RE: WBB: Stanford 65 Oregon State 56 - 81alum - 01-21-2024

1) I will save my Tara comments for the other thread.  But the terrific atmosphere at this sold-out game should be noted.  This kind of attendance and crowd are deserved for every game.  And I think that kind of crowd and enthusiasm makes a difference.

2) Iriafen--wow.  36 points.  Trying to remember the 30 point games I have seen in Stanford WBB recently.  The question is whether she has the talent to have this kind of performance every game, or whether this was a very special "in-the-zone" moment for her.  It is now very clear that necessity is the mother of invention--that the removal of the restricted area from WBB, combined with the way the game is officiated, means that players like Brink and Iriafen have to be able to make mid range jumpers as a part of their toolset.  Earlier this year Iriafen mentioned at a presser that she was working on her three point shot, and in practice I saw her make several go down.  So it is not a shock that she has added this.  Consistency has yet to be proven.  But for now, at 2/4 three point attempts this season, she leads the team at 50%!

3) Another outstanding game from Lepolo.  Without her we lose both the games this weekend.  I say that not only because her offense is heating up, her assists are excellent, few turnovers--but her defense against the opposing teams' best players.  TVO had 8 points and didn't make a three.

4) I am worried about Jump.  I wonder if all her hard work on defense has somehow distracted her or sapped her energy.  0/6 from three, and it seemed that some of those she was pressing.  Yes, she has a really quick release, but she did not have to be that quick on a few of the attempts.  Would her accuracy improve if she got set just a bit better?  She is down to 33% for the season, by far her worst year, and is behind several other Stanford players.  Harriel and Lepolo, even Brink and Agara, are shooting for a higher percentage and a few of them have quite a few attempts.

5) I thought Demetre played quite well.  I really like her side-step three point shot, a shot Jump has yet to make consistently.  Jump is best with catch-and-shoot, Demetre seems to do well after side-stepping and shooting.

6) Except for Iriafen's exceptional performance, this seemed like a lot of other grind-it-out Stanford/OSU games.  Both Tara and Rueck scheme to take away their opponent's strengths, and our games together tend to be low scoring.

7) I really, really liked Harriel's play today.  She deserved to have a good day.  Her shooting was not "on" for a change, but she had 3 steals and 0 turnovers.  Eliminating those turnovers was on the top of my mind for what she had to do to earn more serious minutes, and I think she is on her way.  Her defense is looking very strong.

8) Not sure how much the TV audience caught of the various post-game remarks, but Tara notes that all the OSU players and coaches congratulated her in the receiving line at the end.  Rueck and his players showed class today.

RE: WBB: Stanford 65 Oregon State 56 - qwerty49 - 01-21-2024

Just a great, gritty win. Obviously  we were out of sorts in Q1 trying to figure out a Cam-less offense.

Of course both Kiki and Lepolo had superb games but Harriel was the  pleasant surprise for me.  As long as Lepolo remains aggressive on offense I wonder if Harriel might be a good option to replace Bosgana in the starting lineup.  Elena is just too wild from beyond the arc, and Harriel also has those quick hands on D.

Great shots of so many former players on the sidelines today - brought back some fond memories!

Nice touch to have Ros, Jen and Chiney post-game. I was actually surprised Pac-12 TV showed as much as they did, without cutting away to a rerun of tiddlywinks from 2003.

Confirmed that Brink is OUT today
Ouch.

Well, it will be interesting to see how we do against a decent team without her.
Of course, it would be nice if we still had Betts.
I disagree! We are a *better* team without Betts. No more “poor me” or *I want to be the star* attitude!
This year's team is better than last year’s. Why? Because they play as a unit, they are committed, they don’t grumble in the wings thus taking the whole team down with them! Sometimes a 6’7” player can be a detriment, and last year was one of those years. There appeared to be dissension on the team. Between the defectors and the graduated, that problem disappeared. We are so much better this year for it!

So agree. A better team for sure
No more drama jealousy whatever.
Thankfully the off season worked out just fine.

Totally agree. This team seems to be happy playing with one another, happy at each other's success. That was not the vibe last year.

Here's the SF Chron's write-up on the game, as much about Tara and 1203 as about the game, but also worthwhile game comment.

My sources say that Cameron is suffering from compartment syndrome of the knee.

For the non medical types among us, what is that, and how serious?

The pure joy from this team strongly emanates from the court.

That's more of a chronic condition, so I doubt that.

Ann Killion from the Chronicle reported that Cam could have played but they didn’t want to push it and risk further injury. Compartment syndrome wouldn’t have even allowed her to be in position to play today right?

RE: WBB: Stanford 65 Oregon State 56 - 81alum - 01-21-2024

I've been looking through past records to find the last time a Stanford player had 30 points in a game.

No 30 point games in 22-23, 21-22, 20-21, 19-20, or so far before today in 23-24.

