…I'm a little less sanguine about Brink shooting the three ball than some of you…
I’m not sanguine about it at all
Cam jacking up the missed threes was our worst offensive possessions of the game
They seemed often early in our set, the rest of the team seemed to mostly stand around and watch her, I’m not sure we ever got an O Board on any of them
There’s so much more Cam can and should do if she gets the pass outside the arc
She almost always has another big on her that she is quick enough to start a drive on
She can then complete the drive, feed inside to Iriafen et al if open, dish back out beyond arc to wide open Lepolo or other, if she’s dragged the D to sag into the paint
The worst choice of all is throw up a lazy 3 that if is not going in will almost surely be rebounded by other team
Agree it's not a good outcome if they don't go in, but I'm betting they will. I'd even go so far as to say we have to have them if we are going to make a natty run. We've already seen how our inside game can be taken away from us. We get too predictable and it's going to happen again.
Sure, Cam can get 20-25 with her inside game and FT's, but it takes away from what Kiki can do. Cam playing some (not all, just some) on the perimeter is another threat that they have to guard and it opens things up for Kiki. Cam and Kiki together getting 40+ is our ticket. I don't think that happens against top teams with both of them in the lane all game.
I understand the desire to mix up Cams offense positions
So not always predictably hanging out deep near basket
And to try draw draw their big outta the zone
But there’s two fundamental big risks in her hanging out outside the arc & then taking a three:
For one she’s statistically one of worst on team for hitting threes. If you were in last seconds of a game and down by two she’s one of the least you’d want taking a three
So far this season of course. Could yet turn it around
Second: with her taking a three, by definition she’s removed herself as our best rebounder from having a chance at the OBoard. Is like boxing herself out.
I think fair to say that most D’s we face would be thrilled to see us bring it down and just let Cam throw up a three. They’d take those odds over and over.

I don’t know if she’s all that bad. WSU was a bad outside shooting game for her and brought her stats down, but before that she was shooting .364, 4th on the team. After today’s game she’s 10/29 for .345—not amazing, but not terrible either.

Yes, conclusions being made from a very small sample size (only 24 attempts). Look at it this way...Cam is now 9 for 24 this season. Pretty solid %. If only 1 of her misses went in, she would be 10/24, which is 41.6%. She's also taken a couple desperation/end of shot clock threes in that mix.
I'm going with my gut here, and not relying completely on this small sample size. Put simply, Cam is a great shooter. She has great mechanics in her shot. She understands balance. Her feet are always set. The ball rotates correctly with a good arc. Her release point is the same. She has great touch. She has proven that at 19 feet, with her feet set, unguarded, she can make over 90%. I believe she will be a 40%+ shooter on open threes (at 22ft). I bet Tara and the team know this because she probably proves it over and over again at practice. She also delivers at crunch time. Proof is in the pudding, but I think (hope) we could get to a point where Cam is exactly who we want taking a 3 at the end of the game.

All good points. Also I think I've heard that free throw percentage is a good predictor of 3-point percentage. That might have been about future 3-point percentage after further work and development, though.

Per the Athletic, Brink had eye surgery over the off season, so no more contacts to fall out, and the article says her corrected vision is helping her shooting.

Now that you mention it, it's been a long time since I've seen her do that thing where she pokes around her eye, adjusts her contact, then blinks a bunch between plays. I'd totally forgotten how often she had to do that in the past.
I still think net/net, she should not take a lot of these long range shots, because it's basically a guaranteed rebound for the defense if she misses. That's a big contrast to Jump et al, where we have a good odds for a second chance. But taking enough to keep her a credible outside threat from the key works for me.

Cam should only shoot 3s when Kiki and Brooke are on the floor.
