Yep, against top 10 teams Canady will be our only hope moving forward this season.
Aly Kaneshiro, the catcher, is a superstar. Occasionally Canady's rise ball will go too high. A number of times Kaneshiro had to jump to catch the ball. That takes good reaction and coordination considering the speed of the ball.

Stanford with a tremendous start to the Lone Star State Invitational. Stanford has gone 4-0, with two dominant wins over perennial mid major powerhouse Louisiana, a win over Colorado State, and a signature road win at #2 Texas. Card hand the Longhorns their first loss of the year. Stanford now 9-4 with wins over Tennessee, road win at Texas, two wins over Louisiana, and a road win at San Diego State in first three weeks.

Yes, any win against the #2 team is a good win. Stanford did it with only three hits. In the top of the first Stanford scored two runs with no hits according to live stats. Kern continues to search for hits this season although she is drawing a ton of walks which is helpful.
Stanford has a chance in any game with Canady pitching and Krouse is proving to be reliable against second tier teams.
The game was televised on the Longhorn Network. I doubt there are any softball fans outside of Texas who subscribe to this network so it probably didn't have a big TV audience.

We were fortunate. Every time the stat page would post the lineups it was hard to avoid seeing the brobdingnagian disparity between our hitting and theirs. Fortunately, we have Canady and a team with a bunch of real competitors coached by another.

Stanford vs Colorado State this morning. Two out, bottom of the ninth, Jade Berry strokes a home run. Video above shows final score 3-1 but actual final score is 2-1 because there was a runner on third at the time. As soon as that runner crosses home plate game is over.
Stanford leaves Texas tournament 5-0. There are definitely more talented teams but Stanford is finding ways to win. Good coaching is helping.

Stanford is also #3 in the 1st RPI release of 2024. Stanford's signature win in RPI is over #2 Georgia. Cardinal in prime position for a top seed in the NCAA tournament if they are able to maintain their performance into Pac-12 play.

Does anyone know what's going on with Taryn Kern?
Last year at Indiana, she was the Big 10 player of the year, with a .404 average, 23 home runs, 68 RBIs, and a .942 slugging percentage (in 62 games).
This year, she has a .162 average, 0 home runs, 2 RBIs, and a .216 slugging percentage (in 17 games). She has only 6 hits this season. She does reach base a lot -- she has drawn 19 walks and 8 HBPs, so she has a very good on base percentage of .516. But production with the bat just hasn't been there. Is she injured, just in a slump, or what?

What a crazy stat line for Kern -- she has walked or been hpb 42% of the time through 17 games. That's Bonds-like. Are opponents refusing to give her anything to hit, which can certainly mess with her mind and swing?

I can understand why she bats leadoff (in a regular length softball game batting 1st vs 4th probably adds 1/3 of an at-bat per game), but I wonder if she were to bat 3rd she would be more likely to be up with runners on base and thus harder to pitch around. Batting leadoff, she starts the game with no one on and has to follow the weakest hitters in the lineup otherwise.

something tells me this will work out with time. The comment about 3rd place hitter reminds me that on my college team, our most consistent hitter was third - and she had power. And yes, she got better pitches because no one wanted to deliberately put her on base in front of our clean-up hitter.

Well, River Mahler usually follows her in the batting order and she is arguably our best hitter.
