WVB lost to China 3-2. Almost pulled off the reverse sweep. Were behind 0-2 when Kathryn Plummer was inserted into the line up. They then proceeded to win the next two sets and almost pulled out the fifth set.

Sweet story about Sophia Smith (and Michael Wilson) that came across my news feed: https://www.townandcountrymag.com/leisure/sporting/a61691092/who-is-michael-wilson-sophia-smith/

She now trains with the ASU coaches and attends classes at ASU (although she is ineligible as a pro to compete collegiately). Smith is the top qualifier in the 100m backstroke for tomorrow's finals.

If she tries to transfer back to Stanford and they let her, we're all writing very strongly worded letters to somebody. I think. Honestly, I'm confused on all this.

I take the inclusive view of Stanford affiliates so I'm including her in my list (other's lists my vary), and the AD has her on their list (so I agree with the AD for once).  And I doubt she's going to be looking to transfer back, but if she does I will NOT be writing a strongly worded letter to anyone

Great about Smith. That’s my feeling

The Athletic published an article about Regan in December 2023 that included tidbits about her experience at Stanford.

From what we hear, it doesn't sound like many students had a great time on the Farm during covid.

The "response time"  is between when one swimmer touches the wall and the next leaves the blocks. Desirable is between 0.1 and 0.2 seconds. Huske's was 0.00!! If she had left the blocks any earlier, the team would have been disqualified! That was a close one.

Actually, a reaction time at these Olympics of -0.03 in a swimming relay is legal, but -0.04 is a disqualification.
Basically, this is a measure of the error tolerance of the equipment.
For the explanation, see this SwimSwam article from the previous Olympics.  Note: The timing system at the Paris Olympics swim venue is Omega.

For an NCAA rational of how a -0.07 reaction time in a relay was allowed, see this SwimSwam article.

For a (undergraduate?) report on a comparison of relay and flat start times (2015), see here.  (At first glance, I disagree with the premise that the relay time is a "reaction" time: Relay starts are not really reaction times but are what the diver feels is comfortably close, but safe, depending upon the risk/reward ratio. But the paper concludes the average relay start is about 0.4 faster than the average flat (ie, non-relay) start (Hmm.. the paper says 0.39, but flat start average - relay start average = 0.71 - 0.26 = 0.45  ??.))

For an article on the 0.10 reaction time for track athletes, see here.

I wish I knew more about the errors in the swim sensors (touch pad & starting block).  I have long felt that the touch pads have an error of this magnitude and that some races have been decided by a differential in recorded times (of 0.01 or 0.02) that seemed contrary to camera views of first contact with the pad.  Note that 0.03 is about the time between one frame and the next at a traditional 30 Hz video, but most video is faster now.  There should be high speed cameras overhead at the big FINA events (in case of electronic timing failures).

thanks for the correction!!

Team USA has won 20 medals so far in these games but only 3 gold.  Impressed with France.  They have 5 gold and 17 total medals in 8 different sports.  Japan is also doing great with 7 gold.

Regan Smith gets the silver in the 100m backstroke

RE: Stanford at the 2024 Paris Olympics (now with results) - qwerty49 - 07-30-2024

Coco Gauff gets a really bad call. Opponent’s service return was called out just as Coco was starting her swing. So Coco eases up and hits it into the net. Original out call is overruled and instead of playing a let they give the point — and a service break — to the opponent.  Coco in tears and quickly loses the match.

Yes, you can’t take things for granted but that call really stank.

I mean, was there any doubt?  She did it in Olympic record time.

Word stank applies to WBB 3x3 without Cam. Burdick not imoressive and Rhyne Howard must be sick or injured as she was a non-presence. I thought she was injured after Cam but stayed on the team and her shots were way way off.

Well, there has only be one other Olympic record in the 1500M. Her's from 2021. . . .

Still amazing that she's a bit faster now than three years ago and still 10 seconds ahead of the silver medalist. She once again has claimed the top 20 times in the event ever. . . .

I was really surprised to "remember" that she's only 27. She went to her first Olympics at 15! If anyone can win again at 31, it's Katie. Heck, 30 year old Sarah Sjöström just won gold in the 100M Free. Sarah's post swim interview was a hoot. She was stunned: "20 year olds are supposed to win the 100 Free, not 30 year olds. . . ." or something like that. Fun stuff. . . .

Just finished watching the loss to Azerbaijan and yeah, it wasn’t good. At all. Cam’s mobility becomes very special in 3v3. They are definitely missing her.
