When Stanford went through a whole bunch of injuries after Shannon Turley left, I think I remember there were lots of discussions about strength training and injuries. Any thoughts about the last couple of years for the 49ers? They seem really snakebit the last two seasons.

I have zero data, but I would guess that injuries in the NFL is an equal-opportunity thing, team-by-team. Protecting your assets strikes me as a pretty high priority practice given the money at stake.

Niners were a 1.5 'dog to the Rams, then Purdy was ruled out, and it went to 8.5 point underdogs. Solid effort all around, special teams, defense, offense. Timely turnover (ball strip on the 1 yard line, preventing a Ram TD), Mac Jones threw for 349 yards, Rams defense had no answer for Kendrick Bourne, and former Cardinal Christian McCaffrey ran for 57 yards and caught 8 passes for 82 yards and a TD.
I don't think there's a quarterback controversy, but Jones threw 49 times, no interceptions. He's 3-0.
And Eddy Pineiro made a 59 yard field goal.
The stadium looked like Levi's south with the amount of red in it. Estimates were 61% to 62% 49er fans.
Interesting comparison between QBR and passer rating. The Rams' Stafford had a better passer rating than Jones (111.0 to 100.9) but a worse QBR (54.7 to 69.9). Jones' passer rating is 10th in the league (65.3) but last night's performance would place him at 7th. Last year's 49er backup, Sam Darnold, is 9th. Shanahan knows how to pick and coach QBs.
Not so much the OLs. That team needs to invest in OLs. Trent Williams is a former All-Pro and now looks every one of his 122 years old. Brendel should have been retired. Decent pass blocking, nonexistent run blocking, though the Rams have a terrific run defense (4th best in NFL ypc).

Agree biggly re investment in OL The rookie, Colby, looks like a keeper, and Williams was better last night. Puni is "ok," but I don't know why McKissick was reupped. Brendel is smart, but he's way overwhelmed by size.

Earlier this year, the NFL agreed to incorporate the All-America Football Conference statistics into their overall statistics.
Records that will change:
Most yards rushing by a team in a season will go from the 2019 Ravens (3,296 yards in 16 games) to the 1948 49ers who gained 3,663 yards in 14 games. The 1948 Niners will also have the most yards per carry over a season (6.07, versus the Ravens 5.76 in 2024). Johnny Strzykalski led the 49ers with 915 yards, Joe the Jet Perry at 562, Stanford Alums Frankie Albert (349) and Norm Standlee (fullback, 261 yards on 52 carries). The team also had Stanford alums Bruno Banducci at guard and Jim Cox at linebacker
49ers' AAFC record was 38-14-2, so their NFL record is now 634-528-16, seventh most wins, and most of all NFL teams that weren't part of the original NFL. The Browns are now 563-553-14.
List of all the Pro Football Franchises | Pro-Football-Reference.com
Incidentally, only four teams from the original NFL in the 1920s remain; the Bears, Packers, Cardinals and Giants (Lions were founded in 1930).
Forty NFL franchises founded in the 1920s folded, including five from New York alone.

Brock Purdy had a great game against Indianapolis. He's play just six games this year. He and Mac Jones are rated back-to-back on NFL passer rating, #13 and #12 respectively (97.4 and 96.0).
For QBR, Mac Jones is ranked #8 in the NFL at 69.4. Purdy doesn't have enough passes to qualify (but somehow has enough to qualify for passer rating), but if he
did have enough passes to qualify for QBR, he would be #2 in the NFL at 72.9. And that's with a Swiss cheese OL, no Brandon Aiyuk, no Deebo Samuel, a banged-up Pearsall and Kittle missing five games.

BTW, McCaffrey is #6 in the NFL in most receptions (86), Schultz is #14 (70), Wilson is #18 (66), and Ertz is #49 (50).

My understanding is that QBR is supposed to account for that, isolating QB play from the other players. So, if you scramble for 2 yards when the pocket collapses because an OL missed a block, that is considered a very positive play for QBR. OTOH, if you throw a completion into a wide open receiver, but underthrew the receiver to allow the DB to recover, that is a negative for QBR.

Right, that's my understanding as well, that QBR is a more accurate QB measuring tool because of that explanation. So Brock at #2 in the NFL makes some sense over Jones, and I don't think the 49ers trade Jones, I think they keep him for the full two years of his contract, not even if the offer is a 2nd and 5th round pick, despite the fact that the 49ers desperately need DLs and LBs and a WR. And some OLs. They'll have seven selections in the first four rounds, so I don't see them trading Jones for anything other than a haul of picks.

Last year the Seahawks didn't play in the wild card round . . . . because they missed the playoffs on a strength of victory tiebreaker.
This year the Seahawks won't play in the wild card round . . . . because they will have the 1 seed and a bye. Coach Michael Macdonald has grown.

Too many years ignoring the offensive line.
Two short week games in a row at the end of the season = not good.

Eagles OL > 49er DL
Eagles DL > 49er OL
First playoff game will be played in Philadelphia, home game for the Eagles
Eagles rested most of their starters in today's lost to the Washington Commanders
Add it all up, likely first round exit for the 49ers. Early line is Eagles by 3.5.
