I do not believe this.  ESPN2 just switched to some goofball dog racing.  Picked up the game on espn3, but this is unforgivable.  And Disney wonders why they're in trouble.  High prices, low quality.
it’s on regular ESPN here…

Where? Down here in Silicon Valley it started on 2, shifted to 3.  At halftime, a notice came up that ... it was halftime.  When I got back to the video, that notice was still on-screen.  I clicked start and got about 15 seconds of the third quarter before I got ESPN's specialized spinning circle of death.  Finally started over, looks like it's back on ... ESPN.

My recording of this game will be deficient.  Anyone who happens to have the third quarter could help a lot.

Thanks,
T

There should be a replay available on ESPN3. Maybe you can redo your recording from that.

Good tip, thanks.  Will start looking right now.

Update: it's there, recording it now.  Thanks again.

RE: WBB: Stanford 96 -- Indiana 64 - OCcardinal - 11-12-2023

This was an epic win. I know Brink had a great game in our win vs Indiana 2 seasons ago, but we won by only 3 points back then and basically played them even. (We scored the exact same amount as Indiana in every quarter except the 1st.)  In the McKenzie Holmes era, Indiana's worst loss is by 17 (to a UConn team that had 3 #1 recruits and a #2 recruit and later beat us in the FF).  They just don't get blown out like this.  (Last season their worst loss was by 5 points.) I know they lost Grace Berger to the pros, but she shot 21% against us in that game 2 years ago. There will be teams that will be tougher matchups for us, but I'm very impressed.

And the best part is Geno lost today so Tara's lead in the all-time wins race increases to 7!

(11-11-2023, 06:36 PM)81alum Wrote:  Now, let's see about the parameters with taking a less experienced, smaller team against Indiana tomorrow.  I would love to see a bit of Tara's genius on display.  I would have to give odds that we will lose, but a win would go a long ways to restoring a little magic and belief around here.
Well, Tara showed she has that magic after all.  She took a team that was devastated from three unexpected transfers and an uncharacteristic early round loss, and has built a new team with excellent chemistry and fully integrated three outstanding freshmen.  It worked well enough to dominate an elite team with more height and more experience and a higher ranking.  Sustaining this and improving on it will be the next challenge.  Teams with freshmen tend to be inconsistent, but we can put the whole theory to the test in a week when we play Duke.

All in all, you cannot ask for more than this for the first truly competitive game of the season.

Having been at the game, I will watch it in ESPN replay and offer some thoughts.  But I can summarize the chalk talk.

Katy Steding was more ebullient than usual.  I was hoping for Tempie but Katy was clearly in a better mood than those she hosted last year.  Maybe her mood reflects the changed team chemistry?

She commented on that team chemistry.  Said they had put a lot of work into building team community, and the players seem to be genuinely happy for each other's successes.  Someone even asked if the team was better off without Betts, and of course Steding did not answer that.  But it is clear that this year's team--so far--is much tighter with each other than last year's team (my interpretation of her various remarks.)  For example, on many teams around the country, says Steding, freshmen who win a lot of playing time are resented by more experienced players.  Not so with this year's team.  I do have to say that I watched the bench a lot today, and "benergy" is back.  The players were cheering each other and seemed truly excited at each other's successes.

With regard to the three freshmen.  Agara is apparently a very warm, funny person off the court, but a "beast" on the court.  Steding said what I've been saying (now I feel smart!) that she has a superb ability to take it through traffic and get and-ones.  She has excellent hang-time, and we actually saw her do that in this game.  Steding compared her to Fran Belibi but an inch taller, and like Fran, Agara can dunk.

Ogden is a superb shooter--though she was uncharacteristically "off" tonight.  But Steding said she was an "outside-in" guard meaning she could shoot from outside but put it on the floor and drive.  Steding said she was impressed with her defense--it needs to come up to the college pace, but Steding really praised her defense.

Clardy will be a terrific point guard at some point in the future.  She shoots well and on defense she deflects.  I think Steding said she was a lefty?  Or was that Agara?  Someone who was there help me....

Steding talked about the Indiana offense going through Holmes and passing back out to open shooters.  We saw that today, and Indiana did get a sprinkling of open three point attempts.  Holmes was defensive player-of-the-year in the Big 10 last year, but her defense did not seem able to stop Iriafen or Brink.

A question was asked about Iriafen's progression.  Steding said the new coaches Erica McCall and Tempie (returning) had worked with her especially on her footwork, so she could avoid travels.  Tonight she showed off that improvement, although she traveled once which probably should have been a jump ball instead.  In any case, whether Iriafen's own efforts or the better coaching or both--I think she is becoming a true star.

