We are in desperate need of a starting point guard with actual basketball skill. I don’t care if Van Lith regularly goes in the crowd and yells in the face of opponent’s fans and clubs a coach or two on her way down the court.

I agree.  Personality wise she would be a good fit with Brink.  I’m more concerned about her 3 point shooting.  But overall a brobdingnagian benefit if she came.

RE: WBB 2023-2024 Season - BillBradley - 04-08-2023

Agree also, but I don't think it happens. There is a financial element to getting a player of this caliber, just like Betts. I don't think she gets the financial reward for coming to Stanford. Maybe Tara has put her foot down after losing Betts and the powers that be have changed their ways, but I doubt it. On top of that, there's admissions. Has she already been accepted? Otherwise, she wouldn't put the do not contact out there. Seems like a long shot.

So here's a question. Apologies if someone else has already asked it. Would Cam hit the portal after her senior year to go pick up a year of big NIL money? She'd make more than going to the WNBA for that year. Go buddy up with a couple besties in a system where she can play on the perimeter, make a run at the title, work on a masters, and make a bunch of money doing it?

I doubt it. Why are we assuming the national brands wouldn’t go with the player to the WNBA? If you have a Nike, Adidas, Puma, Bose deal, etc., these deals will follow you to the WNBA plus your salary in the WNBA or in Turkey. You’d have to be making a lot of money via the college collective to justify it. I don’t know UConn’s or LSU’s deal. S.Carolina and Texas Tech publicly disclosed the $25,000/player minimum numbers. Cori indicated her top players (Charisma, Kiki) could receive upwards $70,000 but I imagine most players are on the low end of her scale. UCLA probably has great alumni support but when I lived in Los Angeles many moons ago, you could jump seat to seat at every USC and UCLA home game and not encounter too many fans (and they had very competitive teams then). Maybe fan engagement and $$$ potential has changed dramatically? LA is a tricky market for pro or collegiate teams other than the Lakers and USC.

Re: Tara putting her foot down after Betts departure

Seems pretty clear Tara was the problem not $$$ or Stanford or her teammates who she just vacationed with

I think your $$$ info is dated. Agree the problem wasn't Stanford or her teammates, which is what I said. I also don't think it was Tara because as expressed earlier I'm pretty sure she knew all about Tara and her system and Cam and her PT before she signed. Sure they are all factors, but there's a lot of money to be made and that's a major factor as to why these star players are transferring.

Totally agree, Nike isn't going to leave her. But the NIL collective deal is only a part of the transfer equation. The other part, that is potentially way more valuable, is the actual popularity/exposure. You just don't get much of that at Stanford. Cam has a few hundred thousand followers, playing in the sports fan echo chamber of Stanford and the Bay Area. Paige Bueckers has over a million on Instagram alone. Imagine the effect on Cam's NIL deals if she transfers to UConn. The transfer alone is worth way more than her first year WNBA salary. And this is from someone who wants, and is, a social media influencer. Plus, those followers aren't just there for a year. For an influencer, they are an ongoing river of gold. Look at Bueckers - she makes over a million a year in NIL. It was really hard for me to get my mind around it, but this stuff is real.

You could be right. My numbers on S Carolina and Texas Tech are a year old.

I will say if not to be around family in Washington (so not for more $$$), not sure why Van Lith is transferring for Nil or more marketability. She is already getting $500k+ deals right now at Louisville according to reliable sources. Louisville has:

1. Jeff Walz - a real bball savant, a player’s coach, an elite player developer at guard position even going back to Kristi Toliver when he was an assistant at Maryland

2. Louisville fanbase - one of the larger and more engaged WBB markets

3. Success - 3 Elite 8s and 1 Final Four during her time there.

Maybe Miami (an Adidas school) is paying more since her deal is with Adidas? Cavinder twins making more than Paige and they are at Miami

Totally agree, it doesn't make much sense why she would leave Louisville. She's obviously not homesick or she would have left a long time ago. I guess coming back to Washington still has it's benefits but I don't think that's where she ends up. And you're right - she has good deals in place at Louisville and she's had success there. Which is exactly why I think she (and others) have figured out there's a lot of money to be made. She's leaving for something a lot better in her mind. She's another social media influencer with around a million followers in total. I think she ends up at a big name program, and her numbers go up a lot. I think the LA schools are upping their NIL game big time so I wouldn't rule them out. L.A. is a good place for a social media influencer.

BTW, Betts currently has 17K followers on Instagram since being at Stanford. This for the #1 recruit and wanna-be social media business woman. Wonder what her audience will grow to in 3 years after leaving the Farm?

While it's conceivably a long-shot in getting Van Lith for the reasons many of you have articulated, we don't really know what's going through her decision-making and there is one possible thought I haven't heard mentioned.

Aside from visibility and money (which she has already acquired), perhaps Van Lith may actually want a legit chance to be on an NCAA championship team and she sees Brink as the elite power forward/post she's never played with at Louisville.  She may also see Brink as a kindred spirit- extremely passionate, and a fighter/winner on the court.

