Pac 12 championship round 1 is in the books. Stanford is in 3rd, 8 shots back of USC. USC shot -14(!!) on the back 9.

Rose Zhang is doing Rose Zhang things. She shot a bogey-free round of 67 (-5) and leads the individual competition. She needed help from her teammates, but Sadie Englemann and Megha Ganne both struggled. Englemann bogeyed 4 of the first 5 holes to dig a hole. Then bogeyed both par 5s on the back 9. She finished at 76 (+4). Ganne's 74 (+2) included 16 pars, 1 birdie and a triple bogey on the 14th hole. It was the only triple bogey by any player on any team. Kelly Xu bogeyed 3 of her final 4 holes to finish at 74 (+2). Angelina Ye was solid in the 5th position with an even par round of 72.

Without Seay and Hecht we aren't the team we thought we would be last year.  Getting to match play will itself be a challenge.    Ganne doesn't seem to be playing up to her billing, and there is no consistency with the rest.  Simply not enough red numbers. Wasn't that many days ago that the NCAA's looked like a lock. Alright, not a lock, but the odds on favorite.

The lineup is definitely not as strong without Seay & Heck, but Kelly Xu's play has greatly improved throughout the year and I'm not ready to write off Ganne who finished top 10 at Augusta against a field that was stronger than what they will face at nationals in stroke play.

Even the top LPGA tour players have off days. Let's see where they stand after today I expect better play from Ganne & Englemann.

Also could be that Papago isn't a good course for some of these players, whereas nationals are back at Grayhawk where they had so much success last year both in stroke and match play.

They're probably no longer the favorites to repeat because of the lack of depth in the lineup but absent a collapse they'll make match play and then it's a bit of a crap shoot other than Zhang.

Ganne has had a pretty good frosh year overall to date. She had 2 top 10s in the fall, 2 more top 10s in the spring. 12 of 21 rounds under par and the 3rd lowest scoring average among the top 5 (72.24) behind Zhang (69.24) and Englemann (71.58). True, she is not competing for individual championships the way that Zhang and Heck did as frosh. But Ganne has been a solid contributor.

Still if Seay and Heck were playing, Ganne would have been in the 5th spot. But Seay and Heck are not playing so Ganne is in the 3 spot with greater expectations. She has not had a round under par for Stanford since February. And she is struggling at P12s. Maybe she is feeling some pressure.

After 7 holes today, Stanford had fallen to 4th place with Oregon and Arizona racing away from them. I was thinking that it could get worse on the back 9. But the putts finally started to fall for all of the Cardinal players. They played the final 11 holes in -7 and passed Oregon to finish round 2 in 3rd place. USC and Arizona came back in their final holes and only lead Stanford by 3 shots. The title is definitely up for grabs.

Rose Zhang leads the field by 4 shots after a 2nd round 68. She bogeyed back to back holes on 13 and 14. Then proceeded to birdie 3 of the final 4.

Kelly Xu was the other Cardinal under par with a 71 (-1). Her game is showing the improvement over the course of the season that you hope to see, especially from a freshman. Strong play from Xu could be very important for Stanford's post season success.

Sadie Englemann was back to being Steady Sadie. Even par 72.

Both Megha Ganne and Angelina Ye recovered from being +3 early in their rounds to finish with 73 (+1). They should feel good about their resilience and perseverance.

Couple of notes:
Zhang's score of 135 ties the 36 hole record for the conference tournament
Zhang turned down an invitation to play in the LPGA major in Houston this week. Avery from USC and Campos from UCLA both accepted. They will go straight from Phoenix to Houston tomorrow to play the pro tournament without a practice round.

Stanford turned in another solid round, but it was not good enough to catch USC. Stanford finished 3rd behind the Trojans and Oregon.

Rose Zhang added to her legacy with a P12 individual championship. She shot a final round 69 (-3) for a total of 204 (-12). That's the lowest winning score in P10/12 history. Her career record at Stanford is rivaling that of Tiger Woods in their respective 2 years in terms of accomplishments.

Once again, Kelly Xu led the rest of the team. With a birdie on the final hole, she carded a 71 (-1). Angelina Ye and Sadie Englemann shot 73 (+1) and Megha Ganne 74 (+2).

USC today played their alternate as a substitute for their 5th player. The sub shot 68 (-4). It's a strong team when your 6th player can go that low. Similarly, Oregon's #5 player today shot the best round of the tournament by anyone, 66 (-6). I don't know if any Stanford players besides Zhang have the capability to go low under tough conditions as Oregon's player did.

Now we wait for Stanford's regional assignment. The NCAA will announce regional selections on the Golf Channel at 10 am Pacific next Wednesday, April 26. There is only one regional in the Western US and it's all the way in Pullman. Not sure if that will be a plus or not for Stanford, but it is the most likely assignment for the Cardinal. Last year's P12 Scholar Athlete of the year was Alexandra Forsterling from ASU. But Seay did win the NCAA's Elite 90 Award for the highest GPA among all of the players at last year's NCAA championship.

Stanford has been designated the overall #1 seed for regionals (even though they are #2 in the Golfweek rankings). Stanford is assigned to the regional at Palouse Ridge in Pullman to be played May 8-10. The top 5 finishers advance to the NCAA championship.

Todays forecast is for showers and possible Thunderstorms after 2 PM.  More of the same on Tuesday.  Showers are one thing, thunderstorms are another.  If the cells are close enough, play could be interrupted and make things pretty difficult if it happens both days.  The officials I am sure will be very conservative when it comes to suspending play.

Two years ago, a regional never even got started and the NCAA decided to simply base the results on ranking going into the regional. Probably the only decision they could have made at the time, but the lack of preparedness to deal with the rain was really unconscionable.

It wouldn't surprise me if this regional gets shortened to 36 holes. I'm sure Coach Walker knows this and is making sure her team is prepared for it

Lets hope that doesn't happen, at least at this point.  We are not off to a blazing start. Dead last and only team with a plus score, lots of golf yet fortunately.

I don't think they should have a problem completing 54 holes at Pullman even with weather delays. The NCAA cancelled the regional in Baton Rouge in 2021 when 7 inches of rain fell on the golf course and the officials said that it could not be played at "tournament caliber." There is now very little rain in the forecast in Pullman.

The back 9 at Palouse Ridge is unusual in that it has three par 3s and three par 5s (including back to back par 5s on 17 and 18). All of the teams at the top of the scoreboard right now are playing the back 9 first.

I guess I now fall into the Oh Yee of Little Faith category. Astounding final 9 holes by Zhang and Englemann.