Steding also noted that Stanford was not able to use the portal very much.  I can't remember her specific words, but she made it clear that we rarely are going to be able to bring people in from the portal as other teams do.  This means that developing freshmen remains the key to our continued success--my note.  It looks pretty good this year with three capable freshmen who are already contributing.

That is what I can remember about the chalk talk...others might remember points I missed.  More on the game later once I re-watch it.

Your perception was spot on. According to the analytics Holmes had only 1 stop, her stop % was a miniscule 8% and she had a defensive rating of 120.8 (lower being better).

Compare that to Brink: 12 stops, stop % of 115.8% and a defensive rating of 59.3!  Iriafen had an impressive defensive stats too: 8 stops, stop % of 108.1% and defensive rating of 63.9.

RE: WBB: Stanford 96 -- Indiana 64 - 81alum - 11-12-2023

I am half way through the ESPN replay and the announcers do give some interesting information.  Tara is using the Triangle offense.  This was her staple in some of the good years to feed Appel and then Nneka and then Chiney, but she left it for a variety of other offenses including the Princeton and the Flow.  Not sure if it is all triangle all the time, or if just elements of the triangle are mixed in, but it makes a great deal of sense when you have a dominant post like Brink.  As the announcer was explaining it during the broadcast, it involves the "pinch" at the elbow, and I presume it involves high-low action from Iriafen to Brink or vice-versa.

If you are knowledgeable about the triangle please chime in. When we were running the Triangle before, I was a neophyte at watching basketball, so I will attempt to educate myself on it and offer some insight as we see the new offense shaping up.

re Clardy, roster and announcers say 5'9". looks few inches taller than that

RE: WBB: Stanford 96 -- Indiana 64 - 81alum - 11-12-2023

As per the ESPN announcers, the Indiana coach was concerned about the Stanford offense going 1-2-5 or 1-3-5.  Basically passing from the point guard to the shooting guard (Jump) or the wing (Bosgana among the starters and sometime Ogden and Demetre) who in turn feed the ball down low to Brink, or to Iriafen when Brink is out.  (Jump had 3 assists, Bosgana 2, Demetre 1.)  We will know if the triangle is working when the 2 and 3 start piling up assists.  This is the triangle, centered around feeding the ball to a dominant 5 close to the basket where the percentages of a made basket are very high.  It worked today.  Now, however, every future opponent knows what we are doing and will prep for it.   There were games where Connecticut and others shut down our triangle and embarrassed us.  So the key is to perfect it and sustain it.

For an assist of pure beauty, and illustrating Jump's transition to a guard with multiple ways to score, take a look at the ESPN replay at 3rd quarter with 3:39 left, or 55:58 into the broadcast.  I know that Lepolo is too much of a "pure point guard" for some people's tastes, although nailing 2 three pointers today was a good thing.  But sometimes pure point guards really, really enable the offense of others, and this was a pretty one.

Someone noted the makeup smudged on Brink's jersey.  You can see it at 57.9 left in the 3rd.  Or 59:55 into the ESPN replay.  Am I crazy, or is it insane that women are wearing makeup to play sports?  Just a feature of image-mongering in the era of NIL?

I don't remember exactly what Steding said there. I know Agara is a lefty. I think Clardy is right handed.

Tara made a point of Agara being left handed when announcing the class, but didn't mention whether the other two freshmen are.

RE: WBB: Stanford 96 -- Indiana 64 - 81alum - 11-12-2023

A really good highlight of Chloe Clardy taking it left to the rim is at 4:31 in the 4th, 1:14:25 in the broadcast.  She does shoot this shot left-handed, but that does not make her a lefty.

RE: WBB: Stanford 96 -- Indiana 64 - CompSci87 - 11-12-2023

Another fun quote from the press conference.

Reporter: We don't know anything when we make the rankings.

Tara, deadpan: That's right, you don't.

Yes. It's really important to finish around the rim well with either hand. It's good to see Clardy's nice lefty finish on that play.

RE: WBB: Stanford 96 -- Indiana 64 - 81alum - 11-12-2023

Post game analysis

Overview:

Reading the thread above will tell you most of what you need to know.  In a normal year, this game would have been important but not crucial.  Given the way last year ended--with losses to UCLA, Utah, and even transfer laden Ole Miss--followed by the transfer out of 3 players and the graduation of another #1 recruit--I have never seen or felt such despair about Stanford WBB.  And so blowing out a team that was another #1 seed last year, and doing so emphatically, with joy, and with the marked improvement of returning players and the surprising aid of freshmen--this was as Tara said a "statement game" and gives us cause to hope that this season could be much more joyous than last season.

Performances:

Brink showed that she has indeed worked on her 3 point shot, which makes her even more difficult to defend, sinking 2/3.  She was only 4/8 ("only" = 50%) from in close, but she bore the brunt of the Indiana defense.  And she made up for it with a perfect 6/6 free throw shooting.  On defense, she added 4 blocks and kept her fouls down to 2--at least one of which was an offensive foul on a moving screen.  She did have 5 turnovers, which seems to happen a lot to posts who get doubled.  20 points and 17 rebounds.