We don't know about her academic performance and that Tara may not want a trash-talker, but there is also the possibility that Tara can envision Brink and Van Lith leading a still very talented team back to the Finals and maybe the championship before Brink graduates and takes her skills elsewhere.

Wouldn't that be something.

I was in the LA market for a long time and I was an anomaly - a women’s basketball fan. That is the #2 market in the U.S. but not for WBB. And I doubt much has changed or will change. You hear a lot from LA residents, “There is too much to do here” for them to engage in sports beyond LA Lakers and USC football (no other sport).

NOW, USC and UCLA moving to the Big 10 next year and the rumors student athletes will receive a portion of that brobdingnagian Big 10 TV deal? That makes sense. But that hasn’t happened yet and who knows how much of that pie will go to Big 10 WBB.

Obviously my own biases and experiences are informing my conclusions here - being a WBB fan in the LA market was a lonely experience and also knowing how long lawyers will examine every angle of legality before any checks are distributed to student athletes from that Big 10 TV deal. And oh the travel even chartered travel from West Coast to Big 10? Seems like a nightmare unless your deals are signed, sealed and delivered and you aren’t just moving based on speculation and the lies coaches tell.

We do know about Van Lith’s academics.  She has a 3.84 GPA through her junior year.

Fwiw, iirc, we recruited Van Lith and were in her final choices. But she would have to be accepted to Bus school, right? Nivar transferring because 3 guards coming in? Or??

I’m hoping you are right about guard transfers because Nivar got a good amount of playing time at the end of the season and probably was a starter next year.

RE: WBB 2023-2024 Season - chimera - 04-08-2023

I find it a bit hilarious that players are getting hundreds of thousands if NIL dollars playing a sport that loses money at 99% of D1 schools.  There have been stories in the press in recent years with numbers and very few programs make money.  Most lose a lot of money.  I do wonder how the boosters who pay Van Lith feel about her leaving.  Will transfers kill the gravy train after a few years of musical chairs?

RE: WBB 2023-2024 Season - Stanfanforever - 04-08-2023

NIL $$$ has 0 to do with Betts leaving and she definitely does not consider herself a “ media savvy business woman” or whatever ridiculousness you suggested.
It’s so easy to just dismiss that she was miserable there and that’s enough .
I think it’s hilarious that you guys think you have any chance in a million years of getting Van Lith .

Family members of players on this board make it so awkward.  Just admit you are a family member or stop pretending to know anything.

The end of our WBB season, all of these transfers, and talk of Tara leaving is just making me sick to my stomach.  I was so excited about SWBB at the start of the season.  Now, I'm mentally exhausted and depressed.

Football is a dumpster fire.  MBB is a dumpster fire.  Madsen hired by Cal.  Mulkey and her 9 mercenaries win the NC.  Now Stanford WBB is falling apart.  It's too much.

RE: WBB 2023-2024 Season - Card10Fan - 04-08-2023

Winning cures a lot of things. I’m guessing if we would have made a Final 4 run this year, may be in a different spot than we are now. Is Talana next to go? The rest of her recruiting class and likely closest friends on the team are leaving. I don’t think Tara wants to leave this program in shambles when she retires so I don’t think she is done. I’m just very curious to know more of the specifies of Betts, Nivar, and Agnes which I will probably never know unless they choose to publicly discuss.

I bet Tara’s response would be something along the lines of we want kids at Stanford who want to be at Stanford but I there has to be more to this. With 3 in the portal in 24 hours time.

Yeah, I think lots of fans are feeling that way.  I keep thinking about the players.  We saw a lot of talk this past season about mental health.  Actually we saw that the past few seasons.  This season there was the thing with the t-shirts as players wanted to make clear that they were about more than basketball.  NIL and transfers might be good for the $$$$, but are they good for the players' mental health?  NIL means negotiating with adult professionals in various fields.  It means keeping up a social media presence.  It means having to consider if you are in the right place, doing the right things to maximize your brand.

There is now so much uncertainty.  What deals to take, how to build a social media brand, maybe constantly wondering if there are greener pastures somewhere out there.  More choice like being able to transfer at will also means more big decisions and more stress.  Now any little thing that isn't exactly right can cause a player to think maybe somewhere else is better.  Players now also have to worry about the portal for their team.  Will players transfer out such that suddenly a team that looked like it might be very good is now missing key players and won't be?  Will someone with more experience or who is simply a bit better transfer in and take away opportunity for playing time?  How is this good for anyone?  There is no stability.

Playing college sports is clearly very stressful and time consuming.  NIL and the portal add to that.  I have often wondered lately what exactly I am supporting.  If college sports are not fun, if the players are time crunched and stressed out, if they are often unhappy, what the heck am I watching and why should I support this?  College is supposed to be a time to find yourself, to figure out what you want to do in life, to make connections, and to have fun doing all that.  Instead we have players moving all over trying to find...something.  Are they happy?  Is playing basketball fun?  Is it enjoyable to be a professional athlete who has to keep up and image and make deals at age 18?  Is it even fun to play in games anymore with all the banging and physical play?  Sure doesn't look it to me.
