Good riddance to Colorado. Maybe I'm naive but is losing out on a few million a year going to cause the remaining Pac schools to no longer field competitive football teams? What is the mechanism for the Power 5 to cut down to 48 teams let alone for bad teams in good conferences to get kicked out? Is a few million more a year from a media rights deal going to make Northwestern a better team routinely than Oregon?
The number of high school kids good enough for D1 is not going down. The value differential in rights deals is probably as extreme as it will get; the deals the Big 10 and SEC get in subsequent negotiations are not going to be getting better than what they have now.

You have made a very good point in the value of subsequent negotiations. The media landscape and they ability to generate $$$ is anything but a given.

Please, PAC get a media deal done. The uncertainty is slowly killing the conference.

There's some decent academic institutions in the Big 12. I don't see the Big 12 as a fit for Stanford. They have indicated a desire to get to 16 teams. Colorado makes 13, Arizona would be 14. I don't see Stanford/Cal as potential conference participants. Neither does this guy, who mentions nine potential candidates, none of which are either Cal or Stanford...but the top five candidates are all Pac-12 schools.

I think there will be some sort of announcement tomorrow. Not sure what it will be.

The University of Arizona‘s Board of Regents have scheduled a meeting for Tuesday,
Quote:Scheer was also the first to report that the Pac-12 is gearing up to present a new media deal to league members, but there is “pessimism within the conference,” and it could be commissioner George Kliavkoff’s “last stand in keeping the conference together.” However, it seems as though Arizona may not be interested in hearing the commissioners final plea.

Per a “inside source”….
The deal will be a streaming contract with Apple. Also, Apple will take over the P12 Network for the amount owing to Comcast for the accounting “error” that occurred years ago. Apple will then create an add-on option to AppleTV that be an additional charge to Apple subscribers.
A few games each week would be available outside of Apple. It is unknown who would air those games (I am thinking a subcontract with ESPN for PAC after Dark games).
The total payout to each school would be in the $20 million range.
Also, three new schools would receive an invitation to join the Pac9 (SMU, Tulane, San Diego St.?)
There are other contingencies regarding annual payouts……
It sounds like a complete bust of a deal. Oregon and Washington must be fuming.
Of course, none of the above has been confirmed…….

based on "sources" on the internet the "worst possible case" today
- UA, ASU, UU go to the Big 12
- UW and UO go to the Big 10 (along with FSU and Clemson)
- the Pac 4 consists of us, Cal, OSU, and WSU, we can do a triple round robin in football!!!!
on the "upside"
- or maybe the Pac 7 if Tulane, SMU, and SDSU (or whoever) get invites (and still want to join) and the above also happens
one question I have is does the Big 12 expansion get them any more TV money or will their current deal just get split between more teams?

When they acquired Colorado, the B12 received additional funding to cover a full share for CU.
If the scenario you posted plays out, Stanford and Cal have been officially relegated to the minor leagues.

Thanks Giants. On media day Kliavkoff said "The longer we wait the better our offers get". Really? Will there be a stampede for the exits? I'll wait to hear the details. I'm hoping for a hidden silver lining somewhere in the deal.

I used to work for a firm that sold a substantial amount of services to the University of Arizona system, UofA, ASU and Northern Arizona. They made it clear that those three universities marched in lockstep as a general rule. Curious to see if UofA rides off without ASU.

so what (if anything) came from the handwringing over cal being "abandoned" by UCLA's move to the Big 10, does UCLA have to make any "make-good" payments to cal? If they do the amount of those payments appear to be rising.....
this article from Dec 2022 is pretty vague on what may (or may not) be required
Quote:As part of the board's decision, UCLA will have to increase its expected investment in student-athlete resources and might have to provide a subsidy to the University of California, Berkeley in the range of $2 million to $10 million once a Pac-12 media deal is secured, depending on the amount of the deal. A UCOP spokesperson said the frequency of the subsidy to UC Berkeley is yet to be determined.

I don't see that happening. I believe if the Big Ten takes only two more western schools, it would be Stanford and Washington. But if they are truly taking Oregon, then it will be the quartet. (UW, UO, Cal, and Stanford) It sucks for Utah (Big 12) and it sucks for OSU & WSU (??).
RE: Colorado to the Big 12 -
needle - 07-31-2023
As I understand it, until very recently few seemed to consider Washington/Oregon to the Big12 as a realistic possibility.
But if it really is $20M per school, it would be hard for any school to walk away from $10M annually (roughly the difference between the Big12 payout and the PAC payout). Would the networks reopen negotiations with the Big 12 if Washington/Oregon are in play? I really think so. But would the B1G passively allow UW and Oregon to switch conferences without making any effort to sign them up? That is what really isn’t known.
None of this is good news for Stanford.
RE: Colorado to the Big 12 -

It sure seems to me like Cal and Stanford will end up in the Big Ten.
Michael Wilson on PTI last week said the Big Ten is "making goo goo eyes at Cal and Stanford." He's about as plugged into the Big Ten and realities of this stuff as any media person given he's on the NU board of trustees.
It just makes sense for many reasons. Here are 5:
1. Academic and cultural alignment with Big Ten
2. The 6th largest media market
3. Tens of thousands of Big Ten alums in the Bay Area
4. Would be good for USCLA
5. They can be had for relatively cheap (Cal and Stanford would probably take less than a full share initially)
Of course, Wilbon also says conferences are going away eventually and there will be regions under one football league umbrella. This makes the most sense to me.
Anyway, speaking of cheap, I don't quite understand why it would make sense for whoever the Pac media partner is, to pay so little ($20M per member) as to make the schools non-competitive with schools from other conferences. Apple especially can afford to pay a little over market rate to make sure the product they carry is of high quality.
I pretty much don't trust anything being rumored on the inter webs. I'm withholding judgement until something is announced officially.

Wilner, per trojanswire, wonders aloud whether Cal (and maybe Stanford) will give up athletics.

If the Pac12 Network didn't work out, hard to see an add-on package to Apple TV making big dollars. Pac12 needed one of these streamers to splash out for more than the games are worth to try and grab market share, but there has been a lot of belt-tightening in the streaming world past couple years so seems like that sort of deal is not going to happen.
Hard to see this deal bringing stability to Pac-x.
