Princeton is out, losing in the semi of the Ivy tournament (no, I didn't watch).
Is the Princeton head coach Muir's No. 1 target? If so, I'd imagine we'll have some news soon.
I'd much rather wait for a shot at Kyle Smith or even the Colgate guy, fwiw.

Per the suggestion on the other thread, I don't think Randy Bennett is the guy. Coaches who have been at the same place forever are stereotyped into a certain style of play. He's perfect for St Mary's, but we won't be able to compete in the ACC with the players he would get.
My money is on James Jones or Jarron Collins.

I love Collins, seems like a good guy, but I wonder if he has enuf fire to bring us back. However, unless another great name is out there I wouldn't mind finding out.

Tom Davis recruited the class that put Stanford in the NCAA tournament for the first time in 47 years - Todd Lichti, Howard Wright, Bryan McSweeney, Terry Taylor, Scott Meinert.
Montgomery struggled recruiting wise until landing Adam Keefe in his 3rd class. Other players in his early classes (guys like Andy Poppink, Peter Dukes, Marcus Lollie) were not better than the guys who came before. Everything changed for Montgomery (and Stanford) when Brevin Knight arrived in Montgomery's 8th season.
Montgomery's strength for the 1st half of his Stanford career was making a competitive team out of mostly 3 star guys. But it's really tough to find someone with that skill set who can work within Stanford's extremely strict admissions standards.

I don't get this - stanford has shown no trouble in landing absolutely elite recruits these past years under haase. A coach that can actually develop top talent and maintain the status quo on recruiting would be sufficient.

Now days it seems the top talent is not willing to wait around until year 3 to see if they make it to the dance. None of our big recruits have stuck around more than two years. Makes it tough on a new coach. If we ease up the transfer requirements and hire a really good recruiter it is probably possible for a great coach to turn things around in one year, but I am not holding my breath as I wait for those two things to happen. Basketball has become a one year event.

I would support a Jarron Collins hire but it's worth noting that this career path has not produced great results in recent years. Patrick Ewing, Juwan Howard and Jerry Stackhouse were all highly accomplished NBA players who became NBA assistant coaches before falling flat as college head coaches (at their alma maters in the first two cases). Ironically, Penny Hardaway is the most successful of this bunch and he skipped coaching in the NBA altogether, going straight from coaching high school to leading his alma mater at Memphis.

We hired Haase basically based on a single good season, and I think we'd be doing the same with Smith.
And it's not just one good season from Smith--it's more like one good player. It's safe to say that if Isaac Jones hadn't transferred to WSU, WSU isn't in the Tourney, and Smith isn't a candidate for the MBB job, right? Maybe we shouldn't be hiring people who were one transfer player away from not being a candidate?
On the other hand, Smith might be the best we can get. Bleh.

I like Kyle Smith but I would want to know more about his continual roster attrition. He won't be able to replace players in the same manner at Stanford.
In reviewing his record, I like the three straight seasons with a winning conference record in the Pac-12. Haase achieved this only once in 8 seasons so Smith would be an upgrade. Just not clear as to how much of one.
Also a small qualitative point - when Smith was at USF he attended the Olympic Club's college bb tip-off event along with all the other Bay Area coaches. Smith, in my estimation, was the most impressive guy there, better than Randy Bennett, Jerod Haase and other 5-6 guys there.

I want a coach who can actually coach. Do you think the talent on WSU's roster this year is better than Stanford's talent this year? I don't. Yet WSU is in into the round of 32. I don't care if the next coach is Smith - just get somebody who knows what to do with the players available.