Iriafen is, in the words of Brink, the most improved player in the country.  20 points and 11 rebounds is nothing to sneer at.  Those are Chiney numbers, exceeded only by her teammate Brink.  Most impressive, she was 9/12 around the rim--better than Brink, and made some sweet mid range jumpers when the path to the rim was blocked.  The downside was 4 personal fouls that limited her to 20 minutes.  But consider 20 points and 11 rebounds in 20 minutes, and double that if she can stay in the game.  Zounds!

Jump deserves mention.  She was blanketed on the perimeter for the most part, being the obvious focus of attention of the opposing perimeter defense.  Still she was 2/4, but more important were her drives to the basket, where she was 3/4 on layups and floaters.  She has diversified her offense over prior years.  A mark of Tara's confidence in her defense and her conditioning is that she led the team with 33 minutes played.

Bosgana and Agara were the other 2 double digit scorers, Bosgana more in the first half and Agara more in the 2nd.  Bosgana has come a long way from her freshman year and now she mixes up treys, drives, and assists in equal measure.  Agara demonstrated the ability to score in traffic, but today she did something I have not seen in the prior games and scrimmages:  she was 1/2 from three point range.  Agara could, if she continues to improve, become a Kelsey Plum type player--though taller (in the sense of scoring at three levels and welcoming contact.)  On the other hand, she was badly beaten on defense a time or two, as you might expect a freshman to be.

Demetre and Ogden both shot poorly tonight.  This is a second poor shooting game for Demetre and the first for Ogden.  But they are both in general highly accurate, excellent shooters, and I expect they will leave their slumps behind and start contributing on offense.  Not everyone gets hot at the same time.  But let's keep an eye on them.

Lepolo, Clardy, and Harriel were our shorter, speedy, ball handling point guards.  I had great worries that any of them could score much against a team which featured guards about 3"-7" taller than any of them.  But they acquitted themselves well.  I suppose we could get into a "point guard controversy" between Lepolo and Clardy in time.  Lepolo had 4 assists, only 1 turnover, and made 6 points on 2/3 three point shooting.  Clardy (in half the minutes) had 1 assist, 1 turnover, and 7 points.  Lepolo faces the same issue as always: becoming more aggressive with her own shot.  Clardy certainly has the aggression, but needs to understand the offense better to initiate more assists.  I suspect the two will be in friendly competition, and how wonderful to have two competent point guards to push each other to improve.  Harriel, on the other hand, had a welcome 6 points but had no assists.

Conclusion:

Wow, what a difference a game makes.  The entire season feels different now.  We may well have some set backs, and UCLA, Colorado, Utah, and other Pac-deserter teams may give us a hard time.  But today's game was an absolute joy to watch--and I don't remember any other games that were so joyous for both players and fans since the wheels fell off January 15 last year at USC.

Going forward, I think the acid test will be whether our freshmen become more competent defenders.  We also need to keep an eye on Demetre and freshman Ogden to see if their shooting returns to their norms.  Finally, how easily will our opponents adapt to Tara's resuscitation of the old triangle offense?  Will that offense continue to be as effective as it was against Indiana, or will other teams scheme to shut it down?  Remember, the "Flow" offense worked very well until Cal showed its weakness last year in its narrow 56-60 loss to us, and our offense was never the same again.  The mark of a truly excellent team is that it can successfully execute its offense even when the defense knows what it coming.  Is that team Stanford 2023-24?

RE: WBB: Stanford 96 -- Indiana 64 - amytmueller - 11-12-2023

What an impressive showing today, what a fun game to watch!  If both Cam and Kiki can double double, we're in good shape.

Chalk talk: Katy said Nunu was a lefty, but actually preferred to attack from the right. And, as others have said, she can dunk.  I missed the pre-game warmups, but heard a roar, did someone do the Belibi dunk?  Another very impressive game from the freshman.

Agree with everyone's assessment of the game. But I want to mention one thing.  Hannah didn't have a great stats night, though she played a lot of minutes and took good care of the ball.  And, she's now attacking the basket with a layup or pull-up jumper.  But the important thing is that she always brings a defensive player way out to guard her on the perimeter, which opens up the floor under the basket.

The fact that we shot so many 3's tonight, will force defenses to play us tighter, which will open things up for our forwards down low.  It's a cat and mouse game, and from what we saw tonight, I think we can adapt to the defense and score either outside or inside, depending on what the defense gives us.

Ack!  Thank you for the correction.  I guess Steding's statement got on my brain and I was looking for something that did not happen.