As 2006 corrected (see below) Lexie Hull had 36 against Kansas in 21-22.

The last one was Alana Smith, in 18-19, against WSU.  She had 34.  She had another 30 point game, and Dijonai Carrington had a 33 and a 30 point game that season.  Kiana Williams had 27 once which is the closest anyone has come since then.

In 17-18 Smith had 33 against Ohio State--in a loss.  Also in 17-18 McPhee had her amazing 33 point game at Oregon, almost all in the second half.  She was in the zone, literally.

None in 16-17

In 15-16, Lili Thompson had 30 against WSU.

In 14-15, Bonnie Samuelson had 30 against Davis

In 13-14, Chiney had 11 30 point games, the highest one being 37 against WSU.

So Iriafen's 36 point game today is the highest point total by a single player since Chiney did it 11 years ago.

That said, the 36 points are not enough to get this performance on a Stanford top 10 list.  10th place on the list of single game scoring is owned by Nneka with 38 against Oklahoma.  First place is Jayne Appel with 46 against Iowa State.

RE: WBB: Stanford 65 Oregon State 56 - 2006alum - 01-21-2024

Thanks for the recap 81! I was pretty sure I recalled watching Lexie drain shots from all over the court against Kansas in the second round of our Final Four run in 2022, and sure enough, she also scored 36. So maybe our records don't make it easy to check for post-season games?

Nope, you are correct, 2006.  My poor eyesight missed that when reviewing the game-high records.  My guess is that I may have missed another somewhere.  I've been looking at these season lists and scanning for the game high scores:

https://stanford_ftp.sidearmsports.com/custompages/wbb/stats/2021-22/teamcume.htm

Yes, now that you remind me, I remember Lexie's performance well.

Here is an interesting question.  Will Kiki become more like Chiney, who had 11 of those kind of performances in one year, or more like Lexie, who occasionally "went off" but averaged 11 pts.  If Brink does graduate and leave, and Iriafen is the featured player, she might have Chiney like stats.  I do remember at the time, though, that the season was not as successful as we wanted it to be, and the reason was that the team became too uni-dimensional.  Tara complained that we did not want to be Chiney and the Chinettes.

Correction to 2023-24 -- Kiki had 30 points against Florida State on 11/23

Not the First 30 points game this season. kiki had 30 on 11/23  vs Florida State

No such thing as a compartment syndrome of the knee. And a true compartment syndrome, for example of the muscle compartments of the lower leg, is an emergency that requires immediate surgery to release the pressure. Perhaps your sources misspoke or misunderstood.

Trent Edwards was hospitalized for 10 days, including 5 days in the ICU, for compartment syndrome.

RE: WBB: Stanford 65 Oregon State 56 - 81alum - 01-22-2024

OK, with a nights sleep, I have gone over the records again and this list might be more accurate, with the help of the corrections provided above.   See if a few of these bring back some memories!

30 point games since Chiney Ogwumike graduated following the 2013-2014 season:

Iriafen  36 Oregon State 1/21/24
Iriafen 30 Florida State 11/23/23
Lexie Hull 36 Kansas 3/20/22
Lexie Hull 33 Oregon 1/2/22
Smith 34 WSU 1/28/19
Carrington 30 UCLA 1/6/19
Smith 30 Buffalo 12/21/18
Smith 30 Hawaii 11/25/18
McPhee 33 Oregon 2/4/18
Smith 33 Ohio State 11/25/17
Thompson 30 WSU 1/31/16
Bonnie Samuelson 30 Davis 11/22/14

We are averaging a little more than one such game a year.  Tara is probably happier though with fewer rather than more of these performances, provided the points get distributed across more players.  To have such an outpouring usually means more than that a particular player got "hot," but that either her teammates were not keeping up or the opposition was lopsided in the way they could defend.  For example, Smith's outpouring against Ohio State still resulted in a loss, and Iriafen's last night could have as well if Demetre and Lepolo had not also contributed some points.

36 puts Iriafen and Lexie up there as the two highest performances since the Chiney Ogwumike era, but it would take 38 points to crack the top 10 list, and 47 points to pass Appel, Wiggins, Starbird, Hoff, and Nneka (who are on that list, most more than once) as the greatest Stanford performance ever.   Great players like Azzi, Powell, Whiting etc. are not on that list--probably because they played for more balanced teams.

Press conference:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8sRwDGOEvI

Key points:  Tara really reflects on her joy for the game, and it certainly does not sound like she is anywhere close to retirement.

Referring to her players:  "I'm so jealous, because I never got to do what they get to do.  It's a little girl's dream playing out through them.  I never got to do it but I get to watch it, and I have the best seat in the house."

She was asked when Brink would be back.  "I have no idea.  I think she was kinda close today.  Obviously we want her every single game, but we need her to be healthy."

Tara said the atmosphere at Maples today was in the top 5 of her career, up there with UConn and early career games against Arkansas and Washington.
