight having moderate success.  I don't think that, top to bottom, Montgomery's teams in the 90's had more talent that Hasse's, at least until the Collins twins arrived.

Actually, Mendez was a relatively highly recruited guy. I'm not sure if there was a star system back then but he certainly would have been a four-star. Put it this way: he averaged in the ball park of 38 points and 18 rebounds as a high school senior.

Kirchofer would have been a solid three-star in my opinion.

That said, they each improved tremendously over their four years. Mendy was one of the best wings in the conference as a senior and Kirchofer was a pretty good bench player that same season - he actually had one game (can't remember which) where his excellent play was needed to keep that long winning streak going.

Didn’t Mendez and Kirchofer both stay at Stanford for 5 years?  It actually helps to have guys who are willing to stick around, especially if they have good coaching to help them improve each year.

I think Mendez was hurt one year.

Whatever. Maples Magic is toast and nobody is ever going to bring it back.

"Ever" is a long time! Obviously, with the crap coaching we've seen since Monty left, the place has been moribund. But, one great coach really can make a brobdingnagian difference. Yes, the transfer portal makes it tough, but not impossible.

Fabulous memories. Where has that gone on the hardwood and the gridiron?

Considering the season start, stumbling against pretty much any good team:

There once was a head coach named Jerod
To win the Pac-12 he was dare-ed
He commenced with a bluster
His recruits he did muster
Fluster cluck is what was prepare-ed

42-19 at the half.

I had to check twice to confirm which team was playing.

RE: Isn't there a basketball game on now - CompSci87 - 12-16-2022

Green Bay is way overmatched. No size, no shooting.

RE: Isn't there a basketball game on now - burger - 12-16-2022

When the Pac-12 disbands, I propose we move to the Horizon Conference.  We'll totally dominate.

On an unrelated note, Harrison Ingram is by far the best passer on this team, and he needs to handle the ball more.

RE: Isn't there a basketball game on now - JJJ - 12-16-2022

Frosh Agarwal can shoot.

And a fantastic halftime feature interview with Andrew Luck. I hope there’s a video posted somewhere.

Great road trips - Milwaukee, Cleveland, Kansas City, Detroit, Youngstown, Fort Wayne, Pittsburgh, Dayton, Indianapolis.

Are the Pistons still playing in Fort Wayne?

Somebody at NBC heard that we were shooting a doc in FW. He said that can you believe it there is a great French restaurant there. Should have shot him.
